Question BZ 1685: Retiring Players

I have encountered several problems with retiring players both historical and fictional.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
1. With the game set to retire historical players historically, I have had quite a few players scheduled to retire at the end of a season, actually retiring in the middle of the season. Several players have actually retired in the middle of the play-offs.<o></o>
2. I have had several fictional players retire in the middle of a season. In one case, the player was going for the Triple Crown, which he eventually won. This particular player was only 23 years olf, with no injury problems and acutally retired twice during the season. In each case, he retired right after the end of a minor league season when the game generated free agents and retired players. In this case, I simply opened the player profile, unretired the player, assigned him back to the team on which he was playing, and updated the salary information.<o></o>
3. I have had several players retire and then remain on the active roster. Thier profiles show them as retired. So I simply moved them off the active roster in the Transaction screen by dragging their names off the bottom right of the screen. I waited until the calendar year changed in the system in the hopes that the player would be removed normally.<o></o>
<o></o>
I have been able to catch these events with human controlled teams; but I have no idea how many players have retired in this manner from AI teams.<o></o>
Just thought you should know.<o></o>

I'm not a historical expert, but I'm wondering if RAH is working on the retirement date in Lahman, and if so, it could be possible that a player retired in real life in October (because his team didn't make the playoffs), but in the game they did and he still retired.

I wonder if RAH is affecting fictional players by checking if they played the following year and on finding they haven't, retires them.

I wondered about that too; but you would think it would affect quite a few players instiead of singling out specific players. It happened agains in the following season with the fictional player. Now he's 25, with nor injury history and nothing that would inidcate a need for early retirement. Another player affected by this phenoma was traded and he was retired by the game even though he was still in his late twenties.

As long as I can catch the early retirement, it's more of a nusaince.

I'm going to start another game because the game in question was started before I installed the "patch". I was just curious if any one else had experienced the same problem.

Just to be sure, I logged #1 as BZ 1685. I've heard someone mention that before.

For #2, was the player in the minor leagues at the time of his retirement? Could he have been going for the Triple Crown of a very low level of minor leagues? Players will be more likely to retire if you keep them buried in the minors well below their ability level.

For #3, do you have league files with the problem in question, before you edited the players back?

The player going for the Triple Crown was in the Majors. I've finished 5 seasons now and this particular player is retired every time a minor league finishes its season. He's never been assigned to a minor league team., other than on the day of the draft. Since he's fictional, there are no real life stats with whcih to compare.

The third problem has only occurred twice and only with the human controlled team. I've player a couple of seasons now since that problem last occured. So I'd say that one is behind me.

I'm still having players retire before the end of there season. When I've caught them, I've put them back on their teams. Then everything seemed to flow noramlly and the players retired at the end of the season. AGain, this problem seems to diminsh with more seasons played.

I have played some years with historical, but not any retirement date set to be real-life.

Result shows several players retire mid-season. Perhaps not on the active rosters, but if they get released in July, August they retire almost within 2 days. I´m talking about players that sometimes are not more than 28-29 years old.

It seams the game is very fast to retire players.

I've noticed that the game is quick to retire some players. Aside from the difficulties I've already mentioned, retirement has worked well. I have noticed that players who will retire at the end of a season, still want to negotiate new contracts. This does not really surprise me or even cause any real problems. Ironcially, I had two players over a couple of seasons, who had negotiated new contracts and then were injured during the play-offs. At least this has the appaearnce of reality and does add interest to the game. I've yet to find a player who should have retired historically who opted to take the contract and stay active.

I want to continue to use the historical retirement because of players who have passed on. In the older versions of OOTP, this made me feel "uncomfortable." At least now, they only play until the end of their last real season.

I haven't tried importing historical players into a game to see how retirement affects them. If anyone has, I'd be interested in their experience.

BZ 1685 was marked as fixed for the upcoming patch. I'll leave this thread open until we resolve the fictional players retiring, however.

I'll be happy to send those files to you. I just have to copy them over to the PC I use on line. I play the game on a PC that isn't set up for the internet. I'll do that tonight and send them tomorrow.

I was going to send you the files you requested; but the problem has stopped. I've played two seasons since my last response and I've only noticed one player (historical) retiring before the end of a season and nothing with ficational players at all. I did not have room to save the original files once I started playing around with the paritcular player's settings. Just before my last response, I did go through and edit just about everything that could be edited in the player's profile. In most cases, I simply retyped the exisitng values. However, wherever a "0" appeared, I changed it to one (1). This appears to have eliminated the problem. Hope this information helps.
