This is where I stopped reading the article.

The New York Yankees do not creep into October on little cat's feet. They charge in, steamrolling piddling little teams like the Angels

Clearly, this writer knows nothing.

Still, I am willing to go through a season or two or three if that is what it takes to build a solid contender rather than a team full of Pavanos and Ponsons AND IGAWAS.

Agreed. I don't know if you can get Newsday in the Bronx, but I have to tell you that I am ashamed of Wallace Matthews as a sports columnist in the newspaper that i subscribe to. He's an ignorant, pandering man without insight and courage who says what he thinks his readers want to hear. I refuse to read his stuff anymore for that reason.

With the Blue Jays doing there bit to mess up the AL East standings and move within a game of the Yankees, could the unspeakable happen and a 4th place finish be on the cards? IIRC, you've always been 1st or 2nd since the AL went to E, C and W.

3rd would see the end of Girardi anyway, would there be even more fallout from a 4th place finish?

I bet Girardi stays through his contract.

Cashman can come back if he wants to come back.

The Steinbrenners seem to feel that this a result of injuries and poor performance.

I think the only thing guaranteed is Girardi will return to start next season.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about Cashman.

and excuse me for quoting myself.

Now that etiquette has been addressed, I would like to say that it appears the potential Pavano conundrum has been avoided (5.31 ERA after last night).

Good. I know Mussina pitched well this year, but I wouldn't mind them saying goodbye to him as well. Start fresh with Wang, Chamberlain, Hughes as your core and fill in the rest with either minor leaguers or a FA signing. I would rather them shy away from Sabathia as I think his contract will either equal or surpass Santana's.

Shouldn't this be renamed the New York Yankees 2008 OFF-Season Official Thread since their season is done (I hear angels singing )? As a Yankee-hater I just wanted to throw that in. And now I'm done, carry on.

14 years to come up with something and that's all you have?

As a Yankees fan, I'm disappointed with their results this year, but I can't say it wasn't expected, particularly with the injuries. Now I can start paying attention to football before November.

It's technically still a bit early, but this is the time of year when I feel released from my Yankees devotion to choose another team to root for from this point on.

This year, it's either Rays or Cubs. Best of all if they meet in the Series.

I'll be rooting for the Rays and anyone playing against the Red Sox . The Rays have to be the biggest surprise team in the MLB. It would be great to see them get to their first World Series in the same year as their first winning season.

Remember, don't feed the trolls

The biggest thing I'm disappointed with is the development of the kiddies. Chamberlain didn't get in enough innings, and Hughes/Cabrera/Kennedy imploded. I think we'll hear from Hughes again, but I have no idea what is going to happen with the other 2.

My congratulations to both Jeter and Rivera, for their great records in the final year of the Yankee Stadium.

Yes, I am a Red Sox fan, but it does not mean I do not respect the records of the players I truly respect no matter what uniform they are wearing.

So, here is my congratulations to the Yankees fans here.

Markus, you did remember to remove the code that made OOTP inoperative in the unlikely event of the Yankees not making the playoffs - I know at the time of OOTP1, the whole idea had no credence, but I fear it may strike in the next couple of days...

Thanks, myasu. Don't forget A-Rod this week becoming the only player in major league history to hit 35 home runs and 100 RBI's in 12 seasons, breaking his tie with Ruth. Not being a career Yankee, Rodriguez's record brings me less satisfaction than Jeter's (most career hits in Yankee Stadium) and Rivera's (actually, Rivera only moved into #2 position in career saves - now if only Hoffman would retire so Rivera can pass him!), yet A-Rod's achievement is certainly more significant and historic.

Yes, I am aware of the A-Rod record, and I think it is a hell of a record.

When I think of Jeter, I think of his great diving catch attempt @ the red sox game, or his unbelievable relay throw to the home @ the A's game. Those plays just give you chills, even if you are rooting for the opponent teams, you know.
When I think of Rivera, I think of his great playoff records, and I think of that feeling I had whenever I saw him in the big Yankees VS Sox games.
He was simply unhittable, and I just had to hope for him to somehow get hurt before his first pitch on the mound...

When I think of A-Rod, I think of, I think of.... his infamous "slap on the glove" in 2004 ALCS, or think of his wife wearing stupid T-shirt, or think of him yelling "I got it!" while he is running the bases with the ball up in the air.

I do not dislike him as I dislike Bonds, and I think he IS one of the best hitters ever to play the game already, but I think I need to see him do something big to make his team win a championship, to finally "respect" him as much as I respect Jeter or Rivera.
