Finally over. It didn't get to 7 overtimes like the longest game ever. But it was at least the longest shot clock era game ever.

You were very close they were an 8 seed. Continue you on PS I want so see what your point is. To help you out on the other side Six teams, since the beginning of the seeding process, have entered the tournament ranked #1 in at least 1 poll and gone on to win the tournament: 1982: North Carolina 1992: Duke 1995: UCLA 2000: Michigan State 2001: Duke 2007: Florida Last edited by jbergey22; 03-13-2009 at 10:56 AM. |

The covert factor is gambling. How many offices have illegal pools based on how their brackets play out? How much money is wagered on specific games? The NCAA publicly tries to discourage such behavior, but you know much of the interest in the tournament is generated by the innumerable forms of wagering on it. It's just like the Super Bowl being the biggest event of the year in the Vegas sports books. |

This is true but Im not seeing too many people complaining about having more games to watch or play. There is really no reason to cut the field in half if no one is complaining about it IMO. The higher seeds love the opportunity to show what they can do(for recruiting and general exposure) and they help weed out the lower seeds that didnt come to play. By cutting the field who does it benefit? The fans lose out, the smaller schools lose out, many bigger schools will lose out on income for what reason??? I dont see how anyone wins by cutting back on the tourny. Basketball works perfect for a tourny like this as you can play every day if you needed to and it seems to be working just fine as generally the top teams to advance BUT it does weed out the underserving on occasion. You must really hate the way tennis does their majors Id guess as you could cut that field to 4 to find the players that could actually win especially now that Nadal has proven he can win anywhere. I think the NCAA baseball tournement has the perfect blend of keeping the tournement small enough to be manageable and with enough games to give a good idea or who the best team is.

My logic says if its not broke why mess with it. Its one of the most popular events in the US and you want to cut it in half because of "competitive integrity." Less than 20% of the teams make the tourny so Im not seeing how it is hurting the regular season one bit.

Are you sure you arent talking about NBA basketball or Major League Baseball? If you think the college basketball regular season puts you to sleep I'm not sure what you are looking for in a sport. The intensity of the Big East this year was unmatched. They had 12 of the top 50 teams in basketball fighting for 7-8 spots in this tourny. I dont know any other sports where 30-40 teams can gain or lose a spot in the tourny based on a win or a loss this late in the year. On that note I am getting out of this argument and we'll just have to agree to disagree.

There were high school games that were really exciting this year too. Nobody watched those either. |

You cant compare basketball and football. Football is a much more popular sport and their season is only played on Saturdays(mostly) and they only have an 11 game regular season. Its like comparing a MLB baseball game to an NFL game. Where exactly are you getting your information? You honestly think North Carolina vs Alcorn St in the NCAA tourny will draw better than either of the Duke/North Carolina games this year or the UConn/Syracuse games? |

I'd like to find the TV ratings for something like the UConn/Syracuse game.

Its called exposure. You are making comparisons on who is watching these games without realizing many games arent available to more than 1/3 the country. UConn/Syracuse get ESPN coverage as does Duke/North Carolina. Since all of the NCAA tourny is available through CBS it seems likely that much of what you say is true but has more to do with availability than it does interest level. |
