File sizes
A couple questions. I am trying to keep the league files as small as possible. The stats levels are not on very high. We don't use scouts. There are two areas I'm concerned about.
1) messages. The same saves messages on open and close. The time gets longer as I go. If I delete all the messages in the message folder and the message dat file, will the system start from scratch or try to regen the messages as blank messages (I would envision doing this at the start of very season) 2) is the almanac folders. I don't think this affects the exports (may once when the they are generated), but it I have to copy (back up) of re-create a zip file, this gets very large. How you the rest of you hanlde this? We are only staring season 3, so at the moment it's not too bad but I want to set some expectations and processes in place before I have a problem. Thanks The Gaffer (HNBA) |

I believe I can answer the first question: if you delete the messages and the "messages.dat" file, then the messages should be permanently removed.
Now I'll pose my own question about the almanac. I've never delved into this part of OOTP. How do online leagues use this (if you use it at all)? My understanding is the almanacs can get pretty large rather quickly. Do you create them and then burn them onto a disc? How do you access them then, and what benefits do creating an almanac provide on online with anyway?

Thanks on the messages.
Your understanding on size is correct. Ours are in the 330mb range per season (they also include all the images which is a bit buch). I'm not sure how/if to use them. Since we are starting from scratch with all the historical players, it seemed safer to create it than to lose the data, but even my 500GB hard drive may be challenged here. I dont beleive they are part of the exports and I don't include them in the zip file (they are zipped separately). I haven't tried accessing them from the game to see what is reported. It is an area I am looking for some experience with. |

I've never bothered using Almanacs in my online leagues as Commish and can't recall any leagues I've been in as a player that used them either. Just save a copy of your .lg file after every year as a backup. Almanacs are merely snapshots of your league up to that point in time, which is exactly what the .lg file backups would be as well. Almanacs are just larger because of all of the .html files whereas the .lg files would generate those later as necessary rather than all at once.

I do save the .lg files, which also contains the almanac. So it sounds like I have the same data twice.
