New User with a number of questions

I recently jumped to OOTP from baseball mogul and I absolutely love the change. I've been only playing for a week now but I have some questions that hopefully a generous veteran can answer.
  • The game seems to take up a lot of memory, even closing everything by itself it sometimes freezes. I recently stopped saving game replays and box scores but it is still going slow. I am on Windows XP.
  • I get a lot of my sims interrupted by players on DFA and I have no idea how they end up there. So I constantly have to assign a guy to a team. Is there a place for the rules on this or is there a default setting that causes problems?
  • Injuries, even with a top trainer I seem to get a lot of them. Is there anyway to tone this down?
  • After reading a number of posts it seems that scouting is not really the best, does everyone just use past stats to project future ability?
  • My biggest issue is that even after turning off most notices and not saving files it takes me over an hour just to sim one season. Is there an optimal setting so I could get through a season quicker?

For question 3 on injuries, you can adjust that on the Game Setup -> Global Setup, then a short way down on the left side there is a menu with 5 levels of injury frequency. I believe the injury frequency is pretty consistent with modern MLB, though I have no stats to verify. But I think someone started a thread along these lines that you can probably find if you look around a little.

As for question 4, there is debate between people who want correct info from their scouts vs those who enjoy the challenge of scouts who make mistakes. That thread is http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...velopment.html if you want to see what a few people have said. There are probably others on this topic as well, that's just the one I've seen recently.

Hope this helps a little.

If you don't have much memory or HD space on your computer then this kind of problem will exist. I have 2gb of memory and a ton of HD space left over and it doesn't take me that long to sim a season although that is not a bad number for simming a season. There are other factors in how you set up your game which also could cause a slowdown in simming a season. If I sim a season, I do it on a month to month basis so I can see how the games are going and see if I need to change anything in my set up. So, in short, there are a lot of factors in determining how long it takes to sim a full season.
I am using XP, by the way. I did have the sim on a Vista machine and the sim ran much slower on it that it does XP because Vista uses so much more memory with all the junk it has on it. There are ways to get more memory available for games but it would take a long time to explain to you how to do that, so I won't try. There are some pretty good explanations of how to do this if you go to some of the tech sites on the web.

Anyway, I hope you get the machine to run like you want it. Good luck!

Here's a thread from the FAQ board:

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...auto-play.html

Regarding DFA, you should not be interrrupted by such transactions from teams controlled by the AI. If they are transactions from team(s) that you control, then you either delegated to your own AI* or you initiated them by waiving players, etc. You have to resolve these situations yourself.**

*The only situation that I can think of offhand in which the AI would make a move and it would be up to you to finish the transaction by addressing your own DFA list would be if you delegated Roster Moves to your AI manager (including demotions) and kept Transactions (including releases) to yourself. In order to be demoted, some players need to be waived and DFA'd.

** I vaguely recollect some problem with the MLB quickstart game, something about players on DFA in the beginning. If so, make sure you are patched up to 9.1.2 or 9.1.6 and you have downloaded the full patch, not just the program executable.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help, one other question:

Is there any easy way to see how I acquired a player. I am at the point now where I have a ton of young talent producing and I want to know if I traded for them or if they were already in the system. Plus, if I traded for them what the trade was.

Well the obvious question is, are you controlling your own team, or are you "acting as"? If you are controlling your own team you should know who you traded for.

Acquired players who are not MLB ready will go directly to the level they occupied before (or they will be promoted, if ready). MLB ready players and those who are out of options will go to DFA, waiting for your decision.

For a specific player, look at the bottom of his BNN page, which you can reach from a tab when you bring up a player. You can also get a team log by going to the team's Transactions tab, and then Transaction Log.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but you should be able to click on the player's name and then select the History tab. It will list who drafted the player as the first line. If the player was traded then it will list who the trade was with and what players were involved.

Semi-related to this is the History & News tab for your team. If you click the Draft History, it will show all of the players your team has drafted.

Also for your league, under the History, select a subleague (AL or NL) for any year and then Drafted Players. It will show all the draft selections for the year and their accumulated stats. If a player has made the majors, they will be shown in a different color and only their major league stats will be shown. I changed the styles.css file in news/html folder to show players in red if they have made the majors - it makes it a bit easier for me.

This would be nice--which line do you change?

I'm pretty sure it was just these:
Code:
a.a1:link	{ text-decoration:none; font-weight:normal; color:#EC1D23; }
a.a1:visited 	{ text-decoration:none; font-weight:normal; color:#EC1D23; }
a.a1:hover 	{ text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal; color:#FF0000; }
a.a1:active 	{ text-decoration:none; font-weight:normal; color:#EC1D23; }
a.a1:focus 	{ text-decoration:none; font-weight:normal; color:#EC1D23; }
The EC1D23 color replaced 222299.
