Player development is broken! Please fix!

I can't even remember how my times I have brought this up but it still doesn't seem to be fixed. I even brought it up when I was a beta tester to no avail.

Markus, you really need to acknowledge that player development is broken and fix this issue because the game is crippled until you do.

The issue I'm referring to is how top prospects, who tear up the minors and perform well in the bigs, suddenly drop in potential and end up riding the bench the rest of their careers. And the sudden drop I'm talking about is over a week, not a season or two. This is not realistic at all. In the league I'm in, during this last sim, two players on my team went from top prospects with tons of potential to mediocre players. Same thing happened to more GM's of other teams, all in the same sim. There is no rhyme or reason for these drops and something needs to be done.

I honestly hope that someone on the development team acknowledges this issue and gets it fixed because at this point there is no reason to draft or trade for prospects.

Thanks.

I would agree that development is one of the biggest flaws in the game, but it seems people are more interested in women's leagues and Saudi Arabian albino minor league feeder leagues than this stuff.

A lot of us are upset over the fact that the game prioritizes quirks and ridiculous foreign leagues over having a first-class MLB simulator and focusing on real baseball.

As a short-term fix (i.e. until development is improved) couldn't you decrease the talent randomness?

I'm not interested in an MLB simulator. I wouldn't be playing this game if that's all it was.

A lot of us are happy that OOTP can simulate vast and wide-ranging baseball universes instead of pigeonholing itself by hard-coding in every bit of minutia that currently defines American major league baseball.

I tried that but it doesn't seem to have much affect.

Player development isn't minutia and should be a much higher priority than foreign leagues.

You're fighting the wrong battle. It's not about US leagues vs. Ghana leagues. It's about the game's ability to model human beings. Unless you're trying to run leagues of dragons and elephants, pretty much all OOTP players are impacted by the results engine and the development engine. It would be better if OOTP owners stopped picking at each other, and instead got together to hold the game to a higher standard in both of these areas.

Yep. I have very little interest in running an MLB league but realistic and accurate player development is something that everyone should care about because it affects every league that you would want to run.

At the risk of some serious flaming, I'm going to put my oar in here and ask whether this really is something that is "broken." I am not at all bothered by the fact that sometimes a player starts out with a bang and suddenly declines, preferably after signing a big multi-year contract, of course! . This happens in real life (e.g. Bill Hall of the Brewers for a good curent example) and I don't see why it shouldn't also happen in the game.
There is a danger when we try to generalize from our personal and anecdotal experiences to the game as a whole. The reason why RonCo's criticism of the player development model has to be taken more seriously is that it is based on a far broader sample of players.

EDIT: I do agree that it would be better for the drop to happen not as suddenly as it sometimes does! But I have only rarely seen it happen in the way you describe.

Yes, it really is broken, and RonCo has pretty much proven it.

We've got sounds though!!!1

I 100% agree that there should be players that just drop in potential but the current frequency and suddenness at which it happens is not realistic at all. We're talking about a few days here, not a season or two. And it's happening to multiple players across the league and all at the same time. It's just not realistic.

It's actually getting worse and worse with each version that is released.

Someone in this thread has some sense at last.

You have sort of a point, but until OOTP stops catering to quirks, freaks, and The West Nigerian Really Almost Baseball League players out there, basic issues like player developement will never be fixed.

Those two points are related. Every time focus gets taken off of the simulator so that time and resources can be spent on quirks, the game and its players suffer for it.

Yeah, dragons always flame out in my leagues too. I gave up on them years ago.
