My English Baseball League names (some of them are borrowed from other places):
EBL North Newcastle Brewers (Newcastle is well known for the breweries, and Newcastle Brown Ale) Manchester Millers (Victorian cotton industry) Liverpool Reds (obvious, but it's because the soccer team play in red) York Vikings (Viking history of the city) EBL Midlands Nottingham Outlaws (Robin Hood) Sheffield Owls (Sheffield Wednesday FC's nickname is the owls) Birmingham Bulls (There's a shopping centre in Birmingham called the Bullring) Derby Rams (another soccer team reference, Derby County this time) EBL South London Monarchs (Should be obvious lol) Brighton Rainbow (Brighton is known as a diverse, liberal city) Norwich Canaries (Borrowed the soccer team nickname...) Southampton Saints (Borrowed the soccer team nickname...) Minor League, etc Newark-on-Trent Cavaliers (Newark was the last royalist town to surrender in the English Civil war) |

This is a fun thread. Have always enjoyed reading about team names selected for fictional leagues.

I actually set up my template (on paper) last night. I'm starting a fictional league from scratch. A couple of my favorite nicknames:
New York Knights (from "The Natural") Chicago Mobsters (I mean, that one writes itself...either Mobsters or Breeze, but Breeze sounds a little gay for men's team. Isn't there a WNBA "Breeze"?) Tampa Trotters (after the well known horse track) Baltimore Juniors (after a certain retired ballplayer...and I know, Pimlico, blah blah blah...Tampa Trotters sounds better) Twin Cities Princes (after you-know-who) |

I think the Tampa Trotters would lead the league in runs scored.
Also, they'd be in a mighty big hurry to get around the base paths and back to the clubhouse, ifyaknowwhati'msaying

happyharrell,
I've taken that approach as well. I've designed my own map from scratch and am in the process of naming my cities and designing logos...I'll probably do unis too eventually. Anyways, my map consists of two continents, one of which contains cities+teams I've named after some of my favorite athletes, musical groups, movies/t.v. shows, etc, so I thought I'd share a few of the team names+logos. See if you can guess what they allude to (although a few are QUITE obvious)! EDIT: By the way, DreamTeams, I was checking out your solo league and I really like some of your ballparks. I'm interested in designing a few of my own but I have no idea where to start or how to edit/remodel parks. If you could offer any advice that would be awesome. I've been running a solo fictional league that I first developed many moons ago when I was a kid playing SI All-Time All-Star when I'd mix the players up. It was a World League with teams from major cities around the globe. I started with OOTP 7 (whatever the year was) using the compressed Historical files from Gambo/Garlan (I believe). After 25 years fictional players have begun to infiltrate the league. The league has expanded from the original 20 team World League and International Leagues in year 1 to it's current 40 team leagues. I just finished year 27, and aside from some of the HIGH averages for many of the new, fictional players, it's running pretty well. Some Names are obvious (Does EVERYONE with an international theme have a London Monarchs?), some are more obscure or just random. Cities may no longer be strictly major as I've sought geographic equity and 'small-markets' as well. Below are the teams and divisional set-ups (I have mixed it up some over the years, just for fun):
WORLD LEAGUE North America Division San Francisco Fog, Ottawa SnoMen, Washington Stars, Mexico City Aztecs, Montreal Royals South America Divison Lima Incas, Caracas Macaws, Rio De Janeiro Amazons, Montevideo Wanderers, Bogota Carib Europe- North Division Paris Gaules, Belfast Leprechauns, Berlin Walls, Oslo Vikings, London Monarchs Europe- South Division Athens Gods, Madrid Moors, Budapest Goulash, Rome Empire, Lisbon Ports Africa Division Nairobi Simbas, Cape Town Springboks, Marrakesh Express, Cote d'Ivoire Tusks, Cairo Pharohs Middle-East Division Delhi Cobras, Riyadh Camels, Jerusalem Stars, Istanbul Bulls, Amman Sheiks Asia Division Osaka Sun, Shanghai Pandas, Bejiing Ducks, Tokyo Islands, Rangoon Pythons Pacific Division Sydney Aborigines, Melbourne 'Roos, Brisbane Dingos, South Pacific Volcanos, Manila Gorillas INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE North America Division Vancouver Orcas, Seattle Sounders, Moose Factory Beast, Havana Rum Runners, Chicago Wind South America Division Quito Iguanas, Yucatan Mayans, Buenos Aires Rams, La Paz Llamas, Cabo San Lucas Mahi Mahi Europe- North Helsinki 'Cats, Glascow Scots, Moscow Czars, Reykjavik Snow Birds, Dublin Dubloons Europe- South Division Amsterdam 'Mills, Munich Bavarians, Venice Canals, Barcelona Cataloans, Bucharest Starlings Africa Division Maun Bushmen, Khartoum Kob, Casablanca Falcons, Harare Falls, Johannesburg Hyenas Middle-East Division Tehran Fire Ants, Tripoli Nomads, Damascus HeadHunters, Beirut Black Hawks, Calcutta Mongoose Asia Divison Kathmandu Sherpas, Seoul Swordfish, Kyoto Temples, Canton Chopsticks, Nagasaki Dragons Pacific Division Darwin Tortoise, Wellington Kiwis, Singapore Slings, Bangkok Thai, Jakarta Orangutans |

Being from Ohio and disliking the 'State up North', I've been thinking about setting up a 2x8 team Ohio-Michigan league. I haven't figured out quite how to configure it as I don't want teams in cities the size of Cleveland and Detroit competing against teams from towns the size of Saginaw and Lima. Also thought about setting this up as an independent or rookie league within another league structure, maybe from the whole Great Lakes region.

I'm planning on starting a UK fictional league once I get my main league (semi-historical replay from 1901) set up. Haven't decided exactly on 'major' league teams or alignments yet, but I'm thinking about: London Royals (gives them an associated 'colour' [Royal Blue] ; reflects the affluent suburbs). London Dockers (reflecting the working class areas of London). Manchester Millers / Rebels (Millers is, as you say, the obvious choice and a really cool one. But I'm thinking maybe 'Rebels' to go with the image of the city as a counter-cultural centre -- bit more modern). Sheffield Steelers (reference to the steel industry's history. Also a good sports team name, and I just like names that reference local industries and labour movements). Edinburgh Parliamentarians (Scottish parliament... I just like the way it abbreviates to 'Pars'). Cardiff Miners (should be obvious...) Birmingham (not sure yet. I want a name that references the large amount of canals in the city. 'Canalsiders' -- kind of awkward. 'Lock Keepers' -- excessively jaunty. Not sure.) Leeds Roses (as in the Yorkshirian white rose). I live in York at the moment, and when I give the city a minor league team (probably Leeds' AAA club), I'll go for the York Senecas. 'Senecas' just sounds cool, and the place has Roman heritage and whatnot. My U.S. 1901 semi-historical replay mostly inherits the name of clubs or has boring choices. But I'm using the 'St. Louis Navigators' -- which I think sounds cool, references the 'Gateway City' moniker and abbreviates nicely to the 'Navs' -- and the 'Pittsburgh Foundrymen', which I think is cool. I always call my Philadelphia team the 'Keystoners', which sounds decent but is a bugger for logos (how do you visually represent the idea of being a 'Keystoner'?) I've always wanted to call a team from the Home Counties the 'Commuters'. And their logo could be a guy in a car stuck in traffic on the M1 shaking his fist out of the window and/or looking at his watch in a slightly annoyed way. |

My minor leagues are usually a London and South East League, an East Midlands league and a South Coast League. Steelers is the nickname of Sheffields ice hockey team. Slightly off topic tangent related to that: The Sheffield Steelers hockey team play in blue and white, the Nottingham Panther hockey team play in black and gold. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers play in blue and white and the Pittsburgh Steelers play in black and gold... Last edited by Cryomaniac; 05-25-2009 at 07:07 PM. |

Ah, that's right. I knew that a Sheff sports team used the 'Steeler' name: wasn't sure which. That kind of reduces the appeal, then.
When I came to think of a Belfast team name, my first thought was to go to an IRA-inspired name for some reason. Maybe too soon. Not sure at what point an armed conflict becomes legitimate fodder for sports team name-related appropriation. |

Another minor league team name I've used is the Birkenhead Biscuits, after the band Half Man Half Biscuit. |

Cripes, an HMHB fan on the OOTP boards. That's quite incredible. To be fair, the Biscuits are probably the best thing about Birkenhead. Last edited by struggles_mightily; 05-25-2009 at 07:25 PM. |

26 team, 2 division world baseball league
promotion and relagation system. Bottom 4 of Division 1 and top 4 of division 2 play each cross ways (1st Div 2 vs last Div 1 etc), 4 first round winners stay in/get promted to division 1. The playoffs continue and on the other side of the bracket is the 8 top teams from Division 1, the winner of that bracket is then World Champion. The World Champion and the overall winner of the Relegation playoffs then meet in an all-star 3 game series. Anyway, here are the teams, in their original divisions: I have also done logos and unis for each team
Division 1 New York Knights Boston Blaze Los Angeles Lazers St. Louis Saints Chicago Condors Toronto Tornado Calgary Coyotes Montreal Maulers Tokyo Tigers Yokohama Lightning Osaka Orcas Fukuoka Fusion Hiroshima Horsemen Seoul Scarecrows Busan Bandits Daegu Dragons Beijing Bulls Mexico City Matador Tijuana Toritos Cancun Cyclones San Juan Sunrays Havana Hammerheads Shanghai Scorpions Santo Domingo Stars Oklahoma City Outlaws Las Vegas Vipers Division 2 Sydney Snappers Melbourne Monarchs Joberg Jazz Panama City Pumas Amsterdam Angels Madrid Majestics Barcelona Bees Rome Royales Paris Panthers London Lions Manchester MadCatz Lisbon Legends Moscow Mustangs Athens Aces Istanbul Impact Munich Magic Pyongyang Pirates Dubai Diesel Cairo Camels Riyadh Reds Kingston Klondikes Delhi Diamonds Caracas Chiefs Rio Ravens Buenos Aires Bears Santiago Sharks Last edited by muted79; 05-26-2009 at 11:08 AM. |
