Why is it that every year someone thinks that the umps are leaning toward one team?

It's baseball.

remember the NBA ref?

(not saying thats happening here, because while the umps have been pretty bad, it's been pretty standard bad nothing out of the ordinary mistakes umps make)

a basic replay system for some plays would help though.

Well just by chance, even if the umps weren't biased at all, one team would probably get more calls than the other. That's just how probability-based things work in small samples. If you had 10 coin flips, it wouldn't be too extraordinary to have 7 heads and 3 tails. So if there were 10 big calls that could have gone either way and 7 go to one team, the other team's fans will probably think it was on purpose, but it's probably just randomness.

Over the course of just a 7-game series, what would be extraordinary is if the distribution of calls was so even that fans of both teams thought the umps were perfectly fair.

A basic replay system for some plays would slow games down considerably. It would also be biased. How do you determine which plays are eligible for replay and which aren't?

Leave it as is, bad calls have a way of balancing out over time, and no matter what you implement, there will always be fans who complain that the umps gave them a bum call and cost them a game or the series.

Sometimes a bad call isn't the reason a team loses anyway. For example, last night the call at 3rd on Rollins. He was out, but Sonnanstine blew it by not taking the DP. It was a poor fielding decision, and the Phillies capitalized. Not saying that play decided the game, but it sure didn't help the Rays confidence as much as it did the Phillies.

The Phillies need Jack Bauer. They have no killer instinct!

I'll probably have a stroke if they delay this game. It can't be over soon enough. /Phils fan

its bad. raining very hard. which leads me to wonder...are there special rules in place for the post season? Or if it rains hard enough the umps could call the game after the top of the 5th and award the series to the Phils??
I mean, say it starts pouring and lightening. do they wait it out until 3am and resume play? or do they resume play tomorrow night? whether or not a game is called or delayed is the umpire's call correct?

If the game had not gone to the 5th inning, it could have been called and re-played. But now that it has gotten to the 5th inning, the option is to play it out no matter how many rain delays or end the game and make the Phillies World Champions. Kinda rough situation for everyone.

Looks like Hamels velocity is down a little. Wow...very inconsistent home plate umpire tonight.

yeah it looks bad but i'm on rabbit ears so i have a bit of shadow & fuzz. but this is crazy, I don't know how those hitters can see cery well, they should go into a delay.

I don't know what they would do, call it now or play it later?

maybe they should find Bud and ask him

edit: i don't remember ever seing them play a game in rain this hard.

The problem, as I understand it, is that the weather for tomorrow doesn't look to be any better in Philadelphia. So if they end up calling or suspending the game tonight, they'd have to play or finish it up tomorrow night, which is supposed to be a travel day. If the weather prevented a replay/finishing of the game tomorrow night, then the schedule for the rest of the series is thrown off. Television won't like that. (Actually, they probably don't like it as it is now, since last night's Game 3 was apparently the lowest rated World Series game ever.)

ok, that last shot of Upton stealing seals the deal for me. that field is unplayable. its mud. there's half an inch of water floating on top. this is madness.

Yeah, I think once the scored tied, they called the delay. I think they would have kept playing.

Yup, if it wasn't tied there is no way they stop it.

Only in Philadelphia. Wouldn't happen anywhere else.

Hamels is done for the Series.

I just can't help but feeling...advantage Tampa. Sigh.

It depends, if they can't finish the game tomorrow, then they will have to play on Wednesday, which should be game 6 in Tampa. If that happens, it probably pushes the series back, which leaves Hamels open to pitch again.

Really I think this is the best scenario for both teams (figuring in the rain). Because as much as the Phillies wanted it, they didn't want to win it by a called game in the last game of the World Series. The fans don't want that. MLB doesn't want that, and I know Tampa didn't want that.
