'Cleaning' a file?

Hi guy's! I'm currently playing a league where i'm in my 12th season, and i noticed the file isn't running as smoothly as it was in the beginning. Sometimes the whole game freezes for a minute when i try to sim... Now i understand this is probably because the file gets bigger, but can i do something about this? Deleting old box scores for example or other small files that i don't need anymore...? If so, how?

Tomas

I do this every off season.

Files That Are Safe To Delete To Improve Game Performance

messages - delete entire contents of this folder; NOTE: ALSO DELETE MESSAGE.DAT.
news/html - delete contents of all folders except images; do not delete the styles.css file.
news/txt - delete contents of leagues* and teams** folders; do not delete anything from players folder.

* Definitely delete the log.txt files generated from game logs. The other files are not large or numerous, so consider leaving them alone.
** You can find, isolate, and save the team numbered files that correspond to the team whose news is to be kept, if any.

I would do them on or shortly after January 1st (as long as your main league's majors season isn't in progress at that time).

The "Almanac" that gets generated will have preserved these files, from past seasons, if you have chosen for it to do so. I think that you can start your almanac at any time during a season, and later updates to it will add the material which had been generated since the last update. So, I'd make sure that an Almanac has been generated, which contains the material you want to delete, before you get rid of it, if you want to preserve and archive these things.

Well, the Almanac (if you're using it) gets generated at the end of the year, 31st Dec / 1st Jan. Doing it in pre-season like I do is fine, as the pre season starts in early Feb normally.

You make a good point. To me, the expression "offseason" is a little ambiguous, because there is the strictly-defined game-scheduled "Offseason" which starts in February, as you said. Yet the term "offseason" can also mean "any time that's not during the season," which would be any time between the end of the World Series and the first activities of the following season. I was giving an exact date, to avoid any confusion.

In real life, yes, in OOTP, no. Off-season is very specific in the game.

This should be a selectable option built in to the game for use as desired. Call it "Off-Season Cleaner" or the like.

They're in your league folder, in your saved_games folder.

It'll be named Yourleague.lg with Yourleague actually being the name of your league.

If you're completely lost, do a Windows "Search" (if you're on a Windows PC) and search for

*.lg

and that will show you where your league folders are.
