OOTP 10 Roster
Can the team give us any update on the roster that is coming with V.10. Last year's version wasn't really up to par -imo and other opinions as well. Just wondering if it's going to be a set to play with right at release date or is it something that we're going to have to wait for a mod person (cubby
) to create one? Thanks in advance for any insight! |

Can you be more specific about its flaws? What about it wasn't up to par?

Broth, I say unto you what I have been saying unto others who don't like this or that roster set since the first days of OOTP: if you don't like the available roster sets, don't complain, just sit down and make one yourself.
And if you think I am joking or cracking wise, be aware that I've made over a hundred roster sets for OOTP.

Sorry to ask - I guess this must be a sensitive issue on this board. |

Feel free to ask, it's not a sensitive issue to me. I was just wondering what you didn't like about it.
My initial impression is that it's not a high priority to Markus. He's probably concentrating on parts of the game, other than whether Jim Smith is at the Angels A-level club, or whether he's been promoted to AA in the past week sometime. I'd assume that, if accuracy of these rosters is a high priority to you, you'll be motivated to find the best, most current set available. Organizations make moves every day, so no roster is completely accurate past the day on which it's released. |

It's actually very good advice. It's why many of us who made roster sets got started making them. Complaining about roster sets is a lot like being invited to someone else's Christmas dinner as a guest and then criticizing the host's food at the table. So, if you don't like their set, don't complain about it, just get to work on your own. I did, and I guarantee you that you can make a set that you will be satisfied with.

I think you are missing one point Malleus. The game is now being advertised with major league rosters. If Markus is now making it a selling feature of the product, people have a right to inquire about the quality of that feature. I do not have a problem with the quality of the roster that comes with the game, but I think it is a valid inquiry.

I'd say it's more like going into a restaurant, paying for a meal, and complaining if you don't like it. Something I think we have the right to do. I don't know about you, but my friends don't charge me when they invite me for dinner.

I think this question is not only appropriate but also necessary. One of the selling points of the new version is a 2009 roster set. I also was very disappointed with the roster set that was included with the last release. The biggest problem was the individual ratings needed to be updated. So my question is:
1. Are all levels of baseball MLB down to Rookie ball accurate. Even if the player is not at the correct level, I would like to know that all players are rated and in the game. 2. Are all rosters filled with REAL players and including no fictional players. 3. Does the game come with accurate schedules for all levels? 4. Is the history information complete and correct (Team History and Player history and statistics). These questions are very important to me and many others that play out games with real players. I do feel it is a part of the game that is not discussed enough. The answers to these questions will indeed lead to my decision on if I will purchase the new version. Thanks in advance. |

I never realized that modern day players actually wanted accurate rosters all the way down to rookie ball (and schedules for that matter). While I don't think it is too much to expect that the 40 man rosters and maybe the top 200 prospects in the country be accurate, asking a two man programming team (plus a couple of volunteers) to produce accurate rosters for 4000+ players is a tad much in my opinion.

Pretty much. If they didn't advertise it, fine, but it's a major selling point.

I am gonna have to say, with the way the real rosters are being marketed, if they are not the best set ever, official or mod, then it will be a disappointment. Because whoever wrote that blurb about how good they will be, really only set themselves up for failure

If you don't like what you get in a roster set, roll your sleeves up and make it into what you want. It's not rocket science. Get some reference works and get to it. There's a lot of joy in having made a great roster set and also in having modified one that wasn't great into one that was.
Having personally redone all the data files that come with the game to my own satisfaction and having made all of my own roster sets since the first versions of the game I have utterly no sympathy on this subject. You need to be worrying about the engine, not the data. You can change the data any way you want to.

This is a question that will only be answered once the game is released.
I, too feel bad for Markus, I can already see a plethora of threads being created about how the roster set sucks because Joe Blow, who was in Rookie Ball did not develop into a hall of famer. What MD said, A roster set can be great on its face, but it is the game engines that determine the validity of any set. As it stands now, roster makers have been trying to cater their set to the engine, when some believe it should be the other way around. That's why I love fictional.
