PINSON HIGHLIGHTS WEAK 1983 HOF CANDIDATES
The list of first time players eligible for the 1983 HOB Hall of Fame ballot pales in comparison to past years. Cincinnati outfielder Vada Pinson may be the only player this year with a legitimate shot to be nominated on his first attempt. Here is a complete list of the first time eligible players. Their bios and career stats are listed below. Johnny Callsion OF Vada Pinson OF Tommy Harper OF Gaylord Perry P Jim Ray Hart 3B Barry Shetrone OF Art Mahaffey P In addition, the following players are also eligible. Their votes from last year are listed beside their names. A player needs to appear on 70% of the ballots cast to be inducted. Bios on each of the players below can be found here: http://www.ootpbb.com/board/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000037
Here is the info on all the first time nominees JOHNNY CALLISON The 1966 American League MVP, Callison played on 5 pennant winners with the White Sox in the 1960's.
VADA PINSON A key member of 5 World Series winning teams with Cincinnati, as of 1983 ranks 12th alltime in career hits.
TOMMY HARPER Does not appear to have the numbers necessary for induction, but it was a weak class so I had to have some eligible players on it. Harper won a World Series ring with the Reds in 1965. He was dealt to Houston for Jimmy Wynn the next season. As of 1983, Harper ranks 10th overall in alltime stolen bases.
GAYLORD PERRY Perry was injured both times the Giants made the postseason during his tenure with the club, including 1969 when they won it all. He no-hit the Mets in 1964, which was his best season - finishing 19-5. His older brother Jim was 124-137 over 18 seasons with Cleveland.
JIM RAY HART Scored the series clinching run in the 1969 World Series, the Giants first title since 1951 and only the second in franchise history.
BARRY SHETRONE Won 3 World Series rings and played on 5 pennant winners in his career.
ART MAHAFFEY Long time Phillies starter consistantly posted double digit win totals but his career pales in comparison to teammate Don Cardwell, who is also on this ballot.
A complete list of all current HOB Hall of Famers can be found here. http://www.ootpbb.com/board/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000006 The voting will remain open until I finish posting the complete 1983 season recap. Please cast your ballots. Thanks. [ January 06, 2002: Message edited by: Tiger Fan ]

My ballot
P Don Drysdale P Don Cardwell OF Orlando Cepeda OF Vada Pinson I dont think Drysdale and Cardwell were worthy of first time nominations but they do belong in the HOB Hall. Hard to bypass Cepeda with 600 career homers. Pinson is debatable as a first time nominee but I watched him come up big in a lot of playoff games with the Big Red Machine. His 5 World Series rings and 3200+ hits get him in this year in my book. Keep the ballots coming. Still a day or two left.
