Post HOB - 1983 Season Recap

GETTING TO BE OLD NEWS. BREWERS AND WHITE SOX IN ALCS AGAIN
For the third time in 4 years the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox will meet to determine the American League representative in the World Series.
The Brewers won their 4th straight East Division title in convincing fashion -winning a league best and franchise record 112 games. Bill Travers (22-4, 2.98) had an awesome year to lead the league's best pitching staff. Gary Ryerson (15-8, 4.35) , Moose Haas (14-6, 4.85) and American League rookie of the year Tom Candiotti (13-7, 3.52) more than made up for season ending injuries suffered by Larry Sorenson and Jim Slaton. Doug Jones (13-5, 1.67) had 42 saves. Fred Lynn (.315,35,135) did not win a third straight MVP award but did have another strong year, as did Pedro Guererro (.316,23,122), Paul Molitor (.324,24,116) and Gorman Thomas (.315,35,135).
1976 rookie of the year Mark Fidrych (24-3, 3.01) enjoyed the best season of his career and was the reason the Tigers finished second. Fidrych won the Welch Award for his efforts. Dave Rozema (15-12, 4.45), Toby Harrah (.351,18,80), John Wockenfuss (.316,12,85), Leon Roberts (.339,32,128) and Lou Whitaker (.312,14,115) also had a lot to do with Detroit's success.
For the third year in a row the Yankees finished in third place. Steve Kline (21-7, 2.26) had a career year for the New Yorkers. A lack of pitching again hurt the Red Sox as Ken Brett (10-3, 4.92) was the only starter with a winning record. John Tudor (12-16, 4.80) continues to look more and more like a 1 year wonder. The 1979 rookie of the year has never been able to match his debut season when he went 20-7.
Mike Boddicker (16-9, 4.67), Eddie Murray (.314,26,95) and Cal Ripken Jr. (.299,24,95) were the bright spots in another dark year for Baltimore. The Orioles havent finished above fifth since 1976 after dominating the early years of divisional play.
Leron Lee (.339,17,108) and Red Sox castoffs Bobby Bonds (.301,35,114) and Carlton Fisk (.298,25,103) continue to perform well with little support in Cleveland. After peaking in 1980 with 84 wins the Blue Jays have taken a step back for the third year in a row. The continued development of Jesse Barfield (.271,18,70) and George Bell (.288,18,75) gives Toronto fans some optimism for the future.

The White Sox have won the West Division title four of the last six years. The cast remains virtually unchanged from last year. The rotation is led by Joe Coleman (16-6, 3.25), Bart Johnson (16-9, 4.02) and Britt Burns (14-5, 4.13). Francisco Barrios (9-11, 5.78) struggled thru an injury riddled season but should be back to normal next year.
Second place California got its offense from Ken Landreaux (.341,13,90), Tom Brunansky (.280,21,113), Mickey Rivers (.310, 52sb) and Rance Mulliniks (.339,18,109). In Oakland, Vida Blue (15-9, 4.09), Reggie Jackson (.302,32,119) and Joe Rudi (.308,30,129) were the key players.
Frank White (.354,26,130) won the MVP award with the greatest season of his career. 5 time MVP Reggie Smith (.332,34,119) was his usual self with George Brett (.336,14,109) and Jose Cruz (.356,9,61) also contributing. Lyman Bostock (.351,13,92), Kent Hrbek (.349,32,123) and Bill Buckner (.345,17,90) were the key players in Minnesota.
In Texas, Pete Broberg (14-12, 4.16) and closer Tom Henke (4.97, 32 sv) enjoyed some success. The Mariners continue to struggle despite having the American League batting champ two years in a row. Steve Ontiveros (.361,6,63) won it this year with last years leader Rowland Office (.350,4,70) finishing 4th. The Mariners problem is the only player on their roster that even vaguely resembles a major league quality pitcher was closer Rick Honeycutt (2.99, 29sv).

Note: These are the final seasons on my old cpu and it was really sputtering so I did not monitor the league settings as well as I should have. Hence some rather embarrassing era and batting average numbers. They will be back in line in a season or two.

DODGERS AND CARDINALS REPEAT AS DIVISION WINNERS IN NATIONAL LEAGUE
For the second year in a row the NLCS will pit Los Angeles against St Louis.
The Dodgers finished 7 games ahead of both San Diego and Houston, two clubs that have never won a division title.
The Dodgers were led by slugger Nate Colbert (.348,37,123) who won the 4th MVP Award of his career. Colbert had plenty of help providing offense from players like Dave Parker (.331,16,109), Jeffrey Leonard (.307,25,101) and Bill Madlock (.337,24,122). The pitching staff included Bob Welch (15-8, 4.35), Don Sutton (14-7, 3.02) and rookie Sid Fernadez (13-8, 3.97). Closer Steve Howe had 37 saves.
Dave Winfield (.326,21,115), Ozzie Smith (.324,61sb) and Mike Caldwell (14-10, 3.19) led the Padres to a second place finish. Second year man Tony Gwynn hit .386 in spot duty and appears to have a batting crown or two in his future. J.R. Richard (19-5, 2.81) won his first Welch Award in leading the Astros to a second place tie. Scipio Spinks (16-6, 3.02) was a solid number two starter. Cesar Cedeno (.298,22,104) stole 31 bases and was the sparkplug that fired up the Houston offense.
Jack Clark (.364,27,109) led the National League in hitting but other than steady veteran Tony Conigliaro (.317,33,113) and surprising shortstop Ivan Dejesus (.324,16,82) many of the San Francisco players had subpar seasons. The Reds finished as low as fifth for just the second time since 1964. Dan Driessen (.354,13,70) and Johnny Bench (.318,27,105) led the offense while Mario Soto (12-9, 3.79) looks like he may regain the form he showed when he won 17 games in 1978. The Braves were last again, little wonder when their top 3 starters combined to go 13-46. Dale Murphy (.323,19,83) and Bob Horner (.279,30,101) again led the offense.

In the East Division the Cardinals relied on their big 3 starters: John Fulgham (14-9, 3.52), Steve Carlton (15-9, 4.04) and Bob Forsch (14-14, 5.45). Rookie Andy Van Slyke (.333,11,85) took some of the offensive pressure off of Ken Griffey (.337,14,104), Keith Hernandez (.325,10,91) and Stan Papi (.281,26,130). Shortstop Gary Templeton (.311,9,80) also had a fine season, stealing 41 bases.
After a couple of seasons at the bottom of the division, the Mets seem to be back on track. Rookie of the Year Darryl Strawberry (.320,31,105) had future MVP written all over him. Nolan Ryan (18-6, 2.81) and Tom Seaver (16-12, 3.65) each had strong seasons. The Pirates slipped to third despite the best efforts of catcher Milt May (.349,22,103) and thirdbaseman Darrell Evans (.306,32,94). Andre Dawson (.337,21,115), Larry Parrish (.287,26,101) and Barry Foote (.325,18, 90) were the big names for the fourth place Expos.
The fifth place Phillies havent finished in the upper half of the divsion since 1976 and this year was no exception. Richie Zisk (.343,20,122) and Ryne Sandberg (.311,15,102) were the stars in Philadelphia. The Cubs slipped to the basement from third place a year ago.

On May 3, Reggie Jackson hit a 7th inning homer off of Yankee pitcher Stan Bahnsen. It was Jackson's 500th career round tripper. Jackson's blast was the only highlight for Oakland that day as they fell to the Yankees 11-2 at Yankee Stadium.
On August 13, Tony Conigliaro became he 25th member of the 500 home run club. The Giants outfielder's historic shot came at the Houston Astrodome off of reliever Mark Ross.

Fred Lynn of Milwaukee tied an American League record by walking 5 times in the Brewers 17 inning marathon with Seattle on July 12th. The last American Leaguer to draw 5 free passes in a game was Rocky Colavito of Cleveland in 1970. The major league record is 6 walks in a game set by Brooklyn's Duke Snider in 1955.

AMERICAN LEAGUERS DOMINATE ALLSTAR GAME
Cleveland's Bobby Bonds hit a run homer to help the American League stars to a 9-3 win over their counterparts from the National League in the 1983 allstar game. Bonds was named the game's MVP for his efforts.

Jays deal Stieb
In what was likely the biggest deal of the season, the Toronto Blue Jays traded young pitcher Dave Stieb to Pittsburgh for 2B Willie Randolph and OF Joe Orsulak. Stieb was 9-15 with a 4.40 era this season. Randolph batted .286 in 50 games this season. He is two years removed from an allstar year but he suffered a serious injury at the end of that season and has yet to fully recover. The 21 year old Orsulak spent the entire year in the minors.

Next up will be the 1983 postseason.

1983 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
CHICAGO WHITE SOX vs MILWAUKEE BREWERS
The Brewers will attempt to make it to their first World Series after losing the last 3 American League Championship Series. Two of those three losses were to the White Sox including last season when the Sox went on to win the World Series. It was Chicago's 4th World Series in franchise history. In addition to 1982, the White Sox won it all in 1978 and 1963.
In both of the two previous ALCS meetings between these clubs it went the full 7 games.

GAME 1 - The White Sox blow game 1 wide open with an 8 run 5th inning enroute to an easy 12-4 victory. Dusty Baker homered and drove in 4 runs. Don Money, Jorge Orta and Mike Colborn each had two rbi's. Britt Burns went 6 innings for the win while Bill Travers took the loss.

GAME 2 - The Brewers delight the County Stadium fans by scoring 4 times in the last 3 innings including the winner in the bottom of the 9th to beat Chicago 5-4. Paul Molitor had 4 hits including a game ending rbi single to score Robin Yount. Fred Lynn hit a two run homer in the 7th inning to get the Brewers comeback started. Dusty Baker had 2 rbi's in a losing cause and now has 6 in two games. The closers recorded the decisions as Doug Jones gets the win and Terry Forster takes the loss.

GAME 3 - It's the Steve Brye show as the Milwaukee designated hitter drives in 4 runs and has 3 hits as the Brewers win 5-2 to take a 2 games to one lead. Gorman Thomas' solo homer accounted for the other run off of losing pitcher Francisco Barrios. Dusty Baker drove in both Chicago runs and now has 8 rbi's in three games. Gary Ryerson was the winning pitcher with Doug Jones getting the save.

GAME 4 - The Brewers get smart and walk Dusty Baker whenever there are runners on base but the man following him in the order did the damage this time. Don Money hit a 3 run homer as the White Sox evened the series with a 5-2 win. Britt Burns beat Bill Travers for the second time. Terry Forster made up for his game 2 collapse by earning the save.

GAME 5 - The White Sox win a tight one 3-2 as Forster saves his second straight game. Jose Ortiz hits a 2 run homer, a rarity for him as he has only averaged 1 homer every 83 at bats in the regular season. Joe Coleman gets the win while Moose Haas is the losing pitcher. Charlie Moore had 3 of the Brewers 10 hits in the game.

GAME 6 - Leadng 2-1 heading into the 9th the White Sox bring in Terry Forster to close out the series. Forster is looking for his third save of the series. Sixto Lezcano leads off with a double but Forster settles down and strikes out Gorman Thomas. Steve Brye pops up weakly to second baseman Orta and the White Sox are one out away from winning the series. Pinch hitter Mark Brouhard replaces the number 9 hitter Ron Theobold and Brouhard rips a double to score Lezcano with the tying run. Randy Ready comes on as a pinch runner and Charlie Moore ends the game with a single to score Ready giving the Brewers a 3-2 win. Doug Jones gets the win while Forster takes his second loss of the series. The Chicago papers are full of columns second guessing the White Sox for replacing Goose Gossage with Forster. Gossage had pitched 2 perfect innings in the game and has yet to allow a run in the series while Forster has now lost 2 games. However, he does have 2 saves as well.

GAME 7 - Three times the Brewers and White Sox have met in the ALCS and now all 3 have gone to a seventh game. Can Milwaukee finally win one? Bucky Dent quiets the Milwaukee fans with a solo homer in the third inning off of Bill Travers to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Chicago adds one more in the fifth and thanks to a Greg Walker homer the White Sox plate 3 more in the 6th. The rout is on as Chicago scores 3 times in the 8th inning and wins the game 8-2. Britt Burns pitches 7 shutout innings before giving the ball to Chico Escarraga. The Brewers score a pair in the bottom of the 8th but it is too little, too late and Milwaukee loses their 4th straight ALCS. Bill Travers is the goat of the series. After going 22-4 with a 2.98 era in the regular season he lost all 3 starts in the ALCS and had an era of 9.77. He has had little success in the postseason. (see chart below)

Don Money had a strong finish to the series to earn the MVP award. The White Sox thirdbaseman batted .464 with 5 rbi's and scored 5 runs. Chicago teammate Dusty Baker was the early favorite with 8 rbi's in 3 games but he did nothing the rest of the way.

How about Steve Ontiveros leading the AL in hitting? Wasn't he a pitcher? What happened here: was he converted, a bug?

Two different guys, Loompa. The third sacker played for the Cubs and Giants in the 70's. The pitcher played for Oak, Phi, and Sea from mid 80's to mid 90's (maybe longer, that's just where my Baseball Encylopedia stops! ) A little FYI for anyone that cares!

Ontiveros last appeared in the big leagues for the Red Sox in September 2000, last winter he was signed by the Mets to a minor league deal, but released prior to the season, so he's retired again.

There were two Steve Ontiveros' One was the pitcher that you guys are thinking of. The other one was a 3b for the Cubs in the late 70's early 80's.

You know if I read all of the posts then I won't make unnecessary ones.

Thanks for the Steve Ontiveros information. I guess I should have looked up the information myself, but I just figured that name wasn't too common and there probably would only be one. But my general baseball knowledge is jumping by leaps and bounds by playing this game.

The Ontiveros' are indeed two different players and unrelated as far as I can tell. The 3B was born in California in 1951. The pitcher was born 10 years later in New Mexico.

Here is how the HOB treated each of them.

Steven Robert Ontiveros
After winning the American League batting title in 1983 Steve Ontiveros' career fell apart. He struggled the following season and midway through the year lost his third base job to Juan Bernhardt. In 1985 Darnell Coles became the everyday thirdbaseman and Ontriveros never played in the majors again.
He doubled in his first major league at bat with San Francisco in 1973. He never played in a Giants uniform again as after spending the first half of 1974 in the minors he was dealt to Minnesota as a throw-in in the deal that sent Ed Goodson to the Twins for pitcher Jim Merritt. Ontiveros never got a shot to replace Eric Soderholm at third for the Twins so they dealt him to St Louis with catcher Butch Wynegar for outfielder Richie Zisk in July of 1976. Seattle selected him in the 1977 expansion draft.

The middle reliever made the allstar team as a rookie in 1985. In all he has made 4 allstar teams and is still pitching in 2000 at the age of 38.
In 1996, Ontiveros was in the second part of a 6 player deal made over 3 days between the Yankees and Oakland. Part one on May 4 had Mark McGwire go to New York for P Al Leiter and minor league 2B Matt Howard. The second part on May 7 sent Ontiveros to the Yankees for 1B Hal Morris and minor league 2B Robert Eenhoorn.

Sad, really, that the all-time hit king Paul Molitor's numbers need to be tainted by a bug like this one.

Actually, they were not tainted much at all.

Molitor's career batting average in the HOB was .316 compared to .306 in real life. When you look at his season by season batting averages compared to real life they fall in line quite nicely. It was real life injuries and the fact that he was so healthy in the HOB that made much more of an impact on his success than the league settings imo.
He managed to get nearly 2000 more at bats in the HOB because for 19 seasons he never had less than 589 at bats a season. While in real life injuries probably cost him more than 500 games.

Here are Molitor's season by season HOB and real life batting averages.

1983 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
ST LOUIS CARDINALS vs LOS ANGELES DODGERS
For the second year in a row the Cardinals and Dodgers meet for the right to represent the National League in the World Series. St Louis beat Los Angeles in 6 games last year before falling to the White Sox in the World Series. It was the 14th National League Pennant for the Cardinals, who have won the World Series on 7 occassions. The Dodgers have won 4 World Series titles and 7 National League Pennants.

GAME 1 - Last year the Dodgers Don Sutton beat John Fulgham and the Cardinals in the series opener. This year Fulgham turned the tables as he combined with three Cardinal relievers for a 6 hit 4-1 victory. Keith Hernandez' 3 run homer in the 7th inning off of Sutton was the big blow. Fulgham was the winning pitcher with Harry Parker getting the save.

GAME 2 - The Cardinals make it 2 straight wins on the road as Steve Carlton pitches quite possibly the best game of his career. Lefty limits the Dodgers to 2 hits and goes the distance in a 2-0 win. Tom Herr had 3 of the Cardinals 11 hits. Keith Hernandez and Stan Papi drove in the St Louis runs off of losing pitcher Bob Welch.

GAME 3 - What a game! Sid Fernandez and Bob Forsch are locked in a pitchers duel. The only run through 8 innings comes on a solo homer from Dodgers shortstop Ron Washington in the 7th inning. Fernandez takes the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning but surrenders a leadoff double to Larry Herndon. Steve Howe replaces Fernandez but a groundball to second from from Tom Paciorek moves Herndon to third. Pinch hitter Rafael Santana, who batted just .130 in the regular season, lifts a sacrifice fly that is just deep enough to score Herndon with the tying run.
Harry Parker pitches a 1-2-3 tenth inning for the Cardinals and in the bottom of the tenth St Louis scratches out a run on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly from Ken Griffey. Parker gets the win. Alejandro Pena pitches the 10th and takes the loss for LA. The Dodgers now trail the series 3-0.

GAME 4 - Rudy law and Dave Parker homer as the Dodgers stay alive with a 4-2 victory. Sutton beats Fulgham with Steve Howe getting the save. Catcher Butch Wynegar had 3 hits in a losing cause for St Louis.

GAME 5 - The Dodgers make a statement hammering Steve Carlton and the Cardinals 6-0. Winning pitcher Bob Welch helps his own cause with a pair of rbi's. Gene Tenace homered for LA. Welch and reliever Butch Metzger allow just 5 St Louis hits.

GAME 6 - Stan Papi hits a 3 run homer in the top of the first to give St Louis a quick lead but the Dodgers answer with 3 of their own in the second thanks to a Bill Madlock round tripper. Sid Fernandez and Bob Forsch both settle down and it remains 3-3 through 7 innings. In the 8th Keith Hernandez and Ken Griffey deliver rbi singles and the Cardinals add a run in the top of the ninth to make it 6-3. Down to their final at bat, the Dodgers cannot mount an attack against Harry Parker and the Cardinals closer earns his second save of the series. The 6-3 final gives the Cardinals a return trip to the World Series.

Cardinals first baseman Keith Hernandez is named the series MVP after batting .400 with 5 rbi's in the 6 games.

Next up will be the 1983 World Series. It features one of the most thrilling deciding games in the HOB.

1983 WORLD SERIES
ST LOUIS CARDINALS vs CHICAGO WHITE SOX
In a rematch of last year's Fall Classic the Cardinals will meet the Chicago White Sox for the third time in postseason action. The White Sox beat St Louis handily in 4 straight games last season. The first time these two clubs met was 1964 and the Cardinals won that series in 7 games.

GAME 1 - Leon Durham homers and drives in 4 runs to pace St Louis to an 8-5 victory in the opener. The game is tied until Terry Kennedy delivers a 2 run single in the 8th inning for the Cardinals. Setup man Al Hrabosky gets the win in relief of John Fulgham. Harry Parker earns his third save of the postseason. Reliever Pedro Borbon takes the loss for the White Sox.

GAME 2 - Steve Carlton is shaky in the first inning as he allows 4 hits and 2 walks. When it is all said and done the White Sox plate 3 runs. Carlton settles down from there allowing just 3 more hits in going the distance. Unfortunately for St Louis the damage is already done. The Cards manage just 2 runs and 4 hits off of Chicago starter Francisco Barrios. Terry Forster pitches a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the 3-2 Chicago victory.

GAME 3 - Jorge Orta hits a pair of homers to have the White Sox and Cardinals tied at 3 through 8 innings. In the 8th a costly 2 out error by Larry Herndon opens the floodgates and the White Sox score 4 times to win the game 7-4 and take a 2-1 series lead.

GAME 4 - Herndon homers to attone for his game 3 error. Stan Papi also goes deep as the Cardinals hang on for a 6-5 victory. It is a sloppy win by the Cards who make two errors in the ninth inning and nearly throw the game away. Fulgham gets the win with White Sox starter Joe Coleman taking the loss.

GAME 5 - Dusty Baker and Don Money each drive in 3 runs as the White Sox hammer Steve Carlton and a pair of relievers in an 11-4 Chicago win. Keith Hernandez had 3 hits, including a homer, in the loss. Francisco Barrios was the winner.

GAME 6 - The series shifts back to Chicago with the White Sox one win away from their second straight World Series title. Mike Tyson homers in the first inning after Andy Van Slyke had singled to give the Cardinals a quick 2-0 lead. Chicago answers with a run in the fifth and ties the game in the sixth on a Dusty Baker homerun. In the 8th, with Dan Spillner on to replace Chicago starter Britt Burns, Stan Papi delivers an rbi single to score Tyson with the go ahead run. John Urrea retires the White Sox in order in the ninth to save the victory for Bob Forsch. St Louis evens the series with a 3-2 win.

GAME 7 - Leon Durham singles in a pair of runs in the first inning to get the Cardinals off to a quick start against Chicago starter Joe Coleman but the White Sox respond almost as fast with a pair in the bottom of the second. In the fourth Greg Walker homers off of John Fulgham to make it 3-2 Chicago but Butch Wynegar's 6th inning solo blast ties the game back up at 3. In the 7th outfielder Randy Johnson (not the same guy) breaks the tie with a solo homer to chase Fulgham. StLouis answers right back in the top of the 8th as Larry Herndon singles in the tying run in the form of Stan Papi.
Both starters are gone now and niether team can score in the ninth inning. The story is the same in the 10th as the Cardinals threaten but neither team can score the series winning run. Each team is getting deeper into its bullpen. Pedro Borbon pitches an incident free top of the 10th for Chicago. Luis Deleon will try and do the same for St Louis. Chet Lemon leads off with a single and Deleon is quickly replaced by John Martin. Brian Downing flies out and there is one away. The next batter, seldom used backup catcher Pete Varney, delivers a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Lemon into scoring position. Bucky Dent steps to the plate and promptly delivers a series ending rbi single to score Lemon. The play at the plate was close but Lemon is ruled safe and the White Sox are World Champions.
My writing about this game doesnt really do it justice but I have watched virtually every HOB playoff game since 1940 and I cant remember a game that was more exciting than this one.

Bucky Dent is named series MVP mainly on the strength of his series winning him. Dent did bat .280 and scored 5 runs in the series plus played flawless defense at shortstop for the White Sox.

Next up the 1984 season.

Tiger Fan,

Amazing work you do, simply amazing!

being from Holland I saw the name Robert Eenhoorn popup. What did he do in HOB, did he ever get to the big leagues? What about Rikkert Faneyte?

Glad you enjoy the HOB. Both Eenhoorn and Faneyte made the majors in the HOB, but very briefly. Eenhoorn was the player of the game in his major league debut though.

Robert Eenhoorn
Born in Rotterdam, Holland, Eenhoorn played 37 games over 4 seasons in the major leagues in real life. You can view his real life stats here:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/e/eenhoro01.shtml

In the HOB, Eenhoorn played 25 games for the Yankees. He is still active but in the minor leagues at the end of the 2000 season.
He was called up to replace the injured Damaso Garcia at second base in late August of 1994. He had quite the major league debut hitting a 3 run homer with 2 out in the bottom of the 14th inning off of Oakland's Keith Atherton to give the Yankees a 10-9 victory over Oakland. The A's had scored two runs in the top of the 14th to take the lead. He was 2-for-7 in the game. His other career highlight was a 4 hit game against Minnesota on September 18th.
He played 2 games for the Yankees in 1995 but has been in the minors ever since.
On May 7, 1996 he was a throw-in in the deal that sent Hal Morris to Oakland for P Steve Ontiveros. It was the second half of the trade that brought Mark McGwire to the Big Apple. In July of 1997 he was moved to Milwaukee with 3B Jeff Cirillo and minor league P Brad Rigby for pitcher Mark Kiefer. He is still in the Brewers minor league system as of the end of the 2000 season.

Rikkert Faneyte
The outfielder from Amsterdam played 80 games for San Francisco and Texas in the mid-90's in real life. In the HOB, he is still active but it appears his major league career will consist of just pinch hit appearances.
In April of 1995 he was included in a trade that sent Albert Belle and minor league catcher Jim McNamara to Pittsburgh for pitcher Rick Reed. He remains in the Pirates minor league system at the end of the 2000 season.
