Help! Just got the game and want to create historical league

Just got the game yesterday and I want to create a league made of my favorite historical teams. For example, if I want a league of teams like the '27 Yankees, 86 Red Sox, '69 Mets, etc....what do I do? I looked at the videos but I'm overwhelmed by all the options.

1. I need to know exactly which steps to take to start such a league. If there's already something very detailed somewhere on this site, that's even better.

2. I don't even know from WHERE to download such teams.

3. I want to control everything.

4. I want to be able to have accurate player photos/team decals, and be able to edit players on these teams once they're set up.

Also,

I'd like to know how to create a league made up of 18 or 20 or 24 teams....my choice, consisting of players I put on them from different years. So let's say team #1 takes Babe Ruth 1921, team #2 takes Barry Bonds 2002, etc.

How do I go about setting that up....step by step?

OOTP 8 and 9 come with the Lahman historical database. This thread is still accurate, even though it's from last year, about importing historical teams into a custom league:

Regarding controlling everything, there is a setting in League Setup, Functions, called "Set All Teams To Being Controlled By [your human manager identity]."

It helps to play in Commissioner Mode (Manager Options) to do things like editing players. When you go into that mode, you will notice an Editor tab appears on every Player Profile page.
