In customizing playoffs, what does split season do?

Just a hunch, but I think at midseason the standings are reset. The winners of each season then playoff for the championship.

The split-season format cuts the season into two separate halves. Each half has its own set of division winners. The first half and second half division winners then meet in the playoffs at the end of the season. For real-world examples, see MLB in 1981, or any of the Class A minor leagues.
Note that OOTP does not give you the option to specifically display second half standings, it only shows the overall standings. So while you'll be able to keep tabs on the first half playoff race, you won't really be able to see the second half playoff race unless you manually figure out the second half standings. This is an oversight in the game, and requests have been made to have it rectified. |
