The Flamin' Flamingo
The Flamin’ Flamingo
What do you do, when due to injuries, your season begins and your pitching staff is one starter short? I guess you could hit the Free Agent market, but suppose you just don’t have the money to compete with the big boys salaries and the “leftovers” just don‘t seem worth it. I guess you could try to trade for someone, but hey, you have spent the last six seasons rebuilding your team and really there is no one of any status that you want to part with. Of course, there is always the Farm System! Maybe it is time to bring up one of those 5 star pitchers that you drafted. Your last few horrible years of rebuilding has afforded you the worst record in Baseball which does come with a bonus, great Draft Picks! As you scan your minor league system you see beautiful blue stars everywhere! Some players have five stars, some four, all look pretty good! All of your “future starters” look great. All of their numbers are excellent! Well, let me rephrase that, there is one number that causes you a problem. That number is their age. All are twenty-two or younger. That is really not a problem. Great young talent stands poised and ready over the horizon, but you need some one right now. You know if you bring them up too early you will ruin them. Is it worth it when you can tell that you are probably still a year or two from making the playoffs? You mind says, “Go for it!”, but your heart says, “No need to hinder your future.” So, reluctantly but wisely you pass over the five, four and even two star youngsters. AND then…..you see him Jeffrey “The Flamin’ Flamingo” Florio! The Flamingo was acquired in a trade a few years ago as a “throw in” by the other team to add volume, not talent, to their offer. I had agreed to take Jeffrey, not because I wanted him, but wanted the trade to go through. My plans were to dump Jeffrey off on someone else later. I really had no plans for a two star pitcher that my Legendary scout had warned me about. In fact he said, “If Jeffrey is on the mound make sure that your bull pen is rested!” I usually listen to him. That’s what I pay him the big bucks for! But as my season is about to start and I need one more pitcher to fill a slot in the rotation. I decide to give a call to our AA club. That’s right, the Flamin’ Flamingo at the age of 25 is still struggling through AA ball with an “avoiding runs rating” of 1. I give them a call and Jeffrey jumps from AA all the way to the BIG SHOW. I know he’ll get stomped, but at least he will give my starters a rest every fifth day. I expect to use him for a few weeks until I can figure out some type of trade that will upgrade his spot. I begin my sims and surprisingly my team holds their own even with Jeffrey. I sim another week and another week and to my surprise after a little over a month in the Bigs, the Flamin’ Flamingo has a record of 4-0! His ERA is nothing to right home about, but the goof ball keeps winning! Below are his stats. It’s amazing, even when he does get spanked he either gets no decision or still gets the win!!! Let’s see how far He will go. I‘ll keep you posted! … DATE 4/5/2046 IP 7.2 HA 7 R 2 ER 2 DEC. W 4/10/2046 IP 6.1 HA 7 R 4 ER 3 DEC. W 4/24/ 2046 IP 3 HA 8 R 8 ER 8 DEC. no dec 5/1/2046 IP 4.1 HA 7 R 4 ER 4 DEC. no dec. 5/7/2046 IP 7 HA 8 R 2 ER 2 DEC. W 5/13/ 2046 IP 7 HA 10 R 6 ER 6 DEC. W 4 WINS IN A ROW FOR THE FLAMINGO!! |

The Flamin' Flamingo continues his winning streak!
His next three games: 5/13/2046 IP 7 HA 7 R 2 ER 2 DEC. W 5/18/2046 IP 8 HA 6 R 3 ER 3 DEC. W 5/26/2046 IP 6 HA 5 R 1 ER 1 DEC. W Jeffrey "The Flamin' Flamingo" Florio is still sporting a "1 runs allowed" rating and I am warned by my legendary scout that Jeffrey is destined to be a carrer minor leaguer. With that in mind. The Flamingo is now 7-0 in my number 5 spot in the rotation! How far will he go? Anyone care to take a guess? |

Sounds alot like good ole' Stubby Overmire from my Tigers in SO49. Maybe the Flamingo is his grandson or something. I needed a 4th starter last year, so I called up Stubby. Like you a figured his 3 at preventing runs would get my bullpen some work...To my surprise, he went on a hot streak and ended up starting a game in the 1952 World Series! We lost though. Damn Phils.

What is his Run Support? Just figured I'd ask because of all the 8-runs allowed No-Decisions.

The Flamingo is now 12-0!!!
6/20/2046 IP 6 HA 3 R 2 ER 1 NO DECISION 6/25/2046 IP 7 HA 4 R 3 ER 3 WIN 7/08/2046 IP 6.1 HA 11 R 5 ER 4 WIN On the same day that my Legendary Scout reminded me that Jeffrey Florio would spend his life in the minors. Jeffrey recieved the call telling him that he made the 2046 ALL STAR TEAM!! Has anyone seen anything like this before? 12-0 with a runs allowed rating of two! "Doubles" asked about his run support. It seems that on those days, my usually low scoring team is knocking the budookies out of the ball scoring in double figures! How far can The Flamingo go? |

The Flamin' Flamingo is now 14-0!
7/13/2046 IP 8.1 HA 5 R 1 ER 1 WIN AND PLAYER OF THE GAME 7/19/2046 IP 3 HA 8 R 5 ER 5 NO DECISION!!! 7/24/ 2046 IP 8 HA 6 R 4 ER 3 WIN!!! The Flamin' Flamingo is 14-0. However, I am warned that my bull pen needs to be well rested if Jeffrey is on the mound! This is not necessarily wrong. Check out 7/19. Only three innings pitched and still no loss! |

Well, I'm not sure its the longest, but in one of my leagues, my greatest pitcher ever, Jim St. Vrain had a 14 game win streak, but Im pretty sure he had an avoiding runs rating higher than 1.
