Griffey hurt again.

Saw that Griffey dislocated his shoulder in Saturday's game against the Cubs and preliminarily could be out anywhere from 5 weeks to the rest of the year. The guy should just hang it up already. Reds might have a decent team if they could rid themselves of him.

Yeah, cause I mean it really sucks to have a guy willing to risk his body and his career in order to save the game for his team. Geez, the Reds really need to rid themselves of this prick.

<sarcasm end>

It really p*sses me off that people actually booed Griffey while he was on the ground in pain. The Reds give up practically nothing to get him from the Mariners, he takes a pay cut to play for his home town team and he gets booed because he has had some injury problems. Yet, the New York Yankee fans welcome guys like Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden with open arms, when these guys screwed up their own careers with drugs and alcohol. God forbid someone run into injury problems.

Griffey

Yes Junior is hurt again and yes what the hometown fans was harsh but in all honesty Since he came over he has spent more time on the DL than playing.

Once he is healed the Reds should try to trade him for some starting pitching.

That would be a good idea except for I don't think too many teams are going to be willing to trade for the injury-ridden Griffey right now.

Grant Hill and Ken Griffey have nothing in common.... I am sure Griffey has 8 or so years left and everyone won't be injury prone. Grant Hill is done for. Yes, Griffey is hurt, at least he did it in style I really hate those ****s that boo him. If you boo your own player because he DOVE for a ball to save the game so your sorry ***es could go home happy and he could go home happy, then you really need to stop going to the games and never cheer for the Reds again cause I don't want to be in the same boat as you.

I feel really really bad for him.

I feel more bad for myself, because I have myriads of Griffey rookie cards and I want those values up again =P

I agree that booing an injured player - any injured player - is an act severely lacking in class. I'm not a Reds fan, but I think I'd be right if I believed that those fans were not booing a guy for trying to make a play; they were expressing their extreme frustration that the guy who came over to be the cornerstone of their franchise is once again not going to be in a position to contribute anything to the team. And they're tired of it. Surely not good, but certainly understandable.

Anyway, I stand by my initial statement. I think it would be great for him and for Reds fans if he didn't have to miss too much time and then came back strong. But I don't expect that to happen. He should hang it up because he's not doing anybody any good by sticking around. He's an anchor around the team's neck and if he wants to continue to play he needs to start over somewhere else. In getting hurt he didn't try to do anything 85% of the rest of the players in the league wouldn't have tried to do.

Some Yankees fans continued to cheer for Strawberry and Gooden long after they should have stopped, but they liked those guys because they produced for New York when they played. Griffey was great (maybe the best player in the league at the time) in Seattle but I don't think he'll ever earn the same kind of appreciation in Cincinnatti that Strawberry and Gooden earned in N.Y.

I'd understand the retirement argument if it were the same injury again. It's a seperated shoulder though; something that is a fluke more than anything. A seperated shoulder isn't something that a "tough" player doesn't get, nor is it something that can be prevented by taking better care of your body, with the exception in this case of not diving to make a catch, which would have probably got him boos in the first place.

Yes, I can totally understand the frustration of seeing Griffey hurt again, but I can't understand booing of his injury. And you don't boo bad luck. You boo because someone screwed up or because someone did a bad thing. Griffey didn't do either of those, and didn't deserve that.

you beat me to it...I was gonna say the same thing.

That trade looks horribly in Seattles favor now, when everyone was saying Seattle got hosed when they did it.

It's sad. He's a good player getting some bad breaks.

Hopefully, this won't have a negative impact on attendence numbers in the new stadium. He'll be back. I'm hoping 5 or 6 weeks and boom! Back to the old Griffey.

If the Reds really want some starting pitching. As a Yankee fan, I'd be more than happy to trade away some of our old guys for an injured Griffey. Have him sit on the DL, get healthy. Place him at DH ('cause Bernie's a better center fielder), and watch Jr. take advantage of the short porch in Yankee Stadium's right field.

Then watch....

Everyone will cry how the great empire of New York stole one of the best hitters in baseball history away from the small market Reds.

Bernie's a better center fielder than Griffey?

Maybe with a seperated shoulder.

Even considering an often-injured Griffey, I'd take him in center over Bernie. Not saying Bernie is a bad center fielder or anything, but he's not the center fielder he once was, and doesn't have the range that a Griffey who can run has.

But, Bernie is to our era, what Mantle was in the 50s and 60s and Dimaggio was in the 30s and 40s. He's not as prolific with the bat as those two, but he's THE centerfielder: A New York Icon that hasn't been filled by anyone SINCE Mantle.

I think you can agree with me on that one.

So, if Griffey was to make it onto the Yankees... I don't think Torre would move Bernie.

Besides. Griffey may be faster, though with the hamstring problems, I doubt it. Bernie does well with reading the ball of the bat. I can't argue at who's better than who. I'll just say that I'd rather have Bernie patrolling the Stadium's centerfield over Jr. -- No disrespect to Jr. Just a load of respect for Bernie.

It's a moot point. The Griffey fans are remembering the guy they saw play up through 1999. He's been in serious decline since then because of his injuries and his attitude. Stick a fork in him.

Serious decline? I don't think so. You haven't seen a healed Griffey since '99...... And he did actually start out really well this year.

No offense to Bernie again, but he was never the "icon" of the Yankees. I totally agree he's been an underrated player for what he's done over the years, but as much as he's been the senior member of the club, he's never been the guy in the spotlight. It went straight from Mattingly to Jeter.

Mantle, DiMaggio... these are players who were the best players on the Yankees, the ones who were in the media eyes, and the first name thought of when talking about the team in the era. Bernie was never that, and it wasn't his fault. He wasn't an outgoing person who wanted media attention. He just wanted to play ball.

Can I name Yankee icons after Mantle? Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter (although Munson may be a stretch).

Again, I'm not knocking Bernie Williams; he's had a great career up to this point, and I don't see him dropping off soon. But it's not as if he was the greatest Yankee since Mantle.

And for the record, although I'd give Griffey the shot in center, I agree that Torre would leave Williams there. He's loyal to his vets, and unless Bernie felt that he wanted to move, Torre wouldn't ask him to. Plus, common sense says that if you don't have to rush an injured player back into the field, you don't.

Not that the Yankees would get him anyway.

Hmmm, that's funny 'cause that is about what people said about Mark McGwire back in 1993 and 1994 when he only played in 71 combined games and only hit a total of 18 homeruns. I think he recovered rather well despite being done
