relocation/realignment: maybe I'm doing something wrong?

OK here is the situation:

In the WWBL we are making some changes that include relocating some teams and realignment of some other teams.

So after teh 2015 season we will make the changes, so in tests as we move to OOTP 9 I decided to test the relocation/realignment. I waited until the preseason (March in Game) then changed all team names and realigned the divisions. What I found was this effected the entire history of the league, for example Spokane moved to Dakota, so when I look at a retired player that played for spokane in 1999 he shows as having played for Dakota, which didn't have a team.

So am I doing something wrong or will moving a team affect the player cards for all players no matter when they played?

I'm pretty sure you need to do that sort of stuff in the OFFseason, not the preseason.

simming to "preseason begins" is when everything rests to 0 as far as standing and such so thats why I did it then, but that still would not have been what affected players from 1999

I always thought that history would be unaffected. I edited some abbreviations and whatnot (eliminating the cumbersome "Of Anaheim" from teh Angels for example). The changes I made took place from that day on, but the history was unchanged. Tampa Bay players (changed to TB) still played the previous year as TBA.

I was under the impression that this was standard and unfixable in the history files...hopefully Im wrong?
