I believe 6.5 was an expansion pack, So if you buy 6.5, you are buying 6.12 and 6.5.

You buy OOTP6 for sticker price (roughly $30) and then you can pickup 6.5 for an extra $10.

But that's not how books work... Return of the King didn't make The Two Towers obsolete.

"Alexander of Macedon" by Peter Green had its first edition published in 1970. The revised expanded (four times the length) second edition came out in 1974, but was only released in England. I'm reading the 1991 American printing of the second edition, and most of its forward is used to promote the updated third edition, projected to be released in 1995. Green spends five pages listing the things he got wrong in the second edition that will be corrected in the third (but not saying what the corrections will be), then he closes by thanking the reader for supporting him by buying his crappy second edition instead of waiting for the super-good third edition to come out. |

IMO... the reason 5.0 is free is to be nice and to give you a taste of what OOTP is "today" it's almost like a demo of the last few versions really... but 6.5 is a huge upgrade from OOTP 5. Version 6.5 was close to flawless... yeah it had some bugs that could be exploited but it was fairly solid and at it's time of release... it was (IMO) the best text based sports simulation (as a complete package) in any sport.
Version 6.5 represents the glory of every version leading up to it. I am hoping that OOTP X is the game we all wanted when the previous engine was put to pasture with 6.5 and we started on the new OOTP 2006 engine. There are some great OOTP 5 leagues out there... and some great 6.5 leagues out there... but I can not imagine being the commissioner of an online league using one of those versions. Catobase would be a requirement for me... as would BOSI and even though those two utilities were very cool they also required a LOT of work to update, much more so than OOTP:OU do today. AND then there are all the rules that IMO were a requirement (for online play) and required lots of policing to really make a league work right. You also could not release players as a GM in 5.0 and 6.5 as I recall in online play. OOTP 8 and 9 really shored up a lot of online league options that made the simulating process very easy for the commish/simmer... and that makes running a league a TON easier that it used to be in OOTP 5 and 6.5. I'm of the opinion that the statistical accuracy of 6.5 is still probably the best of any version of OOTP... but the options and ease of use for online play makes OOTP 9 and (baring any bugs) OOTP X a better option for most online leagues. OOTP 9 stats engine is not far off of OOTP 6.5, but well just have to see what OOTP X does for stats. Last edited by snnort; 05-22-2009 at 01:04 PM. |

Apparently a lot of people still buy 6.5 every year, because I remember reading that they still make a nice chunk of change off of it annually.

They are. 6.12 and 6.51 are compatible with each other for online league purposes. 6.51 offers a few new features and bugfixes to OOTP 6.12. I am told that the nominal cost was well worth it, but I never purchased 6.51, opting to sit on my wallet. |
