How difficult is it to build a winner

How easy or tough do you think it is to build a consistent winner in OOTP? I would define consistent winner by getting a team to the point where they at least have a winning record every year for the most part.

For me I would say easy. If you play the game without any house rules making a team be a winner season after season is easy.

Even with house rules it can be extremely easy.

This is against the AI, of course. On-line leagues are different.

This might be OOTP's biggest problem. OF course there are a multitude of reason for this. Many of which are mentioned here:

Being a solo only player I couldn't agree more.

Another solo player here, I find myself starting lots of leagues. The challenge is starting with a bad team and building a strong organization (not just the major league team). After a couple of years though, once I like where my organization is, I find it way to easy to maintain the big league club a pennant contender year after year without exception. I then lose interest and start a new league. I can't remember the last time I had a league go 10+ years.

You wouldn't happen to be Bill Parcells, would you?

Simple solution: Join an online league.

Heh. Well, it was the first thing that struck me when I read your post.

BTW, I love the Cheif Wiggum quote in your Location.

It's simple but not necessarily the best. Online just doesn't work for me for several reasons. I enjoy the day to day management decisions and watching the phb. I also don't have the time to keep up with a regular online league schedule.

easier said than done. I've been looking for a good league to join where I can GM my Phillies, and the fact is, 1. there aren't that many really good leagues with high participation, and 2. There aren't that many good leagues with high participation where I can GM the Phillies. I also like making day to day decisions....just as a real GM does.

I ran a historical simulation recently from 1901-2007. I managed the Cubs and in those 107 seasons I only had 6 seasons below a .500 record. 23 seasons my winning percentage was .600+. I made the playoffs 70 times and won the World Series 28 times. I had financials off (no free agency), Retire According to History enabled, and built my team solely through the rookie draft. I never made a single trade in 107 seasons, although trading was enabled so that the CPU teams could trade with each other.

That's because, IMO, the best online leagues are fictional. MLB based leagues generally fail, but if they DO last long enough, they become fictional leagues anyway.

I'm learning the hard way how hard it's going to be to build a team from the ground up, eh Mike?

Also, that's not going to help the AI improve.
