Suggestion
For historical era players who want to model the times when there was no FA the game misses out. Game needs to better model those times.

Reason
Right now, there is no tweaking of game settings that anywhere near gives a satisfactory result. You can turn off FA, but then you pretty much lose all need to negotiate contracts. The game will hand out contracts without you. Sure the players then had no leverage but the holdout, and they could get mad, be a clubhouse problem, even force a trade if a contract pushed on them was inadequate to their taste. Retaining a need to negotiate to keep a happy team was a part of the game then. Since we already have a player happiness value, it can be used to reflect the players happiness with pre FA contracts. ( There is a related new game ability needed to support a player status of 'holdout'.)

For historical era players who want to model the times when there was no draft the game misses out. Game needs to better model those times.

Reason
Right now, there is no tweaking of game settings that anywhere near gives a satisfactory result. You can turn off the draft, but the games handling of this situation leaves a lot to be desired. While most players were signed to minor league farm teams, or bought from independent minor league teams, very few were signed directly to the major team without any previous history. The game now puts too many players directly with the major team without those types of prior history.

One problem is that independent leagues are treated by the game as major league (despite their actual league level) and the major team may trade with them, but not treat them as was actually much more usual, a market to purchase players. Minor league financials, as mentioned elsewhere, among other things, would help to facilitate better modeling of this. Minor league teams needed to sell those players.

And of course, most players started in the lower minors, whether farm teams or independent teams.

Suggestion

When you're in a game and sim a half-inning, inning, etc, replace pitchers just like you would real life.

Reason

I can't tell you how many times I've given up a big (read: 6 or 7 run) inning and my pitcher STAYS IN THE GAME because I just simmed that half inning. It's maddening and makes me want to play out every inning of every game, which I don't want to always do.

I noted in another thread the fact that computer baseball sims cannot replicate certain traits of tabletop baseball games -- the suspense of rolling the dice and making adjustments to the results based on various factors specific to each play; the tactile quality of cards and dice; the charm of an old-fashioned game, etc. How, I wonder, could OOTP incorporate some of these "tabletop" qualities in its game?

Suggestions:

1. Baseball cards: allow the user to customize and print baseball cards.
2. Charts and graphs: supplement the text display with an occasional chart or graph.
3. Base advancement: allow the manager to choose whether or not to send a baserunner. (This would be an OPTION for use when playing out a game.)
4. In-game "snapshot" tabs: see the description below.

Reason:

To enhance the intangible qualities of a baseball sim (as explained above). It would also help the user to appreciate the differences between players (and their influence on the outcome of a game).

Priority:

Medium-high.

IN-GAME "SNAPSHOT" TABS:

These tabs would be available to the manager in-game. Each would "collect" the data pertinent to an in-game strategy decision. For example,

1. BASE STEALING

This tab would contain the data most relevant to a stolen base decision.

pitcher: hold rating
catcher: arm rating (+ current stats)
baserunner: stealing bases rating (+ current stats)
count: show count
outs: show outs
batter: contact rating, AvoidK rating
on-deck: show on-deck batter
defensive position: hold runner (or not)

2. ADVANCE BASE

This tab would contain the data related to the decision to send (or hold) a base runner.

fielder: arm rating (+ stats)
baserunner: baserunning rating
playing surface: grass or turf
outs: show outs
count: show count

3. BUNT

This tab would contain the data related to the decision to bunt.

infield depth: normal, infield in, etc.
P/C/3B/1B: fielding ratings
batter: sac bunt rating (+ current stats), bunt for hit rating
defensive position: hold runner (or not)
outs: show outs
count: show count

4. DOUBLE PLAY

This tab would contain the data related to playing to induce a DP ball.

infield depth: normal, infield in, etc.
infield position: normal - cheat toward second
infielders: defensive ratings (incl. Turn DP)
pitcher: GB %
batter: speed rating
outs: show outs
count: show count

Allow Transactions to be filtered by transaction type such as:
  • Signings
  • Releases
  • Trades
  • Promotions/Demotions
  • Staff Signings/Firings
Reason
The current level of transaction sorting is pretty high level. While major transactions does filter things down to roster moves and such, it still requires some fishing through tons of minor league rosters moves to dig out trades and signings and such. it would be great to be able to see specific types of transactions either on the screen in a list or in the HTML Reports.

Suggestion:
Historical players in feeder leagues.
It would be cool to have historical players enter the feeder leagues, and not just appear for the amature draft. All real players could be created as 16yr olds in a Highschool leagues, then an option of if a player enters his draft year in the appropriate year, or randomly through his college/highschool career.

Reason-Tres cool factor;

Suggestion
Fix the problem of 7 day lineups in the minor leagues not being applied properly.

Reason
Why shouldn't it work?

Players in the minors get tired and often consequently injured even when the settings for 7 day lineup are turned on and backup players are designated.

Priority
High. Its a bug repair.

Suggestion
Allow for randomly generated friendships or enmities between players, as well as noting any family ties.

Reason
Adds flavor for fictional leagues, putting a story behind faces. Would allow for some influence of in-game events. Good friends are more likely to sign with the same team in some cases (Clemens and Pettite), while enemies are more likely to get hit by pitches or fight with one another (Omar Vizquel and Jose Mesa). Brothers have been known to stick together at times (Giles, Gonzales). Could provide a hook for news stories.

Priority
Low.

SUGGESTION: Allow for better control of which box scores and game logs are saved.

REASON - Playing in "God Mode" I don't have a human team or human league. Therefore to save the box scores and game logs of my primary major league I have to set it to save the files from all leagues. In a full global universe that is a lot of files which eats up disk space very quickly. Please make this part of the league set up screen so that you ca designate the file saving settings league by league.

PRIORITY - Medium to High

Suggestion
Work on the feeder leagues.

Reason
There hasn't been any work done to this area since 06. High School teams that have a history of getting players into college/mlb needs to become reality. College teams could be given prestige/classroom/recruiting/location in order to recruit players during recruiting proccess.

Priority
In your opinion, how important is this suggestion?

Suggestion
When setting up a fictional league at the Major League Level with playoffs disabled, the wild-card standings continue to display and an exhibition tie-breaker game is played at the end of the season if the 2nd place teams are tied.

suggestion: add a check box to 'disable non-championship tie-breakers'

Reason
It will allow for a true non-playoff format at the Major League level

Suggestion
Within the areas where we are able to create/edit news stories... create a function that allows us to set a date for a new news story to arrive, or at what rate it should arrive. For instance in a fictional league I created I use promotion & relegation each season.
So I would like to be able to create a news story regarding the date promotion & relegation should take place, then set a date for when it arrives each season.

Reason
It would be fun

Nationality/Ethnicity

I'd like for the game to take into account that not all regions of a country are identical with regard to ethnicity. For example, a hispanic American should be more likely to come from California than Iowa, and a French Canadian should be more likely to come from Quebec than Alberta. This obviously isn't a huge issue, but it would add to the game's realism.

Inherited runners

suggestion:
The game should keep track of % of inherited runners who score, not just in the boxscore.

reason:
It's an important stat for relievers.

Suggestion
Players sent to Winter leagues should not have their attitude go haywire.

Make leagues that are designated winter/instructional and have no effect on player morale on entering or leaving the league. And winter/instructional designation is also independent of the league competitive level setting.

Reason
Current model really misses.

In Game Substitution of Injured Players

Suggestion:
Disable requirement of immediate substitution of injured players.

Reason:
Player gets injured while your team is up to bat. If the player is not on base or the batter, the game requires an immediate substitution, even at times when it's a day-to-day type injury. This is especially problematic if a pitcher in a non-DH league gets injured on the bases, for example, if they were thrown out at a base. Even if it is not the final out of the inning, a sub is needed. Suppose the inning continues and the pitcher spot pops up again, and you've already put in a relief pitcher there. Either that pitcher must hit, or you've wasted a player. Suppose the inning doesn't continue and you've put in a position player, now you need to put a pitcher in, and a player is wasted. Also, if it is a day-to-day type injury, the manager should be allowed to keep the player in, despite the injury.

Priority:
High.

Suggestion:
Option to bring in CL for tied 9th inning game.

Reason:
My team has lost quite a few games because my stud closer is still in the pen, while one of the setup men comes in and blows the game for me. I can't see why this would be that hard to implement, and is something that varies from team to team.
