The Washington Post THURSDAY 24 JUNE 1960 SENATORS' WIN STREAK REACHES TEN FOLLOWING CLEVELAND SWEEP Story by Brian George The Washington Senators demolished the defending American League Champion Cleveland Blues 11-5 yesterday to secure an outstanding road sweep and record their tenth consecutive victory. Led by four hits from 23 year-old 2nd baseman Julian Javier and 1st baseman Joe Cunningham's three RBIs the team from DC illustrated once again that they are a force to be reckoned with and taken seriously during this 1960 Major League Baseball season. They feasted on Cleveland's struggling starting pitcher Herb Score, collecting eleven hits off him in 6.1 innings, Score losing for the tenth time already this year. On an absolutely woeful afternoon for the home team Cleveland made four fielding errors, two of them while Score was on the mound accounting for three unearned runs. Taking a 5-1 lead into the 6th Washington put the game out of Cleveland's reach with two more runs in the frame and then four in the 7th. They smashed five singles and a double in the thirty-two minute inning, at which point most of the almost 36,000 fans in attendance started heading for the exits. Starting pitcher Pedro Ramos was brilliant for the Senators, producing a complete game effort in which he gave up eight hits but just one earned run. He's now a fantastic 15-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.18. Player of the Game Julian Javier was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI while Cunningham was 1-for-5, smoking a two-run homer down the right field line in the 3rd and driving in Javier on a ground out in the 5th. In what has been the most extraordinary sequence in the sport for some time the Senators and Yankees are currently on a combined 28-2 run since the 7th of June, New York winning their fifteenth consecutive game yesterday when they completed a three-game sweep of the White Sox in Chicago. Both teams have been 10-0 during the past eleven days, meaning that the Yankees are still the same 3.5 games ahead of Washington that they were back on the 12th. With the season still to reach it's mid-point these two ballclubs have already given MLB fans a thrilling duel and if it somehow continues through the next three months it could go down as the greatest pennant race in history. As at end of play, 23 June... 1ST: NEW YORK YANKEES 51-21 (.708) 2nd: Washington Senators 48-25 (.657), (3.5 G.B.) |

Thanks for the compliments, elfdog. I certainly am still taking created players. I'll find the sign-up thread and bump it for you. If you create a player I'll make sure to include him in the '61 rookie class.

The New York Age FRIDAY, 25 JUNE, 1960 SIXTEEN WINS IN A ROW! Story by Louis Greenberg The New York Yankees' remarkable winning streak reached sixteen games yesterday with a heartstopping, come-from-behind eleven-inning, 11-10 defeat of the Cleveland Blues. It was the seventh one-run victory during the streak, the Yankees rallying from a 9-1 deficit going into the 8th inning to triumph in a five-hour, six-minute marathon. Through the first four innings there was no indication that the game would explode into an offensive slugfest with the Yankees holding a 1-0 lead as the Blues lineup stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 5th. But a Russ Nixon grand slam home run and a two-run shot from Rocky Colavito blew the game open. The home team added three more runs in the 6th to go out to what appeared an insurmountable lead. But New York weren't going to let this fantastic win streak end with such a whimper. They loaded the bases on three consecutive walks to start the 8th before rookie Ron Santo took up his stance and cracked a 1-1 fastball over the fence in deep left-centre for the first home run of his career and the second grand slam of the game. The Blues were able to get out of the inning without any further damage but their lead had been reduced to four. Russ Nixon replied with his second home run in the bottom of the frame to make it 10-5 before the drama really started in the top of the 9th. Tony Kubek singled leading off before Mickey Mantle grounded into a fielder's choice to 2nd. Hank Bauer then reached when Cleveland shortstop Billy Moran bobbled a potential double-play ball, also allowing Mantle to take 2nd base. Willie McCovey's subsequent single to shallow left brought Mantle home and advanced Bauer to 2nd. By this time the Cleveland fans were getting nervous but worse was to come. Andy Carey cracked a double down the left field line to score Bauer and move McCovey to 3rd, at which point Blues manager Joe Gordon replaced his reliever Tom Acker with Chuck Churn. He walked Pete Whisenant and struck out Gil McDougald, meaning the Yankees trailed by three with two out and the bases loaded. Pinch hitter Jerry Lumpe came through big time, smashing a base-clearing double into the gap in right-centre to tie it up at 10-10. Most of the Cleveland Stadium crowd fell into a stunned silence, some of them booing their ballclub's inability to close out the game. Yogi Berra flied out to right to end the inning. Cleveland were unable to score in the bottom of the frame, shortstop Billy Moran grounding into a double play to send the game into extra innings. After Tony Kubek's flyout to start the 10th Mickey Mantle singled for his third hit of the afternoon before Hank Bauer hit a hard grounder to Moran, who returned the favour by instigating an inning-ending double play. The Blues went down in order in the bottom of the inning, Andy Carey then giving New York their first lead of the game since the 5th inning with a solo homer to deep left. Gil McDougald singled before relief pitcher Bill Henry's flyball to left became the third out. The Cleveland fans raised their voices, trying to inspire their team to a comeback. But it ended in disappointment. After Russ Nixon's leadoff walk gave them a glimmer of hope Willie Mays lined out to 1st and Rocky Colavito hit a grounder to 2nd, setting up a double play to end an extraordinary game. The Yankee players celebrated yet another incredible win while Cleveland's lineup were left to wonder how they had let it get away. "We had a win against the Orioles last week," said an ecstatic Mickey Mantle. "We were down 6-0 in the 5th and came back to win it in twelve. I didn't think anything would top that but this win today certainly has. I don't quite know how we managed to pull it off, but we did. There's no doubt in my mind that this has been one of the most unforgettable months of my career, and that's saying something." The Blues wasted a number of great performances, amongst them starting pitcher Gary Bell's six innings of work. He gave up six hits and struck out six batters, walking two and allowing no earned runs. Catcher Russ Nixon finished the game 3-for-5 with two homers and six RBI while Billy Moran was 4-for-5 with a home run. It was just another frustrating loss in what has been a disappointing campaign for the defending League Champions. They are now 34-41, having lost their last six and nine of their last ten. The Yankees are 52-21, a remarkable nineteen games ahead of the Blues. They are 4.5 ahead of the 2nd placed Senators, whose winning streak ended at ten when they went down to the Orioles in Baltimore yesterday 10-2 in the first of a four-game series. |

I'm not really happy with the speed at which I'm moving with this dynasty. As I've done in the past with other ones, I've fallen into the habit of giving too much detail.
When I started it my intention was to cover each season in a matter of weeks, not months. Once I complete the write-ups for June my plan is to change the format to monthly summaries for the opening half of the season and use a bit more detail as the months of August and September arrive. This will help to keep my interest in it fresh, which should make it easier for me to produce quality posts. k_c

THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE MONDAY, 28 JUNE, 1960 CUBS CLAW BACK DEFICIT Story by Brian Davison Last Tuesday the Chicago Cubs scored a 12-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. It was a win that appeared to signal the end of a terrible form slump for the defending World Champions, a win that also brought them within 1.5 games of the National League-leading Phillies. However, within two days the Pennsylvanian ballclub's cushion was back out to 3.5 games as they won the third and final game of the series on Wednesday and then triumphed against the Reds in Cincinnati on Thursday while the Cubs fell to the Cardinals at Wrigley. The two teams were victorious on Friday before Chicago enjoyed a profitable weekend, defeating St. Louis in the final two games of the series as the Phillies surprisingly lost back-to-back encounters to the Reds. So as we enter the new week the Cubs (42-35) are back where they were last Tuesday, sitting 1.5 games behind Philadelphia. In yesterday's outing against the Cardinals, Chicago had a 7-3 lead going into the 4th and held on in the face of a late St. Louis rally to win 9-8. Leftfielder Harry Anderson was named Player of the Game after a 2-for-5, three-RBI effort. He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st. St. Louis wasted a fantastic effort from their shortstop Maury Wills, who went 4-for-5 with three RBIs. The Cubs end the month with a three-game home set against the Giants. No doubt they'll be keen to avenge the four-game sweep San Francisco put on them two weeks ago at Candlestick Park. Last edited by kenyan_cheena; 03-31-2009 at 07:17 PM. |

THE OHIO EXPRESS Monday, 28 June, 1960 COLAVITO HOMERS FOR SIXTH GAME IN A ROW Story by Grady McCallum Cleveland Blues outfielder Rocky Colavito extended his home run hitting streak to six games yesterday in a 12-9 victory over the New York Yankees at Cleveland Stadium. Having ended the Bronx Bombers' incredible run of victories at sixteen on Friday the Blues secured a 3-1 series win yesterday, defeating the Yankees for the third day in a row. Colavito has been instrumental in each of those wins and in yesterday's outing he homered twice, smashing a three-run shot in the 6th and a solo effort in the 8th. He ended the game 3-for-4 with four RBI. On the season Colavito is hitting .333 with seventeen homers and fifty RBI. Seven of those homers have come during the remarkable purple patch he's currently in. He was assisted yesterday by fantastic performances from player of the game Minnie Minoso (5-for-5, 3 R, 4 RBI), Billy Moran (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and starting pitcher Herb Score, who produced his best outing of the season in containing the Yankees to four hits while striking out eleven batters in 6.2 innings of work. Taking the win, Score is now 6-10 with an ERA of 5.72. The Blues were leading 11-1 after seven innings and held on in the face of a late New York rally that included a six-run outburst in the 8th. Despite this encouraging trio of wins against the New Yorkers Cleveland still finds themselves a huge sixteen games behind the league leaders at 37-41. It'll be interesting to see if the Blues can build on these promising results and somehow get themselves into the pennant race during the weeks to come. |

McKinney Courier Gazette Story by Hank GrandersonWEDNESDAY 30 JUNE 1960 WEBB TRADED TO TIGERS McKinney-born MLB rookie catcher Martin Webb was traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Detroit Tigers yesterday in a deal that also shipped pitcher Frank Funk to the Michigan ballclub in exchange for 2nd baseman Pumpsie Green. Regular readers of the Gazette would be aware that we've been tracking Webb's progress through his rookie campaign and although it's disappointing that the Orioles have parted ways with him, he's certainly going to a team that has a better chance of contending into the future. As we reported, Baltimore sent Webb down to the minors on the 10th of June after they acquired former Pirates catcher Hobie Landrith off waivers and decided he'd be backing up regular starter Joe Ginsberg. Webb was averaging .159 with a home run and four RBI at the time and stayed in AA until the word came yesterday that he'd been sent to Detroit. Before the day was over the Tigers confirmed that Webb had been assigned to the active roster as backup to Michigan-born Charlie Lau. The Tigers were 42-37 and in 3rd place going into today's clash with the White Sox while the Orioles are floundering in 7th at 30-49. It will certainly be interesting following Webb's progress with the Tigers. Who knows, maybe he'll be able to contribute to the challenge of making up ground on the Yankees and Senators. |

To be honest, I'm thinking that I'll wait until the current season is over to change the format. This 1960 season feels like it's going to have a fantastic ending. What I'll probably do is be a bit more picky with what I choose to write about. When '61 rolls around I'll go the monthly route for April, May, June and July and then go into more detail in August and September. |

MILWAUKEE * WISCONSIN JOURNAL SENTINEL Wednesday 30 June 1960 BRAVES DOUBLE UP IN DEMOLITION OF PIRATES Story by Lomas Robertson The Milwaukee Braves followed up Sunday's series-closing 14-6 annihilation of San Francisco with a 13-2 series-opening decimation of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field yesterday. The Braves lineup was in a destructive mood, smashing the ball to all corners of the outfield as they recorded six doubles, two coming from leadoff hitter Johnny Temple. Rightfielder Jerry Lynch was the standout, though, hitting 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI. He doubled in the 1st and homered in the 6th. The Braves produced a five-run 1st to knock the boisterous Pittsburgh crowd out of the game and followed that up with five more in the 6th to make the score 11-1. 3rd baseman Eddie Mathews backed up his two-home run, six-RBI effort from Sunday by homering again and scoring three runs. He's batting .303 for the season with a team-leading 23 homers and 61 RBI. While their lineup was on fire starting pitcher Camilo Pascual made it all the more easier for them as he gave up just five hits, one earned run and struck out six in seven innings of work. He's 11-8 on the season with an impressive ERA of 2.91. It was Milwaukee's eighth win in twelve games and improved their record to 41-38, which sees them just four games behind the league-leading Phillies. The series in Pittsburgh continues today and concludes tomorrow before the Braves return home to host the Cubs, Reds and Dodgers in a ten-game homestand. |

THE MICHIGAN HERALD Thursday 1 July 1960 MAXWELL HITS THREE HOMERS IN WIN OVER WHITE SOX Story by Michael Fredricks The Detroit Tigers will enter July in red hot form after winning seven of their last eight June matchups, including yesterday's 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Tigers leadoff hitter Charlie Maxwell had a career day, smashing three solo home runs off White Sox starter Dick Donovan. The trio of dingers came in his first three at-bats, in the 1st, 3rd and 5th innings. He also singled in the 8th to finish the day 4-for-5. Reigning American League MVP Ken Boyer also got in on the act as he clobbered a two-run homer in the 7th. 2nd baseman Frank Bolling was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Without a doubt, the Tigers provided plenty of entertainment for the 34,035 fans in attendance. The lineup was assisted by a fantastic effort from starting pitcher Hank Aguirre. The 29 year-old went the distance, holding Chicago to just five hits on 104 pitches. He's now 8-8 on the season with an ERA of 3.44. Catching for him was Detroit's new rookie recruit, Texas native Martin Webb. The 21 year-old was only traded to Detroit by Baltimore on Tuesday but the Tigers wasted no time in getting him acquainted with Briggs Stadium, putting him in the starting lineup and resting regular starter Charlie Lau. Webb was 1-for-4 at the plate. At 43-37 the Tigers sit 10.5 games behind the league-leading Yankees and eight back from the 2nd placed Senators. With the season only just passing the halfway point there's no reason why they can't make up that ground during the coming months, especially if this rich form streak continues. |

The Cleveland Courier FRIDAY 2 JULY 1960 STREAKING COLAVITO WINS BATTER OF THE MONTH AWARD Story by Larry Jacobson The Cleveland Blues may be struggling and a good distance from being in the pennant race, but that didn't stop their star outfielder Rocky Colavito from having a fantastic time at the plate last month. After batting .322 with eleven home runs and 33 RBI Colavito was unsurprisingly named American League Batter of the Month for June, the first time he's won the award since August '58. Amazingly Rocky's June batting average was his lowest out of the first three months of the season after he recorded a .357 mark in April and .333 in May. The 26 year-old is hitting .332 for the season to date with 53 RBI and sixteen home runs. With the Blues (38-42) currently 15.5 games behind the league-leading Yankees one would think their chances of back-to-back pennants are slim but with the likes of Colavito, Willie Mays and Minnie Minoso in the lineup there's always hope. New York Yankees starter Whitey Ford was named the AL's Pitcher of the Month after going 6-1 with an ERA of 2.67 in seven starts. Ford struck out 33 batters in 57.1 innings of work, continuing what has been a consistently brilliant season from him to date. Through the end of June he's 17-3 in 21 starts with an ERA of 2.58. In the National League Philadelphia Phillies rightfielder Hank Aaron took out the batting award after hitting a remarkable .409 with eight home runs and 35 RBI. The former National League and World Series MVP has really started to feel comfortable in his new home following a relatively slow start to the year. On the season Aaron is averaging .322 with 62 RBI and fourteen homers. Milwaukee Braves righthander Jack Fisher was the senior circuit's Pitcher of the Month. He was a perfect 5-0 in six starts with an ERA of 1.80. Fisher struck out 28 batters in forty innings of work, helping the Braves stay in touch with the Phillies, Pirates and Cubs in the tight NL pennant race. |

MILWAUKEE * WISCONSIN JOURNAL SENTINEL Sunday 4 July 1960 ADCOCK DRIVES IN THREE AS BRAVES TORCH CUBS Story by Lomas Robertson The Milwaukee Braves clobbered Cubs starter Bob Anderson for seven runs in the first two innings and cruised the rest of the way in a 9-1 victory yesterday at a jam-packed County Stadium. After scoring three on two hits and a Chicago error in the 1st the Braves added four more in the 2nd, highlighted by Joe Adcock's two-out three-run blast to deep left field. Anderson was knocked out of the game after four innings, his shortest start of the season to date. Leadoff hitter Johnny Temple had a great afternoon for Milwaukee, batting 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Del Crandall (2-for-5, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) and rightfielder Jerry Lynch (2-for-4, 1 RBI) also contributed, but the real star of the day was starting pitcher Camilo Pascual. In seven innings of work he held the Cubs lineup to four hits while striking out ten and walking three on 124 pitches. On the season Pascual is now 12-8 with an outstanding ERA of 2.84. The win was a fine retort from the Braves after Chicago had taken Friday's series opener 10-7. The Braves are now 43-40, 1.5 games behind their regional rivals. They'll be eager to take today's series-closing matchup to reduce that deficit to half a game. |
