The battle for the best franchise ever

The year is 2101. The setup is based on the current Major League Baseball format, with some new teams thrown in to balance out the leagues and divisions. There are six divisions with six teams each, and two subleagues. Here are the teams:

AL East
Baltimore Orioles
Boston Red Sox
Hartford Whalers
New York Yankees
Tampa Bay Rays
Toronto Blue Jays

AL Central
Chicago White Sox
Cleveland Indians
Detroit Tigers
Kansas City Royals
Minnesota Twins
New Orleans Jazz

AL West
Anaheim Angels
Oakland Athletics
Portland Pilots
San Antonio Roadrunners
Seattle Mariners
Texas Rangers

NL East
Atlanta Braves
Florida Marlins
Montreal Expos
New York Mets
Philadelphia Phillies
Washington Nationals

NL Central
Chicago Cubs
Cincinnati Reds
Houston Astros
Milwaukee Brewers
Pittsburgh Pirates
St. Louis Cardinals

NL West
Arizona Diamondbacks
Colorado Rockies
Las Vegas Aces
Los Angeles Dodgers
San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants

I will decide the best overall franchise with a point system. This point system will nicely reward teams for regular season success. However, the only team to be remembered after the season is the World Series winner, so there will be a nice bonus for playoff success too. In my universe, it's make the playoffs or bust, as nobody remembers who misses the playoffs.

Winning division = 50 points
Qualifying as wild card = 40 points
Missing playoffs = 0 points
Winning LDS = 5 points
Winning LCS = 10 points
Winning World Series = 15 points

Therefore, a team who wins the World Series as a division winner will earn 80 total points for the season. A team who wins the World Series as a wild card will earn 70 points for the season.

How many seasons do you plan to play before deciding the best overall franchise?

As many as OOTP lets me play without the game crashing. I think if I did a full century, that would be really neat.

I'll try to do a couple of seasons per week. My plan is to just simulate through the regular season and concentrate on the playoffs, because that's where the real fun is.

If somebody could let me know how to post team logos in this thread, that would be great. And I also need to know a more efficient way of posting standings and box scores.

Just save frequently, and take backups, and I would think a century wouldn't be a problem. I've simmed over a 100 seasons with no problems a couple of times. Good luck, a century would be neat.

As far as logos go, I'm probably not the best to ask, but you should be able to either attach images directly, or place them on a site like photobucket, and attach an image using the link.

For box scores, I open them in an external browser(firefox), and use a screen capture extension in firefox(screen grab), then crop them, and add them to photobucket as well. I'm sure there are many other ways as well, but that works best for me. I haven't done anything with standings yet, but a screen capture program would work as well, or even something as simple as hitting print screen, and pasting it into a program that can crop. If you are using windows, ms paint would work. Then save the image and upload to photobucket or similar site as well.

I'm sure there are other ways as well, so hopefully someone will post and give you some alternatives.

In the LCS, Detroit didn't have too much fun playing in Cleveland. In four games, they got outscored 53 to 12. That has to be some kind of record.

Also, I find it interesting how every series went the full seven games, except for the World Series.

I might tinker the league formats. I might just get rid of the divisions all together, and just take the top four teams in each conference to the playoffs. This is because everybody is playing a balanced schedule, so what's the point of having divisions? I might tinker with the points format as well if I get rid of divisions. I'll give the team with the best record bonus points. Maybe 60 points for 1st place, and the other three playoff teams get 50.

What I like about my points system is that a team can never win a World Series, but still be considered the best team ever if they make the playoffs consistently. For example, from 1991-2005 the Atlanta Braves made the playoffs 14 straight times and had only 1 World Series ring to show for it. The Florida Marlins won two World Series in that same time span, but only qualified for the playoffs twice, and they never even won their division. Atlanta was still clearly the better team, despite not having the hardware to show for it.

I'm pulling for my Tigers.

It's good to see them get on the board in the first year!

They had a rough 2nd year, falling to 71-91.

My Hartford Whalers are on the board, winning the division in the 2nd season! It's going to be tough rooting for them along with my New York Yankees. I don't know who I'll be rooting for if they ever play each other in the playoffs!

Just the thought of the Hartford Whalers playing in professional sports again (let alone in the playoffs) is enough to bring a smile to this life-long hockey fan!

Same here.

The Desperation in Denver thread has the Whalers too.

And the GUBA (my online league) has the Whalers as a AAA team.
