Players ability going down way to fast...
Anyone else notice this? This year a lot of my players, their ability went down ridiculously. Soriano (33 yo) went from MVP #s previous season, and ratings were same when season starter (73/80) and by the end is now a (50/80) and just an OK player. Same for a few other guys on my team. These are once GREAT players, who are around 30-34 yo and lose there skill overnight. I mean, USALLY its a few years of a decline but nothing so drastic without a decent explanation.
Any reasons or ways to fix this..

There was always a lot of talk about the "35 year old crash" going back to V6.0, but I've never really seen it with 33 year olds. Is it happening to many other players, or just this one. You could change the setting under game setup for player aging if it is too common. Could be just an anomaly, just like a pitcher in my league that pitched until he was 45.

This game has so much potential but i feel like things like this turn me off so much I just lose interest in the game.

I had a pitcher (Trevor Reckling in the MLB Roster set) go from a top 10 ERA and strikeout season and 4.5 stars to a 4.5 ERA season and 2.5 stars. Is there a reason for this or just the randomness of the game?

This happens ALL THE TIME in real life...just go look at the ERA leaders from last season and compare them to this season. Also look at guys like Brett Myers and Rich Hill who are performing awful in the minors right now after being consistent ML starters. Plus, depending on your settings, the stars will reflect the players current performance. I don't think there's anything wrong there. |

No, this RARELY happends EVER in real life. You know who this happend too, someone like Roberto Alomar. Otherwise, it is very rare if you sign a STAR player at age 28 to a long term deal..they put up ALL STAR stats for years, and then at some random point in the season in which their 33 they go from a rating of 70's out of 80 to a 40 out of 80 and then within the next year being a 20/80.
Progression is more realistic lke this Age 28-32 average = 300, 35 hr, 110 rbi, 20 sb 33 - 287, 30 hr, 98 rbi, 12 sb 34- 275, 26 hr, 87 rbi, 7 sb 35- 268, 21 hr, 72 rbi 36- 257, 14 hr, 53 rbi etc. as opposed to: Age 28-32 average = 300, 35 hr, 110 rbi, 20 sb 33 - 255, 14 hr, 60 rbi, 2 sb

But if you get acclimated to baseball-reference.com, you'll realize it happens more than you think. You also need to keep in mind that ratings aren't realistic. What are Soriano's stats in your league? My next THREE posts are perfect examples of this happening, and that's just among MVP's. Imagine what it is among everyone else. Look at Richie Sexson, he was performing well until age 32: Year Ag Tm Lg G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG *OPS+ TB SH SF IBB HBP GDP +--------------+---+----+----+----+---+--+---+----+---+--+---+---+-----+-----+-----+----+----+---+---+---+---+---+ 1997 22 CLE AL 5 11 1 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 .273 .273 .273 42 3 0 0 0 0 2 1998 23 CLE AL 49 174 28 54 14 1 11 35 1 1 6 42 .310 .344 .592 135 103 0 0 0 3 3 1999 24 CLE AL 134 479 72 122 17 7 31 116 3 3 34 117 .255 .305 .514 101 246 0 8 0 4 19 2000 25 TOT 148 537 89 146 30 1 30 91 2 0 59 159 .272 .349 .499 112 268 0 4 2 7 11 CLE AL 91 324 45 83 16 1 16 44 1 0 25 96 .256 .315 .460 93 149 0 3 0 4 8 MIL NL 57 213 44 63 14 0 14 47 1 0 34 63 .296 .398 .559 142 119 0 1 2 3 3 2001 26 MIL NL 158 598 94 162 24 3 45 125 2 4 60 178 .271 .342 .547 127 327 0 3 5 6 20 2002 27 MIL NL 157 570 86 159 37 2 29 102 0 0 70 136 .279 .363 .504 128 287 0 4 7 8 17 AS 2003 28 MIL NL 162 606 97 165 28 2 45 124 2 3 98 151 .272 .379 .548 140 332 0 5 7 9 18 MVP-12,AS 2004 29 ARI NL 23 90 20 21 4 0 9 23 0 0 14 21 .233 .337 .578 126 52 0 0 0 0 2 2005 30 SEA AL 156 558 99 147 36 1 39 121 1 1 89 167 .263 .369 .541 144 302 0 3 4 6 15 MVP-15 2006 31 SEA AL 158 591 75 156 40 0 34 107 1 1 64 154 .264 .338 .504 117 298 0 4 5 4 17 2007 32 SEA AL 121 434 58 89 21 0 21 63 1 0 51 100 .205 .295 .399 84 173 0 1 1 5 12 2008 33 TOT AL 78 256 27 56 8 0 11 31 1 0 40 78 .219 .321 .379 91 97 0 3 0 0 9 SEA AL 74 252 27 55 8 0 11 30 1 0 37 76 .218 .315 .381 90 96 0 3 0 0 8 NYY AL 4 4 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 3 2 .250 .571 .250 132 1 0 0 0 0 1 Last edited by Mattymo; 07-22-2008 at 01:02 PM. |

George Foster: His power stayed OK after 1981, but his average went way down (he was 32 in '81)

He went like this:
.283, 40 hr, 120 rbi, 38 sb .258, 20 hr, 66 rbi, 15 sb .235, 6 hr, 40 rbi, 10 sb The year he went down to .258 and declined ALOT was when he was 33. Now my problem is more that his rating went from being 70's to 40's overnight. A fast decline would be going down maybe 10-12 per year in overall rating. Not 30!

If you don't like the default, change the 'Talent Change Randomness' to something lower.

Changing the player aging modifiers is probably a better choice. Maybe try .5 and see if you like the results. I use .70 for my leagues, even though I think the default settings are more realistic. Looks I messed up the "quote" feature... |

Many of the guys mentioned here are steroid cases and their career paths arent realistic. The game shouldnt model them.

Vaughn and JuanGone were...not Sexson, and certainly not Foster. There's hundreds of other cases, even if you want to just stick in the 70s and 80s pre-steroids. |
