question about spring training ..

hello guys,

this is my first post. enjoyed reading all the information about this game. wish i had found it before i wasted $40 on the debacle Major League Manager 09

i have preordered OOTP 10 and have been enjoying the version 9 demo for about a week. i noticed in the demo if you play a major league 2008 game it starts the game on march 31, just before start of regular season. however, i tried creating a custom league and i think i got about 3 weeks of exhibition games. will version 10 offer spring training and the ability to use an expanded roster during pre-season games ?

thanks! keep up the good work!

Yep. The game has full Spring Training games with expanded rosters.

ST has been in OOTP for as far back as I can remember, and I started with ver 1.

Probably the Demo starts at a date after ST.

It's hard to imagine that it's that bad....

...but every review I've read has ripped it apart.

How "expanded" are the rosters? Can I use just my 40-man, or my entire organization?

Also, if I start a new universe, based on major league baseball, will that first season "skip" spring training, as it has been for the last few versions of OOTP?

ST wasn't skipped in the last few versions. When I've started new leagues the first day is always the beginning of the off-season, prior to ST.

As of OOTP 9, only the 40 man, dunno for v10 yet.

It always pays to read the reviews of new games on forums for similar games, like reading the MLM 09 reviews and comments here before deciding whether to buy it or not. I was going to buy MLM 09, but the comments here were so negative that I saved my $40 and am glad that I did.

I only get burned on games when I don't take the time to do due diligence like that.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Even I wanted to order that game... I wanted to know what a huge company like Take2 could come up with in the manager/simulation genre. Well, I'm glad I didn't waste $40.

The first season for me started Jan 1 so it didn't skip spring training. So far I have gotten around the roster limitations by setting the active roster to 50 and the secondary roster to 70 in the game setup. I am able to play spring games with an expanded roster of minor leaguers. I checked other rosters and they also were expanded by the AI. I'm hoping I can scale the roster sizes back as i move through the spring training schedule and then back to normal size once its over. Will keep you posted on this.

As far as graphics go the game is actually decent. The biggest issue is the interface. Just no easy way to navigate to screens you want to be on without going back and forth. Also the view of rosters/players is dreadful. Always having to scroll up and down to find people even when you are only looking at a screen of 9 or 10 players. I couldn't deal with these issues long enough to even evaluate the AI features and simulation.
But you can HAVE my copy !!

I hope you don't have your A. GM doing the moves for you because it will call the people back up you sent down because I haven't seen the Computer send down people before Spring Training is over like in real life.

Forty dollars for an ego-boost of that magnitude? Not a bad deal, I'd say.

That might be related to the issue of only being able to use the 40 man, rather than the whole organisation.

In my Nippon League there was five days off between the end of ST and the beginning of the season. 'Extra' players got sent down on the last off day.

The MLB roster sets start on March 31st, because they are intended to be Opening Day rosters... In the second year of a MLB sim, you will have normal spring training.

Non-MLB roster sets don't have that limitation, so you start at the beginning of January!
