Beltin’ Bill Melton – the 11th pick by the Giants in 63, was ranked the 21st best prospect in 64, but was hurt often and in 1967 was beaned, suffered a fractured skull and retired
Don Kessinger played 1 full season in Seattle and suffered a career ender the first month of the next year

My Favorite Players
Luis Aparicio played for 6 different teams, in 1971 he hit .307 for the Phillies, making the All-Star team and winning a Gold Glove at age 37. He is in his last year of his contract and has 511 career stolen bases.

Sal Bando was the 12th overall pick by the Tigers in the 64 draft. He is a 3-time All-Star and he just completed his 5th full season with the Tigers. He has 106 HR’s, 458 rbi’s and a .277 career hitter.

Nolan Ryan was the 2nd overall pick in 1964 by the Cubs. He was released by the Cubs in 67 because of control problems. He was immediately signed by Baltimore and struggled with the same issue until 1970. The Royals picked him up on waivers and after 12 starts suffered a elbow injury that kept him out for 11 months. In 1971 he was claimed off waivers by San Diego where he is now. His control is improving, but at 25 the Padres just gave him a 1 year deal so who knows. Career stats 39-59, 4.88 ERA in 785 IP he has 566 K’s and 487 BB’s.

Brett was the 7th overall pick by the Expos in 1970. He made it to the big club in 1974 at 20 years of age. He hit .306, .316, .326, .315, 284 and .350 the first 6 years. A 5-time All-Star he won the MVP award in 1979 and Gold Gloves in 73 and 75. In 1980 he was injured on May 11th and missed the rest of the season.

He was signed as a free agent by Pittsburgh in 1981 for 2 years at $717,400 a year. Missed 3 weeks to injury at the beginning of the season in 81, but went on to hit .325 in 127 games.

The Royals lost over 100 games their first 3 years in the league and their first winning season was in 1975. In 1978 they won their only Division Title going 90-72 and losing to the NY Mets in the World Series.

They just signed 35 yr. old Nolan Ryan to a 3 year deal. Chili Davis is their top prospect. They finished 76-86 in 1981.

The 77 Indians went 94-68, 1 game ahead of the Yankees and defeated the defending champion LA Dodgers in the World Series. The team offense ranked 4th (.258) and their pitching staff ranked 5th (3.35) in the AL.

The pitching staff was led by 30 year old Mike Torrez (20-9 3.43) who they claimed off waivers before the start of the season. The other 3 starters were Rick Reuschel (19-19), Catfish Hunter (18-18) and rookie Tony Brizzolara (10-10). The bullpen was anchored by one of my all time favs Sparky Lyle and he was great with 31 saves and a 1.28 ERA.

The offense was led by 24 year old DH Jim Rice (26 102 .278), Gold Glove 1B Darrell Evans, 3B Craig Nettles and RF Dave Parker. The other starters were LF Don Baylor, CF Jerry Mumphrey, 2B Lenny Randle, SS Mike Phillips and C's Butch Wynegar and Jim Essian. Their team 138 Hr's led the Major Leagues.
They also had rookie and future start Willie Aikens on the bench.

Larry Jackson was a very steady SP throughout his career, never winning 20 games, but posting a 265-223 record. He pitched for the Indians in 63-64, but was traded to the Yankees in 65 where he went on to win a World Series that year going 19-10. He posted double digit victories in 16 straight seasons, going just 1-2 in his final year with the Brewers. Besides the teams above he also played for the Cardinals and Braves. He was an All-Star 7 times.

Just finshed simming thru the 91 season so here is some info on Donny Baseball and how Toronto did with all those hitters.

Mattingly had some nice seasons with the O's 83-86, hitting .304,.332, .307 and .326. Power improved each year 12-14-29-38. He signed as a free agent with St. Louis in 87 and is numbers starting going the other way .328, .294, .275 and hit between 11 and 16 dingers. In 1990 he only hit .235 and the next year was shipped to AAA. At 30 years old his ratings plummeted to where I would be surprosed if he made it to the bigs again.

Toronto has yet to finish higher than 3rd and 85 wins is their season high in 87 and 91.

Eric Davis career avg, is just .247 and left Toronto to play for the Yankees in 86 where is still playing. He did steal 72 bases in 85, 98 bases in 86 and 60 in 88, but not more than 25 in any other year oddly enough.

Kevin Mitchell had a belwo average career and it ended at 29 with a career ender at the end of the 91 season.

Canseco was released by Toronto in 84 after hitting 135 HR's in the minors, but only played 61 games in the bigs. Enter the Reds who claimed him and he hit 161 dingers for them over the next 5 years with a high of 47 in 1990 and he's the AL MVP winner. Before the 91 season he became a free agent and signed a 4 yr deal with the Braves where in his first season won the NL MVP as he hit 47-130-.310.

Bob Horner did stick with the team 11 years and is the career HR leader with only 199.

Rich Gossage also one of my favorites was the 15th pick in the 69 draft by the Mets. Made his ML debut in 70 and went on the pitch 8 seasons for the Mets. Didn't get the closer role until 74 when he had 39 saves and a 2.09 ERA. Then they made him a starter in the 2nd half of 75 and all of 76. He did go 13-12 with a 2.84 erny. In 77 he lost the entire season to injury and was signed a free agent by Atlanta. He didn't pitch well in Atlanta, had a 5.43 ERA in 79. IN the off-season he was traded along with Bob Dernier to CAL for Sal Bando. 2 good years there, 44 saves in both seasons before being signed as a free agent by the Reds. He spent 10 years with the Reds geting 159 saves. He retired as the MLB career saves leader at 345.

Steve Garvey Was inducted into the HOF in 1986. He was drafted by the Phiiles 1st pick in round 2. He was selected by the Padres in the 1968 expansion draft and was released and signed by the Cubs 3 days later. He played with the Cubs 69-75, Dodgers 76-78, Yankees 79, Pirates 80-81, White Sox 82, Twins 83-86.

Murphy was the 3rd player selected by Astros in the 73 draft. He debuted in 75 and played with Hoston until 83. Didn;t hit his stride until 78 when hit hit .302 with 23 homers. He only hit .300 one other time in his career (83). In 84 he signed a 5 yr deal with the Yankees and had his best year in 84 with 35-113-.283. The Yanks traded him at the end of the 86 season to the Phillies and the Phils traded him the next year to the Cubs. He played only 1 game for the Yankees his final year and retured.
