One of the main voices of my childhood is now gone. I had the chance to meet and talk to him a couple times over the years growing up, and he was genuinely just a real joy to be around. Just a huge loss for the phillies, nfl films, and just baseball in general. With that said I'm thankful he got to call and witness the world series last year, and I had the chance to listen to one of the greatest broadcasters of all time.

I grew up listening to Harry Kallas and Richie Ashburn. Phillies games won't be the same. I was glad he finally got to make the winning world series call last year.

One of sport's most memorable voices. Sad to hear.

NFL Films will never be the same just as TWIB has never been the same after Mel Allen's death.

The voice of my life has been silenced. He was Phillies baseball on the radio for me. In fact, he was one of the people that inspired me to go into broadcasting in the first place.
A few years ago when I was working with a Missouri radio station I was at the ballpark interviewing players. I decided to go drop my stuff off in the press box and then go back down to field level. I went in and noticed the door to the visiting broadcast booth was open and there sat Harry. He was alone going through notes for the game. I stopped in and introduced myself and asked if I could interview him. He just laughed and asked why anyone would want to listen to him. He said he wanted to have a smoke and told me to come with him. An hour later we ended up back in the press box but not until he regaled me with stories of Richie Ashburn and the 1980 World Series and some of the more colorful guys to come through the organization. It was one of the best afternoons of my life. I've been listening to Kalas clips on YouTube this afternoon and tears are running down my face. I feel like I've lost a friend. I can't believe I won't hear him call another game. |

I imagine for Phillies fans they are feeling how I felt when Bob Murphy passed. The voice of your age, from a baseball perspective, is gone. That's a weird feeling.

As a lifetime Braves fan, Kalas had the honor of being an opposing announcer that I would always go out of the way to listen to when the teams met.
I believe no more perfect baseball voice could ever be made. |

I don't think it matters what fan of a team or what sport etc this guy just had the voice and personality that only a handful of others in the past have had. Here in Philadelphia it's literally a day of mourning and the statue of carlton by the stadium already is lined with flowers upon flowers from people. They were talking to Mitch Williams on CSN about harry and he had a great story. "We were at Los Angeles playing a series there back in 93 and had an off day before the next game so I bought six plane tickets to Reno and said harry you're coming with us. So we're all sitting there at the blackjack table, and I'm trying to decide whether or not to hit on a 13. So I hit an 8 and the next thing you know I hear..."Mitch--eee Poo Hits an eiggght on the thirteen for twenteeee one, what a play!!!"

There's nothing like baseball on the radio, and Harry Kalas was one of those timeless announcers with a true gift for storytelling. All the cliches about "making the game seem real" and "painting a picture with his words" were actually true about the way Harry called a game.
I feel like I just lost a boyhood friend. I know a lot of baseball fans feel the very same way.

Watching/listening to Phillies games will never be the same for me. I grew up listening to Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn call Phillies games. I have the DVDs of the Phillies World Series victory last year, with Harry and Wheels calling games and now I won't be able to listen to those games, especially the final game without breaking down.
You're the best Harry, we'll miss you. |

I've had Harry's winning call of the World Series as my ringtone since the Series. Truly a sad moment to the man who announced for the Phillies since the year I was born and the only announcer I really enjoyed listening to..

Harry was the reason I decided to get into broadcasting. Just hearing that voice has enough to put a smile on my face. I can't believe he's gone. WIP played the final inning of the World Series last year as I was driving from one job to another (clearly, I'm not in broadcasting yet), and I sat in the car, tearing up as I listened to the final out.
RIP Harry, you were once in a lifetime. |

Man, it's been a day and it's still hard to think about this. I think Jayson Stark over at ESPN put it best when he said that you never really felt like something happened in a game, even if you were at the stadium and saw it with your own eyes, without hearing Harry call it. When the Phillies won the World Series last year, or the division the year before, it really didn't sink in with me until I found a video somewhere with Harry's play by play on it. It's just a sad week for Phillies baseball.

Hey guys if any of you live in and around the philadelphia area are planning on going to the game tomorrow they're planning a tribute so they're telling everyone to get there early. I'll be in my usual seats in left center it should be special. Also, on Saturday the Phillies are having a public wake for harry at citizens bank on the field that they are opening at 8AM. It's first come basis and they said they will try to accommodate as many people as they can, but in my opinion there's going to be way way too many and they will have to cut it off so if you're planning on going get there early. The only other person to ever have their wake at an mlb stadium was none other than babe ruth and i couldnt think of a better person to follow him. They also said there's a service on the field for him starting at 1 PM. Not sure what it will be exactly but Schmidt, Carlton, most of the 93 team, and a ton of other legacies will be there so it should be pretty special. They're also planning on playing his signature home run call "outta here" over the pa after each phillies home run for the rest of the season. not sure how i feel about that yet though
