Muhammed Ali v. Sam McVey

Muhammed Ali gave McVey a thorough battering in this fight. McVey did well in the opening round but after that it was one sided. Ali caused a swelling under his opponents right eye and managed to knock him to the canvas 3 times towards the end of the bout.

Ali won almost every round on the judges scorecard and was scored 293-268.

Joe Louis v. Lennox Lewis

In this embarrassing bout, Lewis was knocked to the canvas in the opening round. He managed to get up again but shortly afterwards a hook smashed into his jaw and the ref declared a TKO in Round 1!

Louis flung 47 punches in total and Lewis managed a pathetic 6 before succumbing to 'The Brown Bomber'.

Rocky Marciano v. Sam Langford

In the biggest upset of the competition thus far, Rocky Marciano was stopped in the 6th round by Sam Langford.

Marciano mauled Langford in the opening round but it was after that that the 'Brockton Blockbuster' failed to perform to the expected standard. A hook to the jaw in Round 6 dropped him to the canvas. When he got up, Marciano was still shaky on his legs and sensing his opportunity, Langford tried to finish him off. Marciano was saved only by the ref declaring a TKO. A disappointing result as Marciano was one of the favourites for the tournament.

Jack Dempsey v. Lee Ramage

Dempsey managed a majority points decision against Ramage but it was a closely fought contest with Dempsey managing to pull ahead by knocking Ramage to the canvas in the 9th.

Sonny Liston v. George Godfrey

Someone was smiling on Liston as he was behind on all the judges scorecards and looked to be all at sea in this bout. But he opened up in the 5th round and battered Godfrey to the canvas scoring a KO.

Jimmy Ellis v. George Chuvalo

Ellis managed to make Chuvalo look like an amateur in this fight and won by unanimous decision. Ellis' progress has been surprising in this competition as many didnt expect him to progress beyond the 1st round let alone make it to the 3rd!

Joe Frazier v. Serguei Lyackhovich

Joe Frazier didnt disappoint as he dispatched his opponent by TKO in the final minute of the final round in spite of suffering a cut over his left eye in the 6th. He still managed to close both of Lyackhovichs eyes during the fight and knock him to the canvas in the 9th and 10th before the ref jumped in and ended the carnage.

George Foreman v. Paolino Uzcudun

Uzcudun did well to go the distance with a big puncher like Foreman but in the end he still lost by unanimous decision. Foreman progresses to the 3rd Round.

In spite of knocking Toles onto his backside in the second, Witherspoon was outboxed and lost a majority decision.

Terrells handspeed was too much for the slower Jackson and he won convincingly by unanimous decision.

Riddick Bowe v. Arturo Godoy

Bowe appeared to be struggling in the opening 3 rounds of this bout before being subjected to a battering by Bowes fists in the 4th which forced the ref to jump between them and declare a TKO victory for Bowe.

Jersey Joe Walcott v. Joe Gardner

Walcott fought on in spite of a cut under his left eye due to a flurry of punches from Gardner. With blood dripping down his face onto his chest, Walcott outboxed his opponent to win by unanimous decision.

Max Schmeling v, Max Baer

Schmeling looked as if he might have been able to outbox Baer but shortly after falling to the canvas in the 2nd Round, his hopes of progressing to the 3rd Round of both the bout and this competition evaporated as the ref jumped in and declared a TKO victory for Baer.

Billy Miske v. Gregorio Peralta

Miske managed to physically injure Peralta to secure his place in the 3rd round by TKO victory in the 8th Round of what may well have been a close points decision.
