I just happened to stay up later than normal and caught this race. What a tremendous race and an absolutely stunning finish.

Watching it again, I just realized they set the world record by 4 seconds. That is unheard of.

Yeah...now that I have had almost 24 hours to digest what I saw last night...I am realizing how fortunate I was to have witnessed such an epic Olympic moment.

More Phelps time tonight as he goes for #3. The 4x200 freestyle relay team will also try to qualify for another showdown tomorrow with the Frenchies.

Anyone excited for Phelps next race tonight? Can't wait to see it. Also enjoying the men's gymnastics right now.

Those last two guys on the rings were just insane. That's the thing about that event, just being able to do it astounds me. We can all for the most part run or swim, but 99.9% of us could do nothing but hang on those things and twist in the wind.

Okay, I don't get this screwed up scoring system. Two Americans compete flawlessly with very difficult routines and completely stick the landing on the high bar and can't crack higher than 15.7, yet this Xiaoping Li does a hugely difficult vault, doesn't stick the landing and takes a huge step backward, and he gets a 16.775? That's a joke.

Vault has a different scoring system. Those scores were for the events, which are not normalized across them. NBC explained it.

Meh. I preferred the old scoring system.

I'd rather see a difficult set with no mistakes than a very difficult set with a few mistakes. With this new system, that very difficult set is at a huge advantage.

I agree that the old system is better but definitely needs tweaks. That or the new system needs tweaks back to something more similar to the old system.

Talk about clutch. Artemev sits on the pine all day, watches his 2 teammates choke...then delivers the goods to clinch the bronze for the USA...good stuff.

Watching Coughlin's butterfly stroke after watching Phelps' is like seeing a grade school recital after a London Philharmonic performance.

I don't like this scoring system. OK, so you can get 16+ on one aparatus, but it's not possible on another aparatus. If they are not normalized across the board, you pretty much have a rigged system.

IMHO, everyone should start at zero. Than certain moves are worth X number of points. Only these moves would count in the score. The only issue there is if a gymnast has a new move, that has not been assigned a point value. But, I think you could find a way to work that out. Than rather than take off points for the mistake, you just either give zero for not finishing the move or give 1/4-3/4 credit (keeping it the same for all). Every gymnast gets X amount of time to perform.

Man do I hate these commentators though. "Oh that's going to be a deduction." -- The problem is that judges probably have that same mindset and they watch more for screw ups than anything else. And, that guy watching the routine on the replay computer (total BS -- unless you're going to do a slow-mo on ALL routines, which is impossible).

That wasn't any different under the old system. It was also possible to do a routine/vault that literally couldn't be a perfect 10 because of difficulty.

The only thing the new system did was split the elements so that it wasn't the same set of judges looking for both execution and impression.
