Has anyone addressed this yet? There are too many players starting off as DFA's, including Brian Matusz, Clay Bucholz, Jeff Samardjiza, Felix Pie, Homer Bailey, Armando Gallaraga, Nick Adenhart, Bobby Parnell, Jeff Niemann, Jarrod Saltamachia, and a bunch of others.

What about making them good enough to belong in the big leagues?

I believe that as soon as you start the league they will already go straight to the DFA list since we can't start the league as being in control of all teams.

Right, but what I am suggesting, most of the players that are being put on DFA have major league contracts, but their skill set has them not being major league ready.
If you increase their ratings enough to make them MLB ready, then the AI will hopefully either not DFA anyone, or at the very least DFA guys that are less valuable. |

Well raising their ratings kind of kills the point of rating guys in the first place, I don't think it would seem right to have Matsuz as a starter in Baltimore to open the year..
The work around we used before was to eliminate big league contracts for guys who obviously were not ready (Brackman, Porcello, etc.) which I'll do for Matsuz, and a few others. The others, I'm not sure I feel comfortable re-rating them to make them better or removing their contracts. I will note that some of these players haven't been rerated by any of the projection systems I really like (some of them were using Bill James or CHONE) so there's a chance that when I re-rate them with ZiPS or PECOTA they'll have better ratings and stick. Also some of them weren't rated correctly and were fixed (Parnell comes to mind). The last thing I can think of, is that when I play around with player evaluation %'s, weighing 2008 stats less might make the computer value these guys more. Buchholz should easily be in the Red Sox rotation on ratings, because off the top of my head I know every projection system out there (and me) loves him. He could be DFA'd/waivered because his 08 stats were so horrible. Lastly, some of the issue is just with AI management. The game doesn't always take into account future talent when holding onto players, so despite Bailey having some nice future ratings, his current ones make the Reds dump him. I'm not sure there's any workaround for that, as I doubt any of us would argue he's big league quality right now, but at the same time, in real life obviously the Reds would not DFA him. |

Would making the CPU value prospects higher make them place more value on future skill and maybe not DFA all those guys? Judging on how MLB execs are acting lately, it seems that prospects are the most highly valued commodity now.

Will this be compatible with OOTP 8 or is there a 2009 roster version for OOTP 8?

I have one that's http://hosted.filefront.com/mgsports/</B>
12-15-just rename the saved game to what ever you want to because it shouldn't say Cubbyfan's because it's my update and one that's 12-20 and one that's 12-29 but the date is after 1-1-09 meaning Teams have made moves in the game.

What is the latest official version to be released? I hate combing five pages for one download link. Is it still the link in the OP?

What are everyone's feelings on defensive ratings at positions the player has never played? I realize catcher should probably be reserved for just catchers, but a lot of the players have no ratings either in the infield or the outfield if they've never played there. (by ratings I mean range, error, arm, double play, not actual positional 2B/3B/SS ratings)
I think one problem this creates is that for guys who COULD potentially move, they cannot because they have a 1/1/1/1 across the board. Jeter's a good example, I've read talk about him moving to CF once his range diminishes further at SS, but currently that isn't possible in the game with his outfield ranges/arm/etc. so low. That being said, I don't want to make it too easy to move guys around and speculate myself on how well a player would play at another position. Anyone have thoughts on this? |

Just me, but I would do select players that seem logical, Jeter like you mentioned. A-Rod should be prepared for a move to 1b as well. The other possibility is to look at guys that played different positions in college or minors.
Another thing would be to make sure players have the ability to go back and play positions they used too. someone like Chipper Jones should be able to play a truly pathetic SS. I would also give all DH's a position. Frank Thomas and Jim Thome once played the field, so they haven't lost that skill, they just aren't as good as others on their teams. |

I used to give everyone who played somewhere ratings, but the problem we run into is with the OOTP AI. Unfortunately, if a guy can play horrible defense somewhere (like Chipper at SS vs. 3B), they will almost always put him at the position that maximizes his offensive value, defense be damned. So while you would like it to use him there only in the most extreme of circumstances, he'll end up starting.
