Fielding Frustrations

Okay, I've played this game long enough to know this happens, but it continues to flummox me.

I start with a team I draft for the 1961 season. Let's just call them the Angels. One of the guys I pick up is Dick (Richie) Allen. Allen plays his way up my minor league system and breaks the big time in Left Field. In 1963, he becomes my very best player, anchoring LF and the cleanup spot in my lineup. I gradually fill other positions with players of at least passable quality.

All of a sudden, after the '63 season, Allen wakes up one morning and TOTALLY FORGETS HOW TO PLAY LF. He is now ONLY a 3rd sacker.

Okay, I know, historically, Allen moved to 3b. However, I kindda want my somewhat unrealistic historical replay to follow some kind of organic logic. While I want Allen, and all my players for that matter, to loosely follow their actual career path, I also want a realistic representation of what managing a squad might be like. If I am a GM trying to build a contender, and I go out and get, say, a Jim Ray Hart to anchor 3b for me, I don't want all of a sudden on October 10 to find Allen and Hart only available at 3b. That doesn't make any logical sense, if Allen has played 150+ games in LF the previous season.

I can understand a guy becoming unfit for a position. But shouldn't it be gradual?

From an OOTP perspective, I'm thinking this will stop happening if I turn recalc off. But, if I do that, then my stats will get more and more skewed, won't they?

Thoughts...ideas from the experts?

You're SOL as long as you have recalc on when it comes to defensive positions. And if you want all the stats to mirror real life, you need to keep recalc on. You need to decide which is more important to you.

Personally, I never play with recalc on since that takes away most of the fun and challenge for me.

Couldn't this issue be addressed by having recalc on but using fielding based on career, or 3 year?

You know, I always forget about that option... see, that right there proves I don't play with recalc on.
