Jersey Joe Walcoott defeated Ezzard Charles in the initial elimination tournament, but was only successful in one title defense before suffering a first round TKO by Marciano. The 'Rock" has a perfect 18-0-0 (18) through 6/53.
Number one contender Jersey Joe is hoping for one more chance at the title before retiring at the end of the year.
We will leave the HW scene thru June and proceed on to the MW's next.

There has been significant progress made in my universe and developments will be reported thru the "UBC Dispatch"

Heavyweights:
As previously reported Marciano has ruled the division thru the first six months of 1953. Jersey Joe and Rex Layne will face each other in August with the winner getting a title shot in October.Walcott has indicated either way he will retire after this year.
Newcomers Patterson, Johansson and LaStarza, all highly ranked by the UBC promise to add lustre to the division.

Lightheavy weights:
Champ Archie Moore successfully defended his title in March and June against Harold Johnson and Harry Mathews respecively. Mathews had Moore in trouble with cuts and eye swelling and appeared on the way to taking the title when Moore KO'ed him in the 6th round. Moore started the year on an ominous note by losing a non-title bout to Dan Bucceroni on the 2nd round DQ.
(Moore had some not so kind words for Andreas for instituting new DQ rules).

Middleweights:
After successfully definding his title twice against Carl "Bobo" Olsen (first bout a draw) Ray Robinson lost his title to upstart Joey Giardello via a 15 round split decision. Giardello, winner of the Merry March tourney (similar to ESPN's tourneys back in the 80's) earned the chance. He didn't hold the belt long as he was decisioned by new champ Jake LaMotta in his first title defense. This division seems to offer a lot of surprises in the next six month period. A final note, Ray Robinson followed up his title loss by losing a tune-up by TKO to lowly rated Otis Woodward. He'll need to campaign more successfully for the next six months to get back into the thick of things.

The next "Dispatch" will cover the three remaining divisions(WW, LW and FW) for the period January-July 1953. Until then, remember to buy those Gillette razor blades.

THE UBC DISPATCH
The UBC has made some modifications to their schedule due to time constraints caused by patch updates, grabbing additional fighters and photo downloads. We are proceeding with the HW's while the other divisions are "time frozen" in June 1953.
Though July, 1954 Rocky Marciano remains champion with a 24-0 record with 24 KO's. The boy is simply dominating every challenger and figures to do so until he retires at the end of 55. Since the last edition of the DISPATCH the "Rock" compiled the following title defenses:
Marciano TKO-6 Joe Walcott (10/1/53)
Marciano KO-2 Roland LaStarza (3/1/54)
Marciano TKO-4 Floyd Patterson (6/1/54)

Young Floyd Patterson is a little ahead of his time, but he had managed to compile a 13-0 record before the fight and was entitled to a title bout, but alas, in July he ran afoul of LaStarza in a battle of 1-2 contenders suffering a 7 round KO while leading on all score cards. With his victory LaStarza earned another crack at Marciano's title later this year.(Lucky him!)

Other Items of note:
Sonny Liston is looming on the horizon and with a 9-0 (7) record should be in the thick of things by this time next year.

Both Jack Gardner and Ezzard Charles are on 12-bout winning streaks that have kept them in contention. Gardner is hoping for a title shot, possibly after Marciano's planned retirement, while Charles lost his only title appearance when losing to Walcott in the first elimination bout back in January 1950.

Notable Retirees:
Lee Q. Murray -15-7-0 (10)
Jersey Joe Walcott - 12-4-0 (4)
Omelio Agramonte - 10-8-1 (5)
Tommy Farr - 15-6-0 (2)

As evidenced by the below rankings the UBC is not immune to "outside influences". Everyone is wondering what the H**l Wilm Snoek is doing among the contenders?

UBC Rankings as of July, 1953
1 Roland LaStarza 17-1-0 (7)
2 Floyd Patterson 13-1-0 (7)
3 Clarence Henry 20-6-0 (10)
4 Ezzard Charles 19-4-0 (13)
5 Jack Gardner 16-3-0 (14)
6 Embrel Davidson 9-5-0 (8)
7 Ingermar Johansson14-2-0 (11)
8 Cleveland Williams 16-4-1 (14)
9 Johnny Summerlin 15-3-0 (11)
10 Wilm Snoek 8-11-1 (0)

UBC DISPATCH - JULY, 1955

All of UBC-dom was shocked by Liston's June TKO victory over the reigning champ Marciano. "The Rock" (who will retire at the end of this year) had hoped to go out undefeated, but alas, it was not to be. The UBC has waived the usual requirements for Liston's first title defense by allowing Marciano an October rematch in what will be his last fight in the UBC. Liston's camp was not too happy to hear this news as a loss would throw Liston back into the pool of contenders in an elimination touney should Marciano regain the title prior to his retirement. Obviously, Liston and group are afraid of Marciano.

In other news, young Pat McMurtry has won the hearts of UBC fans by moving into the number 3 spot in the rankings. Many feel he is in way over his head, but does have a win over Ingemar Johanssen under his belt.

Among the contenders, Patterson (6-0), Williams (4-0), and Davidson (5-1) continue as strong contenders.

Many of the fans have already purchased their tickets for the August match-up between La Starza and young McMurtry with LaStarza figuring to be a heavy favorite.

Here's the July, 1955 rankings:
P.S.-Note that last month's pretender Wilm Snoek has faded into oblivion, replaced by equally inept Earl Walls. Say goodbye to Earl as he undoubtedly will follow Snoek.

July, 1955
Rank Name Record

Ch. Sonny Liston 12-0-0 (11)

1 Rocky Marciano 28-1-0 (28)
2 Roland LaStarza 23-4-1 (8)
3 Pat McMurtry 7-2-1 (5)
4 Embrel Davidson 14-6-0 (12)
5 Floyd Patterson 19-3-0 (10)
6 Cleveland Williams 21-4-1 (18)
7 Jack Gardner 20-3-0 (18)
8 Cleveland Williams 17-11-0 (14)
9 Ezzard Charles 22-5-0 (13)
10 Earl Walls 9-6-0 (4)

Erick:
Tough question, I guess one could make a case for Floyd Patterson inasmuch as he was the reigning champ throughout this period, losing only to Johansson and then avenging the loss with two victories. The 55-60 period was not a particularly dominant period for the HW's. In my universe Liston appears ready to dominate for the foreseeable future (55-60) but anything can happen.

Glad you're following along, I thought I not only was talking to myself but writing to myself also.

I've been kinda excited about this McMurtry guy and was thinking that it might be a lot of fun to pick out a fighter who is in the middle of the ratings and manage and train him while hoping to get him a title shot. The auto-schedule could handle the rest of the fighters while you handle everything for just one. I know this is the role-playing feature that is coming but it could be done now without all the bells and whistles of purses, expenses etc.

Anway, I hope I addressed your question and stay tuned for a special edition of the "UBC Dispatch"

Roy.

UBC DISPATCH Special Edition

Big doin's in the UBC since the July "Dispatch"

August:
After a July vicory over Willy Besmanoff Pat MCMurtry (a darling of UBC fans) took on top ranked contender Roland LaStarza (more on him later) and gave LaStarza all he could handle before losing a 10 round majority decision. The loss drops McMurtry's record to 8-3-1 (6) which includes 2 losses to LaStarza. Pat will take on tough Cleveland Williams 24-4-1 (18) in December.

October:
Now for the big news-- Marciano regained title with a KO-4 victory over Liston who was pitching a shutout over the first three rounds. Suddenly in the fourth Marciano came alive and landed punch after punch threatening to TKO Liston when a big left hook put Sonny down for the count. As promised, Marciano will now retire as champion with a UBC record of 29-1-0 (29).
An elimination bout for the belt between LaStarza and Liston has been scheduled for next March.

Special Feature
Since this an extra edition of the "Dispatch" two fighters will be highlighted. First, Roland LaStarza, who we thought might be a tad overrated in the sim considering his UBC record of 24-4-1 (8). However, a check of his R/L record reveals he was 53-3-0 (24) at one point before fighting Marciano for the title, losing, and then hitting the skids and winding up at 57-9-0 (27). In the UBC LaStarza's 24 wins is second only to Marciano's 20. La Starza will retire after the March fight with Liston, because in real life he fought rarely and with long lay-offs in-between after 1955.

Another Bronx native to be highlighted(?) is Tony Esperti who because of his 2-25-2 (1) record is the bottom ranked fighter in the UBC. His 25 losses is the most in the UBC and considering he will be around until 1961 might hit triple figures in losses. His two wins came in two of the November tourneys which feature all the lowest ranked fighters and basically represents club fights.

After the December fight cards which pit the top 10 vs the 11-20 ranked fighters, the "Dispatch" will return and give highlights of the December fights, detail year-end rankings and perhaps a linear chart of the HW title fights so far in UBC history.

UBC Dispatch (December 1955)

Since our last "Dispatch" we have concluded the last few months of 1955. Sadly, several contenders have retired and left room for some younger faces in 1956. The champ, as previously reported, has packed it in along with Earl Walls, the number 5 contender. Since Liston has ascended to title bouts at an early age, beginning in 1956 (after the Liston-LaStarza title bout in March)the UBC has revised it's rules and will eliminate any fighter with less than 15 fights from participating in a title bout. While this will anger the other weight divisions who are frozen in 1953, it will present a more realistic simulation over all.

Below are the year end ratings:

December, 1955
Rank Name Record

Rocky Marciano 29-1-0 (29)

1 Sonny Liston 12-1-0 (11)
2 Pat McMurtry 9-3-1 (6)
3 Roland LaStarza 24-4-1 (8)
4 Embrel Davidson 14-6-1 (12)
5 Earl Walls 11-6-0 (5)
6 Rex Layne 19-11-0 (15)
7 Floyd Patterson 19-3-0 (10)
8 Cleveland Williams 21-4-1 (18)
9 Jack Gardner 20-3-0 (18)
10 Ezzard Charles 22-5-0 (13)

RETIREES:
Rocky Marciano 29-1-0 (29)
Clarence Henry 21-6-0 (10)
Earl Walls 11-6-0 (5)

As mentioned last edition here is lineal chart of HW champs:

2/7/1950 Jersey Joe Walcott KO-7 Tommy Farr New York, NY

UBC Dispatch
Interim edition covering the first quarter of 1956

Some interesting doin's during the period January thru March. First off, Sonny Liston regained the title in February with a 15 round decision over Roland LaStarza despite the fact that Liston was floored twice to LaStarza's one trip to the canvas. LaStarza out-punched Liston almost 2 to 1 in all punch categories. Roland fumed out of the ring vowing never to return to a UBC bout and immediately announced his retirement which everyone was expecting anyway.
Despite a gaudy rating, Liston remains a very suspect champ.

Among the other contenders, UBC favorite Pat McMurry, after squeaking out a close MD over tough Brian London in December proceeded to post a perfect 3-0 record for 1956 with decisions over DeJohn and Hunter along with a KO-8 win over Robert Eugene. Mc Murtry advances to 12-3-1.

Embrel Davidson started the year out all wrong with a loss (ko-8) to Johnny Arthur in Hamburg, but followed that with a TKO-10 win over Howard King. Davidson's record stands at 15-7-1 (13)

Floyd Patterson split his four bouts this year combining two KO wins over Alex Miteff with KO losses to Johnny Arthur and Garvin Sawyer who entered the ring with a 3-4-1 record. Patterson stands at 21-5-0 (12)

The busy Johnny Arthur, not suprisingly moved into serious contention with wins over Chuvalo, Davidson, Whitehurst, Patterson and Sawyer to move his mark to 20-9-0 (14) which is good for a #5 ranking as of April 1. It appears at this writing that Arthur will not get the next crack at Liston in June as Rex Layne 20-11-0 (16) is next in line. It should be a heavy hitting affair.

Until then.....

UBC Dispatch - July 1956

Since there was an interim report just a few months ago there is not too much to report except the title bout pitting champ Liston against the #1 contender Rex Layne. Liston, the heavy favorite, pounded on Layne from the opening bell, opening a gash in the first round. The bout was mercifully stopped by ref Arthur Mercante in the fourth giving Liston his second successful defense of the title.

Below are the official UBC rankings as of July. Note that due to several reitirements there are several new faces in the rankings:

July, 1956
Rank Name Record

Sonny Liston 16-2-0(14)

1 Rex Layne 20-13-0 (16)
2 Pat McMurtry 13-3-1 (8)
3 Embrel Davidson 15-7-1 (14)
4 Floyd Patterson 22-5-0 (12)
5 Ezzard Charles 25-5-0 (16)
6 Johnny Arthur 21-9-0 (15)
7 Jack Gardner 23-3-0 (20)
8 Cleveland Williams 23-5-1 (19)
9 Johnny Summerlin 20-6-0 (14)
10 Franco Cavicchi 14-9-4 (8)

RETIREES:
Roland LaStarza 27-6-1(9)

Upcoming big events include an August bout between McMurtry and Davidson followed by an October Title bout between Liston and old favorite Ezzard Charles who fought in and lost the original title bout vs. Walcott back in 1950. The oddsmakers give him little chance against the "Bear", but Charles had been hanging in there through the years and can't be dismissed.

December should feature a number of excellent fights as the top 10 contenders take on the contenders rated 11-20. This annual series has always produced exciting face-offs.

Until next time......

UBC Dispatch December 1956

As reported in the last Dispatch there was lots of action during the second half of 1956. McMurtry and Davidson travelled to London for their match. The crowd was barely in their seats when Davidson drove a right to the ribs that crumbled McMurtry and just like that it was over. Mc Murtry regained his former ranking by winning the next three in a row while Davidson lost his last bout to the middle of the road "Hurricane" Jackson to drop back a few spots.

The October title fight ended badly for challenger Ezzard Charles, who Liston dispatched with a 9th round TKO. Charles who iin real life would fight only 4 times after 1956 will be retired now joining Rex Layne and Jack Gardner as retirees with winning records.

Noteworthy fights during December:

Gardner w-10 Cavicchi
Arthur tko-4 Bethea
Johansson tko-5 Layne
Jackson w-10 Davidson (Big upset)
Charles w-10 Vargas (Vargas had won 4 straight)
Machen w-10 Whitehurst (Machen advances to 7-1-0 (3)
Chuval ko-3 Patterson (Chuvalo comes in overweight but scores upset)
Summerlin ko-1 Williams (Mild upset)
McMurtry ko-7 Cockell (Cockell takes fight on short notice)
Lincoln tko-2 London (Amos now 7-2-0 may be someone to watch)

Displeased with the way the rankings were appearing on the Titles page which put some undeserving fighters into the top ten, "THE GRAND HIGH EXALTED MYSTIC COMMISSIONER" has stepped in and put in his input into the rankings that will be used in the future.

Here's the rankings for the end of 1956:

December, 1956
Rank Name Record

Sonny Liston 17-2-0 (15)

1 Jack Gardner 24-3-0 (20)
2 Pat McMurtry 16-4-1 (10)
3 Ingemar Johansson 21-5-0 (18)
4 Ezzard Charles 26-6-0 (16)
5 Cleveland Williams 23--6-1 (19)
6 Floyd Patterson 22-6-0 (12)
7 Johnny Summerlin 21-6-0 (15)
8 Embrel Davidson 17-8-1 (15)
9 Johnny Arthur 23-9-0 (16)
10 Rex Layne 21-14-0 (16)

RETIREES
Rex Layne 21-14-0 (16)
Jack Gardner 24-3-0 (20)
Ezzard Charles 26-6-0 (16)

With three of the top 10 retiring, there should be lots of movement in the coming year. While undecided at the present time the UBC might give the heavies a break and allow at least one of the other divisions to catch-up time wise probably MW's.

Until next time -----

UBC DISPATCH
July, 1957

As noted below Johansson moved into the top contender spot by virture of his five victories since December. Johansson won the European HW crown via a single elimination tourney. The tourney was possible due to an influx of '60's fighters supplied by Rocco.

Number 2 contender McMurtry realized a dream that never happened in real life when he got a title shot in June. Heavy favorite Liston scored a 6th round KO in this his third title defense.

Cleveland Williams moved into the third slot by winning four bouts during the six month period.

Zora Folley moved into contention by winning 5 out of 6, losing only to Chuvalo on a first round KO.

Johnny Summerlin moved up a notch since December despite splitting four matches, but being in post-prime will probably start slipping with the newcomers Machen and Lincoln right behind him.

Here's the new ratings:

July, 1957
Rank Name Record

Sonny Liston 21-2-0 (19)

1 Ingemar Johansson 28-5-0 (24)
2 Pat McMurtry 20-5-1 (11)
3 Cleveland Williams 27-6-1 (23)
4 Floyd Patterson 28-6-0 (15)
5 Zora Folley 18-7-1 (7)
6 Johnny Summerlin 23-8-0 (16)
7 Johnny Arthur 27-10-0 (19)
8 Eddie Machen 10-1-0 (4)
9 Embrel Davidson 19-9-1 (17)
10 Amos Lincoln 8-2-0 (4)

Big fights coming up will feature McMurtry vs. Williams in August while Liston will defend against Johannson in October. Of course, December will feature our annual 1-10 vs 11-20 festival which always provides exciting fights.

By the way. old friend Tony Esperti with 34 losses is followed closely by Ernie Cab with 31 for the dubious honor of most losses. As shown above Patterson and Johansson are tied for the most victories with 28.

Until next time......

After a serious time-loss due to trying out some recently posted universe ideas, the UBC Dispatch is back in business. The Board of Directors (me) has decided to institute Mr. Cubedrum's fight scheduling ideas effective Jan 1, 1958. Since the UBC is our first universe we are sort of building this airplane while in flight. This new fight scheduling will allow us to announce all of the next month's fights and well as previous month's results. But first let's review happenings since July, 1957.

Pat McMurtry KO-1'ed Cleveland Williams, but because of Ezzard Charles' retirement Williams didn't lose any ground in the rankings. Young Eddie Machen, looking like a comer, debuts in the top ten with a 11-1-0 record. Mike DeJohn makes his first appearance, but it is felt that it will be a short-lived ranking.

Sonny Liston continued his hold on the Championship with a TKO-4 win over Ingemar Johansson.

Some interesting stats include Johansson with 25 and Williams with 24 as KO leaders, while Esperti leads Cab 36-33 for the most losses.

Below is the rankings and significant retirees.

December, 1957

Rank Name Record

Sonny Liston 22-2-0 (20)

1 Pat McMurtry 23-5-1 (14)
2 Ingemar Johansson 29-6-0 (25)
3 Cleveland Williams 29-7-1 (24)
4 Floyd Patterson 28-7-0 (15)
5 Johnny Summerlin 23-8-0 (16)
6 Zora Folley 20-7-1 (8)
7 Johnny Arthur 28-10-0 (20)
8 Embrel Davidson 21-9-1 (19)
9 Eddie Machon 11-1-0 (4)
10 Mike DeJohn 16-14-0 (12)

Retirees
Johnny Arthur 28-10-0 (20)
Embrel Davidson 21-9-1 (19)
John Holman 22-19-1 (8)

The UBC has experienced a serious time-loss due to experimenting with other universe ideas, but we're back.

The Board of Directors (me) have decided to adopt Mr. Cubedrum's method of scheduling fights effective January 1958.

Since July here are some of the significant happenings:

Sonny Liston TKO'ed-4 Ingemar Johansson to retain the title. UBC darling Pat McMurtry KO'ed-1 Cleveland Williams and up and coming Eddie Machen and veteran Mike DeJohn joined the top ten.

Other interesting stats:
Johansson (25) and Williams (24) led in KO's while Esperti with 36 losses leads Cab's 33 for this dubious honor.

December, 1957

Rank Name Record

Sonny Liston 22-2-0 (20)

1 Pat McMurtry 23-5-1 (14)
2 Ingemar Johansson 29-6-0 (25)
3 Cleveland Williams 29-7-1 (24)
4 Floyd Patterson 28-7-0 (15)
5 Johnny Summerlin 23-8-0 (16)
6 Zora Folley 20-7-1 (8)
7 Johnny Arthur 28-10-0 (20)
8 Embrel Davidson 21-9-1 (19)
9 Eddie Machon 11-1-0 (4)
10 Mike DeJohn 16-14-0 (12)

Retirees
Johnny Arthur 28-10-0 (20)
Embrel Davidson 21-9-1 (19)
John Holman 22-19-1 (8)

The UBC has decided to break up the HW's into US and European groups. This will make scheduling more realistic. There will be a European Champion, presently Johansson and an overall champ, presently Liston. Fighters will occasionally visit the other continent as scheduled.

Below are the January bouts and quite frankly they're mostly stinkers this month, but things promise to get better with each passing month.

Here's the schedule:

Rome, Italy
Amonti 3-1-0 vs Wesphall 1-2-1
Deklerk 0-2-0 vs Kramp 0-0-0
Cavicchi 16-13-4 vs Peralta 0-0-0

New York, NY
Jackson 17-15-5 vs Fleeman 5-10-1
Johnson 1-4-0 vs Harris 7-8-1
DeJohn 16-14-0 vs Pharo 11-26-3
Cab 8-33-2 vs Bygraves 7-24-1

Miami, Fla.
Baker 0-0-0 vs Hodge 0-0-0
Vargas 6-6-1 vs Hunsacker 11-9-0
Clark 2-10-0 vs Whitehurst 11-9-0
Sales 7-9-4 vs Bethea 12-9-2

Decent fighters in action include Cavicchi (Rome), Jackson and DeJohn (NY) and Bethea (Miami). Four fighters making their debut also.

We'll be back with the results shortly.

Til next time- - -

UBC Dispatch, February, 1958

Below are this month's results and the February rankings.
There will be a somewhat light schedule for February with only five bouts scheduled for London and six for Detroit.

The UBC will schedule venues on a rotating basis among Miami, New York, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco, and a random venue in the US group and Rome, Hamburg, London and Paris in the European group. This will allow the use of "hometown favorites" which have heretofore gone unused.

Since this is my first universe we will continue to make changes in order to get a more realistic approach while keeping it enjoyable.

Top ten contenders in action this month are:
Mc Murtry (23-5-1) vs Chuvalo (0-1-0)
Summerlin (23-8-0) vs Mc Bride (17-29-0)

Since so few of the top 10 have fought so far in 1958 we expect a big influx of top ten contenders in the next month or so.

Here is his record at Boxrec.com:

Rocky Marciano

The date you list was between his title fights LaStarza and Charles. Was the ticket for a benefit or dinner of some sort rather than an actual fight?
