who to make it through?
I agree that Sam Langford will probably have an easy win over Roscoe Toles but then he will be taking on the winner of the Johnson v. Baer fight and that could be a tough one.
Ali is always a safe bet but I fancy Joe Jeanette....... |

Shock Defeat For Ali
In a result that has left the boxing world gasping with shock, Muhammed Ali was knocked out of the All Time Heavyweight Divisional competition in the 3rd round by 'Smokin' Joe Frazier.
Frazier won by unanimous decision after a blistering display of boxing. In what was a comprehensive defeat of the boxer many know as 'The Greatest', the judges scored the bout 93-97,91-99 and 92-98 in favour of Frazier. |

And not too much a shock here, after all, the case can be made that Smokin Joe might have won 2 of their 3 fights....and he did win the BIG one, their first encounter with the HW title on the line and both undefeated.... |

Thats true - but then I always preferred Ali in the pre-Vietnam days when many would have argued that he was at his best. Would he have beaten Frazier back then? Who knows - not according to this tourney though!
Anyway, next fight is Louis v. Foreman and its just about to take place. I'd like Louis to win but its going to be real tough against the fighter that many say has the biggest punch in boxing history..... |

Joe Louis v. George Foreman
Joe Louis coasted to an easy win over Big George Foreman, winning by unanimous decision. He battered Foreman senseless due to his quicker handspeed and the scorecards at the end reflected this. The scores were 97-94, 98-92, 98-92 in Louis' favour.

Sam Langford v. Roscoe Toles
Both fighters went at it in this one and both caused physical injury - Toles suffering swelling of his left eye and Langford being left with a bloody nose. But it was the injuries of Langford that caused the ref to declare a TKO in the 4th. Roscoe Toles wins a hard fought place in the quarter finals.

Jack Dempsey v. Ernie Terrell
Terrell disappointingly lost due to disqualification as for rabbit punchinh Dempsey during this fight which was stopped in the 5th. Terrell was putting up a good fight and had knocked Dempsey to the canvas in the 4th.
Terrell was ahead 38-36 on two judges scorecards, while the 3rd put Dempsey ahead 37-38 so it would have been interesting to see if Dempsey could have come back. Never mind he has earned his place in the Quarter Finals. |

Joe Jeanette v. Riddick Bowe
Surprised at Riddick Bowe beating a well known great but he managed it in this closely fought contest. Bout was won by unanimous decision, 96-94, 96-95, 96-94 in favour of Bowe.

Sonny Liston v. Jersey Joe Walcott
This was always going to be a contest of punching power over technical boxing skill and in the end good old punching power won out when Liston rearranged Walcotts face into various interesting shapes before sending him to lullaby land in the 6th.

Jack Johnson v. Max Baer
Complete demolition of Baer by Johnson led to the ref declaring a TKO in the 3rd. Baer had run out of steam by the end of the 2nd.

Jimmy Ellis v. Max Baer
Ellis won by unanimous decision. A brief rally by Miske in the 5th caused Ellis some trouble by tiring him out but he had recovered by the next round.
The scorecards were 97-95, 97-96 and 98-95 in favour of Ellis |

Joe Frazier v. Riddick Bowe
I'm surprised at Fraziers poor performance in this fight. Swelling under the left eye caused the ref to jump in and declare a TKO victory for Bowe in the 10th. Bowe had already slammed Frazier to the deck in the same round with a thudding blow to the ribcage. Frazier looked utterly out of his depth in any case, our expert had the fight scored 84-88 in favour of Bowe and the judges had the following scores:
85-87,83-87 and 84-86. Bowe earns a place in the semis - does he deserve it? He will face either Jack Johnson or Roscoe Toles during the semi-final stage. |

Joe Louis v. Sonny Liston
Liston was expected to put up more of a fight in this contest but Louis mad him look like a rank amateur.
Louis managed a huge cross after only 17 seconds of the first round. Liston clinched to avoid a further attack from Louis but shortly after the ref made them break, an overhand right from Louis fell like a scythe and knocked Liston to the canvas. Liston took the count but still looked groggy when he stood up on his feet. Louis pummeled him repeatedly with devastating hooks and the ref jumped in and declared a TKO victory for Louis at 2:52 of the first round. Louis is now the favourite to win this competition and will face either Jack Dempsey or Jimmy Ellis in the semis. |

Roscoe Toles v. Jack Johnson
Johnson won this bout by unanimous decision. Scorecards were 97-94, 96-95 and 98-93 in favour of Johnson who now progresses to the semi finals to face Riddick Bowe.
Toles performed well in the early rounds getting ahead on points but after about the 4th round, Johnson pulled ahead. Towards the end of the fight in the 7th or 8th round it looked as if Johnson had rum out of energy and Toles could take advantage of that but Johnson continued to outperform and outpunch Toles for the rest of the bout. |

Jack Dempsey v. Jimmy Ellis
Ellis was no match for Dempsey, being knocked down twice, once in the 2nd round and once in the 10th. He was saved by the bell following the second knockdown but Dempsey outpunched him throughout the fight.
There were brief occasions when Ellis came back, winning the 6th convincingly. The 6th and 9th were the only rounds where Ellis really put up a fight though and the scorecards reflected this. Scorecards were 97-90 in favour of Dempsey from all three judges. Dempsey faces Joe Louis in what promises to be an exciting and close semi final bout. |

Round 1
Bow takes a flurry of punches to the body almost as soon as the bell goes.
Johnson wallops Bowe with a blow to the liver! Bowe backs into a neutral corner and Johnson follows him - and what a blow...Johnson has just landed a powerful right to Bowe, just above the waistline! Riddick is protecting his body here but that is leaving his head vulnerable. Johnson comes up short with a hook. As Johnson slides into a corner, Bowe tries to double up with the jab but neither find their mark. And Johnson throws a solid combination to Bowes head! Johnson dips down to land a body shot...but no he has quickly come up and landed a quick hook to Bowes head which has him hurt! Both fighters are now being cautious...both staying out of range of each other. Bowe did say he wanted to start fast but he hasnt found his rhythm. A hard cross from Johnson lands square on Bowes chin. Bowe manages to swing himself into an uppercut from Johnson. And the bell goes for the end of Round One |
