Fletcher Stops Pazienza in 11

Vinny Pazienza (19-2-0-12) was a bloody mess as referee Jay Nady waved off the bout in the eleventh round of a scheduled twelve. Anthony Fletcher (16-0-0-3) picked up the NABF Lightweight Championship with his second victory of the year. This was Anthony's second victory by TKO of the year as he stopped James Busceme in six back in February. This fight was on it's way to a fantastic finish as Pazienza stormed back after dropping the first three rounds. Pazienza's trouble's began in the second round when a Fletcher jab opened a nasty cut above his right eye. Pazienza got back in the fight in the fourth as he was able to finally land some clean punches on the jaw of Fletcher. Pazienza then won the sixth and seventh rounds with crips clean combos, Pazienza's cut opened in both the seventh and eighth round. Entering the tenth Pazienza felt he was behind and had his biggest round of the fight as he blasted Fletcher with vicious straight rights and brutal combos. I'm amazed Fletcher held upto the clean bombs that were landing. Pazienza came out agin in the eleventh trying to put Fletcher away and a Fletcher hook opened the cut up again and this time the ringside physician could not ignore the mask of blood that covered Pazienza's face. The scores at the time of the stoppage were 96-95 twice for Fletcher and 96-95 for Pazienza. This is the second loss in a row for Pazienza who dropped a ten round unanimous decison to Esteban Dejesus back in January. When asked what's next Pazienza responded "I'll be back everyone knows I was gonna stop this kid, he was wearin down and I was gonna get em". This would definately make for a great rematch but if I were Paz I would maybe take an easy bout then go from there.

In the co-feature what a bout that took place between #10 ranked Sean O'Grady (22-0-0-19) and #9 ranked Deuk-Koo Kim (17-1-0-8). This could be fight of the month if not for the horrible stoppage by ringsie physician Francisco Jaume. These two men stood and traded for seven rounds with both men landing incredible power shots. Kim was cut over the right eye in the second round when O'Grady landed a beautiful right hook. Kim seemed the quicker of the two as he seemed to beat O'Grady to the punch time and time again. Both men showed great chins as neither fighter was ever hurt or wobbled. During rounds four, five and six O'grady climbed back into the fight as he was able to outwork Kim. In the seventh Kim was having a huge round when an O'Grady jab reopened the cut above Kim's right eye that led Dr Jaume to stop the fight. You would think they would have given Kim a chance considering this was the first time the doc had examined the cut. Scorecards were 57-57 across the board at the time of the stoppage. Kim had outlanded the 5-1 favorite O'Grady 222-149. Kim is definately deserving of a rematch but there is already talk of a Ray Mancini, Sean O'Grady showdown for the vacant WBA Championship. Should Kim rebound with a good win he may get himslef in line for a title shot and a rematch with O'Grady should O'grady win.

On the undercard Hilmer Kenty (10-2-0-3) easily outpointed Jaguar Kakizawa (9-2-0-1) over eight rounds by scores of 77-75, 76-76 (What????) and 78-74). Carlos Uribe (2-0-0-0) picked up his second pro victory with a four round unanimous decision victory over Jorge Castillo (0-4-0-0), scores 39-36 across the board. Lou Bizzarro (2-0-0-0) also picked up his second victory of the year by easily outpointing Will McNeill (0-5-0-0) over four rounds. And finally newcomer Leonard Tavarez (1-0-0-0) won a four round majority decision over Brahim Abiola (0-3-0-0) scores 39-37 twice and 38-38

In May Livingstone Bramble (25-0-0-11) will face Jim Watt (22-0-0-19) for the vacant WBC Lightweight Championship. On the same card Jimmy Paul (22-0-1-17) will face Edwin Rosario (30-1-0-27) for the vacant IBF Championship.

Jr Welterweight Bouts Fight Card I April 86

Youngsters Showcased

In a night designed for show casing some of the new talent in the Jr Welterweight division some performed as expected and others disappointed. In the opening bout American Paul Fujii (2-0-0-1) looked impressive as he cruised to a four round unanimous decision victory over Dawson Davis (0-6-0-0). Fujii appeared on his way to a second knockout victory when he dropped Davis in the first round but Davis managed to survive the round and the fight. Scores were 40-35 twice and 40-36. Next we had Englishman Des Rea (0-0-2-0) looking for his first pro victory after fighting to a draw in his pro debut back in February. Results didn't change for Rea as again he was only able to manage a draw versus Frank Clapp (0-3-1-0). I personally thought Rea deserved the decision but the judges didn't agree two scored it 38-38 while the third scored for Clapp 39-37. Next up was France's Rene Roque (0-2-0-0) who was completely outclassed by Louis Lemming (2-2-0-1). Roque's only round won was the third. Lemming boxed from the outside and picked Roque apart. Roque should maybe choose a new profession. In the next bout we had Spain's Jose Luis Torcida (1-1-0-0) looking to rebound from a 4 round majority decision loss in his pro debut taking on Dani Durano (0-6-0-0). This was a different Torcida then we saw back in February. He controlled this fight from the beginning and boxed beautifully just dominating Durano with jabs and straight right hands. Scores 39-37 twice and to my amazement 38-38. I scored for Torcido 40-36. Next up was the first of the two big prospects performing tonight Bruno Arcari (2-0-0-0). Arcari faced Brenden Maylem (0-3-0-0) in a four round bout. Arcari also dominated completely only draw back was Arcari suffered a hand injury early in the first round. This did not discourage Arcari as he continued to use the right hand and land some devestating punches. Arcari looked impressive winning by scores of 40-36 across the board. In the main event was the next prospect Antonio Cervantes (2-0-0-1) who showed poise and discipline in stopping Ramon Garcia (0-6-0-0) in three rounds. Cervantes came out using the jab to set up his wicked right hand shots. He almost seemed like he was just gonna do enough to get by then in the third a huge combo exploded off the chin of Garcia who was counted out at 1:34. Cervantes did as expected and is a fighter to watch as he shows great skill and poise for someone so young.

Very enjoyable! I'm glad Mel Turnbow evened his record with a decisive win, but sad that George Chaplin got DQd, as happened in Prof's Teophilo thread. He wasn't a dirty fighter!

Keep reporting on Mel's progress, as he has many(?) fans out here!

I was looking forward to that fight myself. But Bramble is @ prime already and Mancini is still pre-prime and is a better match up with Sean O'Grady as he is still at pre-prime himself. The ratings difference between Bramble and Mancini is huge right now so hopefully Mancini will hit prime relatively soon and a more competative match up can take place.

I just read this universe from the beginning! It brings back some great memories. What year are you going to fight through? Are you going to take it all the way to the present?

That's the plan Originally I brought in all fighters from 65-85 and ran three years of history. I then brought in the rookie fighters of 86 and 64. So next year I will bring in 87 and 63. so it's like a replay and reverse history if that makes any sense. Thanks for following Jim/ And if there is a particular fighter you would like me to showcase or follow just let me know and I'll spotlight there fights

Patrizio Olivia Dominates In EBU Championship

Italian Patrizio Olivia (19-1-0-1) captured the EBU Jr Welterweight Championship with a dominating performance over Clinton McKenzie (11-4-0-2). McKenzie started well winning the first round as he used a great jab and counter rights. It all went bad for McKenzie in the second round as he was dropped by a wild overhand right that landed right on the button. He rose at eight and Olivia who is not known as a finisher went after McKenzie trying to end it. Olivia wasn't able to stop McKenzie but McKenzie's right eye was all but closed as the second round ended. How McKenzie survived the match with his eye that bad is beyond me but he showed some heart. McKenzie never gave up and actually landed some big punches but as he is not a heavy handed puncher himself Olivia was never hurt. Olivia controlled this bout from the second round on with the use of a great jab and some crisp combos. Olivia's conditioning was also impressive as he didn't show fatigue until the last round. Scores were 117-111 twice and 116-112.

In the co-feature #10 ranked Rene Arredondo (19-1-0-15) scored an impressive tenth round knockout victory over #8 ranked Terry Marsh (16-1-2-0). Arredondo started quickly winning four of the first five rounds. Arredondo landed some huge bombs on the chin of Marsh who showed a great chin up until the knockout. Arredondo hurt Marsh early in the second and went for the kill but Marsh was able to withstand the punsihment. In the fifith an Arredondo hook opened a gash over the left eye of Marsh. The sixth round may have been round of the year as the outgunned Marsh stood and traded with Arredondo and actually gave better then he received. That was Marsh's best round early in the tenth an incredible Arredondo uppercut landed right on the button and Marsh finally succumbed to the punches he had been eatting all night. Marsh was counted out at :33 of the tenth and final round.

On the undercard Jimmy Heair (13-2-3-8) scored an eight round unanimous decision over Darryl Tyson (14-2-0-0). Heair jumped out quickly winning the first three rounds. Tyson won the fourth and fifth but was outscored in the final three rounds. Scores were 77-75 twice and 78-74 all for Heair. Amazingly Tyson outlanded Heair 238-180. Next we had Willie Chikomo (9-4-1-3) facing Abdel Arrow (5-10-2-1) in a rematch of a fight that Arrow won by split decision back in January. Chikomo didn't leave this one in the hands of the judges as a single right hand dropped Arrow for a ten count at :51 of the fifth round. Angel Vargas (1-0-1-0) won a gift four round decision over Tom Hickman (1-3-0-0). Vargas who was out of shape looked horrible as he was outworked by Hickman in my eyes but the judges scored for Vargas 39-37 twice and 39-37 for Hickman. And finally the opening bout had Roger Zami (0-1-1-0) score a draw versus Francis Berriman (0-1-1-0). Again I felt Zami deserved the nod but me and the judges have been on a different page all night.

I have a boxing Magazine collection from 1973 - 2002. Plus Ring Magazines from the 1950's that I inherited (believe it or not!). When I'm board (not as much these days, I crack open an air tight box and just carefully take one out and start reading. It's like a journey back in time.

Reading the names and matchups in your universe is like a smorgasbord of memories. It has me thinking, I want to use that fighter, and that fighter, and that fighter, etc. .

I look forward to seeing Edwin Rosario have his moment in the sun when you get around to putting him into action. I'll never forget his demolition of Bramble! Or his getting demolished by Ramirez - turning his back and not knowing where he was. Classic blasts from the past! Jose Luis Ramirez sure could take a shot.

Rosario's demolition of Bramble made me a happy man for weeks as Mancini was my favorite fighter and I was glad to see Bramble get hammered. Really pissed me off to see how Mancini had so many problems with Bramble and then Bramble finishes his career with like 20 losses. Rosario will be in action next month I believe taking on Jimmy Paul.

My friend loved Bramble and thought he had an iron chin. Bramble was never the same after getting mowed down by Rosario. He became sort of an ESPN club fighter who fought a good 30 seconds out of every round the way he did against Boom Boom Mancini.

Ray Mancini was practically a household name back then. For awhile, I thought Harry Arroyo was going to be just as popular. I still remember him saving his title at the very end against Terrance Alli.

Welterweight Bouts April 86 Fight Card I

Young Welterweights Showcased

London England was the site for a four match fight card to showcase some of the international youngsters trying to make a name for them selfs on the Welterweight scene. In the opening bout we had New Zealand's Monty Bhana (1-0-1-0) battle to a four round majority draw against Vic Beaman (0-5-2-0). It was a close four round battle that I thought Bhana edged but ponly one judge agreed with me and scored for Bhana 39-37 while the other two judges scored it 38-38. Bhana outlanded Beaman 96-78. The next match saw Philipino Bimbo Canaya (2-0-0-0) easily outpoint Salla Afiba (0-2-0-0) 40-36 on all three cards. Canya showed a great jab and great counter punching ability. In the cofeature we had Marcel Cerdan Jr (1-0-1-1) stop Clive Goose (0-5-0-0) in the fourth and final round on a cut. The first punch Cerdan landed of the fight opened a nasty gash over Goose's right eye. The eye was examined by the ringside physciain in the second, third and again in the fourth when the bout was stopped. Cerdan looked impressive using superior boxing skills he looked alot better then he did in his pro debut back in February against Jim Schultz in which he walked away with a draw. The main event had Spain's Poli Diaz (1-0-1-0) battle to a four round draw against Julio Alvarado (0-5-0-0). Again I thought Diaz deserved the decision as he landed the harder punches even staggering Alvarado badly in the fourth and final round. I had it scored 39-37 for Diaz while all three judges scored 38-38. All in all not a great night for the showcased fighters but the one silver lining is even though they didn't all win none of them lost.

I can honestly say I hated Bramble with a purple passion and I'm pretty sure there wasn't a happier person then me (maybe Mancini) to see him get blasted out of there. Damn shame how Rosario's career ended and I don't care what the judges say he beat Camacho (second most hated fighter on my list).even before Mancini got screwed in the decision against him

Yeah, Rosario was supposed to be the "next Duran." He hit Camacho with huge shots. I couldn't believe Camacho survived that fight. He became a safety first fighter after that fight and was no longer the exciting fighter he was a Jr. Lightweight (when he would knock people out).

Espana Stops Cuevas In Eight To Capture SABC Welterweight Championship

As Crisanto Espana (18-0-0-16) and Pipino Cuevas (17-1-0-17) entered the ring both men were undefeated and had never tasted the canvas. Before the night was up that would all change in what was an incredible bout that was amazingly dominated by the 5-2 underdog Crisanto Espana. Midway thru the first a Cuevas hook dropped Espana for a five count. Espana rose on rubbery legs but managed to survive the round. In the second both men stood and traded heavy leather. Every punch thrown was intended to end the fight. Late in the second an Espana hook dropped Cuevas for a quick three count. This was the first time Cuevas had been knocked off his feet. The third round saw both men exchanging bombs again and late in the round an Espana overhand right landed right on the button and he scored a flash knockdown as Cuevas was up at one. Espana continued to outland Cuevas in the fifth and sixth round as he seemd the fresher of the two. As the sixth round opened both men appeared to be fatigued. Midway thru the sixth Espana launched a one two combo that exploded off the chin of Cuevas, he was dropped for the third time of the night this time for a seven count. As the round closed Cuevas' right eye was showing swelling. Espana clearly won the seventh round as Cuevas seemed to coast for what would eventually be his final stand. In the eighth Espana came out looking to end it as did Cuevas. Both men launched right hooks with Espana's getting there first and Cuevas just slumped to the canvas and was counted out. Espana ran around the ring in celebraition of the victory. "No one expected me to win this fight and I showed everyone I'm for real."

In the co-feature we had #11 ranked Wilfredo Benitez (21-0-0-12) win a wide unanimous decision victory over #8 ranked Mauricio Bravo (24-1-0-12). Benitez was cleary the faster of the two and showed it by landing an impressive jab and solid right hands. Bravo's best round was the seventh as he landed a great uppercut that dropped Benitez for a 3 count. Benitez was shaken but used his great jab to keep Bravo away. Benitez was back in control in the final three rounds even scoring a knockdown of Bravo in the tenth. Benitez tried to end it but Bravo showed a decent defense and managed to last to the final bell. Scores were 98-93 and 97-91 twice. The support bout featured Italian Allesandro Duran (13-1-1-1) winning a close eight round decision over Donovan Boucher (12-3-0-9). Both men took turns winning each of the first six rounds. Duran took control in the seventh as Boucher seemed spent. Duran controlled the seventh and eighth rounds with a great jab and wicked combos. Scores were 78-74 and 77-75 twice. Next was Miguel Barreto (13-3-1-2) looking to rebound from a fifth round TKO loss to Bobby Joe Young back in January taking on Kevin Rooney (11-4-1-5). Barreto controlled this bout from the opening bell as he was far to quick for the plodding Rooney who was unable to land anything cleanly on Barreto who showed great ring movement. Scores were 79-73, 77-75 and 77-76. Barreto landed at a 47% connect rate. Youngsters Ted Whitfield (2-0-0-0) and David Thio (2-0-0-1) looked impressive in winning four round decisions over lesser opponents.

Ayala Stops Van Horn In 10

Tony Ayala (24-1-0-23) stopped Darin Van Horn (23-2-0-9) in the tenth round of a scheduled twelve to win the vacant NABF Jr Middleweight Championship. Many thought Van Horn would try and box to stay away from the heavy handed Ayala instead Van Horn showed his metal by standing and trading and giving as good as he got. Late in the first Ayala seemed to catch Van Horn cold with an uppercut that dropped Van Horn for an eight count. When Van Horn rose you can see he wasn't hurt badly he stayed down to get the full eight count. In the second Van Horn landed some incredible bombs that Ayala absorbed without any problems. Both men exhanged horrific power shots thats were landing flush and both men absorbed a brutal beating. In the sixth Van Horn was teeing off on Ayala who was beginning to show swelling under his right eye. Ayala was in a tougher battle then I'm sure he expected and as the fight entered the ninth he seemed tired and Van Horn took advantage and again had a big round as he just pasted Ayala with hard right hooks and brutal uppercuts. As the tenth round began Van Horn sensed he was behind and went for it and :20 into the tenth a wicked Ayala hook dropped Van Horn for a nine count. I was amazed Van Horn was able to get to his feet and with 2:30 to go in the round Van Horn was in trouble. Ayala proceeded to hit Van Horn with crippling rights and lefts and amazingly Van Horn would not go dows, Vic Drakulich finally stepped in at 2:35 to halt the bout.Ayala showed a great chin and incredible power, you knew it was only a matter of time the way Ayala was landing. Van Horn himself showed more toughness then people would have expected. Ayala is slowly going up the ranks and will be a tough foe for whoever he faces next.

In the co-feature we had #7 ranked Carlos Herrera (23-1-0-17) a 7-1 favorite being upset by #8 ranked Jae-Do Yuh (19-0-0-9) who stopped Herrera in the fifth round. Yuh came out strong in the first and landed great combos. Herrera seemed a little confused. The confusion was gone in the second as a Herrera hook dropped Yuh for a six count. Yuh got to his feet and survived the remainder of the round. Herrera also controlled the third and fourth rounds as Herrera was landing the harder punches. Yuh never panicked he just went about the business of trying to win this fight. Early in the fifth an explosive Yuh uppercut caught Herrera flush and dropped him for a five count. He may have gotten up to quickly because Yuh jumped all over him and was landing damaging blow after damaging blow until Brian Garry jumped in to save Herrera from further punishment. This was a huge win for Yuh who is sure to jump in the rankings. Also on the card was up and comer Carlos Albarado (10-0-0-5) who methodically broke down Jean-Piere Iniama (9-5-1-1) and stopped him in the fifth round. Also on the card Anthony Stephens (2-0-0-0) and Gypsy Joe Harris (2-0-0-0) scored four round unainmous decision victories oveer lesser opponents. Angel Beltre (0-1-1-0) remained winless in his pro career as he was easily outpointed by TC Armando Alonso (1-10-0-0)

Ramos and Shuler Battle For NABF Title

Alex Ramos (15-0-0-10) and James Shuler (16-1-0-11) waged a twelve round war for the vacant NABF Middleweight Championship. When all was said and done Ramos earned the nods by scores of 115-107, 115-109 and 115-108. Don't let the scores fool you this bout was anything but easy as both men took a horendous beatig over the twelve rounds. Ramos scored knockdowns in rounds six (2) seven and eight and Ramos tasted the canvas himself in the tenth. Shuler showed tremendous heart in the loss. By the tenth round Shulers right eye was swollen shut and he never stopped coming and actually had a huge final round as he was trying to score the knockout. "This is the toughest S.O.B. I've ever faught in my life" Ramos had to say after the bout. Both men will be exciting to watch in the future.

In the co-feature he had #8 ranked Marvelous Marvin Hagler (27-0-0-26) appearing for the first time in 86 taking on #16 ranked John LoCicero (19-1-1-10). Hagler wated no time as he hurt Locicero with a sizzling combonation. LoCicero tried to retreat but Hagler was all over him and a wicked right cross dropped LoCicero for a four count. Locicero should have taken the eight count because Hagler was ready to pounce and it didn't take Referee Curtis Thrasher long to jump in and save LoCicero from further punishment. When asked who he want's next Hagler had this to say "It doesn't matter as long as it's a title shot. There all scared of me they don't want to fight me". After this performance he maybe right.

The support bout had Michael Watson (17-1-1-14) facing John David Jackson (12-1-1-5) a rematch of a fight that ended in an eight round draw back in January. This fight may be the fight of the month. Thru five rounds I had Watson up by a point as both men took turns exchanging the first four rounds with both landing some heavy shots. In the sixth Jackson launced a right hand over a lazy Watson jab that rocked Watson and dropped him for a six count. Jackson landed some heavy blows on Watson after he rose but was unable to hurt him again. Watson stormed back in the seventh as easily won the round as Jackson was starting to wear down. Jackson stormed back to win the eighth and ninth rounds with some incredible combos to put him up by one point on my card. Going into the last round the fight was close and could be going either way. Jackson was having a great tenth round when a Watson uppercut dropped Jackson for a seven count. Watson did not have enough time to follow up on the knockdown but I'm sure the scoring was gonna be all over the place and I was right. 96-93 for Jackson, 95-94 for Watson and 96-93 for Michael Watson. I had it scored 95-94. These two make for exciting fights. Maybe they will meet again when both are in their primes.

On the undercard William"Caveman"Lee (9-1-0-7) won an impressive eight round unanimous decision over Jimmy Gillon (14-5-1-4) by scores of 78-71 across the board. Quincey Taylor (2-0-0-1) and Rafael Gutierrez (2-0-0-1) also scored four round unanimous decision victories. Gutierrez looked impressive scoring knockdowns in the first and fourth rounds but sustained a cut under his right eye that may keep him out of action for a few months. Taylor looked fantastic as two judges agreed scoring 40-37 for Taylor while the second judge may have been high scoring 39-37 for Davis.

Shoot Ric.............go ahead and enhance Boom-Boom's ratings to insure a Bramble beating. You'll hear no complaints from me if you do.
