Teaching New Pitch?

Does anyone know the proper way to teach a new pitch to a minor league prospect? I am running in commish mode, so I have just been adding it in his profile. Is there a proper way to do this?

Whenever I see a kid with poor stuff, but excellent movement and control, I tend to add a curve ball, perhaps.

The pitches a player throws are not meaningful in the v9 and earlier versions of the game--with the exception of the knuckleball. Editing them is the only way to adjust them as far as I know.
