Jack Eagan - 1904 Olympics
Jack Eagan
Full name: Jack Eagan Real name : Frank Joseph Floyd Gender: Male Weight: 132 lbs (60 kg) Born: May 27, 1878 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States "Egan won two medals in boxing at the 1904 Summer Olympics, a silver medal in the lightweight category losing to Harry Spanger in the final and a tied bronze medal in the welterweight category against fellow American boxer, Joseph Lydon. By the rules of the AAU it was illegal to fight under an assumed name. In November 1905 the AAU disqualified Egan from all AAU competitions and he had to return all his prizes including his two Olympics medals." Richard Gunn -1908 Olympics
Richard Gunn (England)
FW Full name: Richard Gunn Gender: Male Born: February 16, 1871 in Charing Cross, Greater London, England, Great Britain Died: June 23, 1961 in Lambeth, Greater London, England, Great Britain At the age of 37 years and 254 days Richard Gunn is the oldest ever winner of an Olympic boxing title. In the 1908 Olympic featherweight final, Gunn met Charley Morris of the Polytechnic BC and completely out-boxed his younger opponent in the first round for Morris to come back and take the second. The rules of the 1908 tournament for the third round to last an extra minute and many thought that the veteran Gunn would be hard pressed to survive a final round of four minutes. However, he drew on his vast experience and the ultimate verdict was never in doubt. After joining his father’s East End tailoring business, Richard Gunn took up boxing in 1893 at the Surrey Commercial Docks BC and, after winning the ABA championship in 1894, 1895 and 1896 he retired at the request of the authorities because of his “acknowledged superiority over all comers”. He then served on the ABA council until 1908 when 14 years after winning his first ABA title, he came out of retirement to win the Olympic title. |

Fred Grace - 1908 Olympics
Fred Grace (England)
LW Full name: Frederick "Fred" Grace Born: February 29, 1884 in Edmonton, Greater London, England, Great Britain Died: July 23, 1964 in Ilford, Greater London, England, Great Britain Fred Grace of Elton Mission BC was one of the less fancied competitors in the 1908 British Olympic boxing team. He had never won a major title and he was, by his own admission, woefully short of training. However, in the quarter-finals he scored an outstanding win over Matt Wells, who later became the British and European professional champion. In the final Grace met Fred Spiller of Gainsford AC when, after an even first round and both boxers going down in the second round, the superior skills of Grace eventually ensured a comfortable victory. Fred Grace went on to win four ABA lightweight titles between 1909 and 1920 but as boxing was illegal in Sweden in 1912 he was denied the opportunity of defending his Olympic title when at his peak. He did made a second Olympic appearance in 1920 but they then he was 36 years old and after beating a Dutchman in his first bout he lost to the eventual winner, Sammy Mosberg of America. Grace retired from his business as a heating and ventilating engineer in 1949 and while out walking one day was struck by a car, receiving injuries which proved fatal. |

Albert Oldman - 1908 Olympics
Albert Oldman (England)
HW Full name: Albert Leonard Oldman Born: November 18, 1883 Albert Oldman, a City of London policeman who had earlier served in the Horse Guards, qualified for the final of the heavyweight division at the 1908 Olympics with a quick KO over Ian Myrams of Manchester followed by a bye in the semi-finals. In the final, Oldman faced Syd Evans of Reading, the current ABA champion, but unfortunately Evans had injured his shoulder in an earlier round and was no match for the aggressive policeman. Oldman won by a KO within two minutes and took the gold medal after fighting for a total of less than one round throughout the entire competition. In 1910, he left England to join the Ceylon police. |
