The media would have to start focusing on skill at the sport, not for being a asshat first. Dont' expect that to change anytime soon.
On mroe relevant news (and to put my previous statement into action a little), looks like we have our third victim coach wise, and a familiar face back behind the bench. Guess being the coach of the Laffs doesn't equal the black spot after all. NHL.com - News: Hurricanes name Maurice to replace Laviolette - 12/03/2008 |

I haven't had the chance to watch an NHL game in a long while, but last night I sat down and watched the Caps vs. Flyers game. That was a weird one; it's not often you see a team outshoot the opposition 48 to 28 (with plenty of real scoring chances among those 48 shots) and lose 1-7. Niittymäki was awesome (and Johnson and Theodore at the other end weren't).

And Nitti sucked versus Montréal a few days ago.
In any case, I hope Patrice Bergeron isn't in danger. We have hear a very talented guy, who plays an admirable brand of hockey and is the best forward on his team. Seeing him go down with a serious injury once was awful, but a second knock to the head, that was painful to watch.

Yeah - I don't think Sundin wanted this more than TSN/Sportsnet did. Now what the hell are they going to talk about until the trade deadline? |

Not NHL related, but a hockey storey I've been following, which came to a tragic ending Friday.

I think an idea the NHL might have to entertain is the presentation of the all-star game outside. The "Winter Classic" gets a much higher profile than the All-Star Game, and since the NHL is desperately looking for an identity for its all-star game, well, we might have a winner. Plus, it gets rid of one of the arguments against playing outside, that being that the game "counts". Finally, the all-star break during the holidays would probably be popular with the players and the teams' staffs.
That said, there are obviously some down sides. First, you can difficultly have them in half the markets. Second, I suppose it loses the NHL some revenue. I'd also like to say that fan voting is not that fantastic. I'm a Canadien fan, and it has 4 players in the Eastern starting lineup. Alexei Kovalev has no business being on the all-star team, and Carey Price, while one of the top 5 goaltenders in the East, and probably all-star worthy, has not been the most deserving this year. That said, I don't have a problem with either Andrei Markov or Mike Komisarek - I believe that they are respectively the best defender and the best stay-at-home defenseman in the Eastern Conference.

I thought I would put this argument out on the table. It was between me and one of my office mates. Two guys who follow the NHL but cannot get to see very many of the games.
Who is the better player? Crosby or Ovechkin? We realize they are two different styles of players. One is more there to support his teammates and one is more there to score goals and then support his teammates. But which one is better to build a franchise around? |

As for whose better, both bring a scoring punch, good passing, and what not so it boils down the their accomplishments to date. In that area Crosby is leading the pack. |

If I had to build a franchise around any player in the NHL, I'd pick Carey Price. Why? He's the best young goaltender in the NHL, and no player can have a bigger impact on your team than a goaltender. If I had to build a team for the next 2-3 years, I'd pick Roberto Luongo, the best goaltender in the NHL.
As for Ovechkin/Crosby, well, I'll put it this way: I'd build my franchise around Crosby before Ovechkin, but I think that Ovechkin, right now, is a better player. It's not much of a Lemieux/Gretzky comparison (a better one would be Malkin/Crosby; Malkin is just as good as the other two), but yes, they play a different style, and you can't really go wrong with either. It's like Lemieux/Gretzky - I think Lemieux was a far superior athlete and an overall just slightly better player than Gretzky, but I'd build my team around Gretzky if I had to pick.

Agree with Price, not just because of the fact that I support the Habs, but also because if your'e going to put a great player on your team, he goalie is the place to go. A great scorer in a team of average players wont' get you as far as a great goalie will.

I love Habs fans. I really do.
Give me Malkin or give me death. I do agree with LLN that Ovechkin is a better PLAYER than both of them at this time, but I'd take both Malkin and Crosby before Ovie if I'm drafting a team from scratch. Goalies grow on trees, and you can always build a trap (sorry, SYSTEM) around them. Right, Steve Mason? Last edited by Afino; 02-01-2009 at 01:35 PM. |
