Eriq's OOTP9 Adventures In Linux!

Well, this is just a quick post to say that I've gotten OOTP9 installed on Ubuntu Linux (8.04 "Hardy Heron", to be precise), using WINE 1.0, and it works a treat!

So far, everything seems to run just fine. FaceGen (I set it to "troubleshooting mode 1", the same as I did for OOTP8), and in-game sound are fine. I get errors from Wine if I have music playing when I launch the game, but that's Wine's problem, not OOTP's.

It's definitely much snappier than OOTP8, even the interface seems more responsive. The only thing I'm curious about is if FTP exports still get mangled, but I'm not in an OOTP9 online league, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Just wanted to let any other Linux users out there (all 3 or 4 of you) that OOTP9 works great. Nothing like paying more for a game than for the OS that I play it in, huh?

Here's a quick screenshot, just to show you all how it looks:

Thanks, Markus! It's good to know that both of my nerdy hobbies can coexist happily.

Well, it's posible to install Linux on a PS3, so why not?

The mind boggles!

I think MLB:The Show 2008 for the PS3 is hands down the best baseball game ever made.

Never played it, but I have heard good things.

I was jesting of course, but whenever a debate comes up about in game graphics or sound, it seems that a lot of people on the boards do not want the game to go in the console direction.

I thought it ironic that someone was trying to install this game on a console, in effect, making it a console game.

I've got installed on SLED 10.1 but it won't license. I'll admit that I haven't done any searching on how to overcome that but if you have any tips that come to mind, that would be great.

If not, I'll do some research tomorrow or sometime this weekend.

Thanks.

Right behind OOTP 9, yes

I don't play console baseball games. You could throw a controller in anger and suffer a career ending injury. I've learned my lesson.

Licensing went just fine for me in Ubuntu, same as when I installed OOTP6 and OOTP8. I suppose it could be a firewall issue, I have no idea what port(s) the eLicense control tries to communicate over.

this is good news. i was wondering how it well it would work in the new version of WINE.

To the original poster:

I know you just posted this yesterday, so you haven't had all that much time to continue testing. Is it still working well for you - no show stoppers?

I have the same setup as you (Ubuntu 8.04). I have never used Wine before, as I have a Windows laptop provided by my company that I can use for the infrequent Windows needs (my scanner, specifically), I don't play video games, and Ubutu has native apps for pretty much everything I need. This shows you how interested I am in this game. A friend of mine told me about it yesterday and sent me the link today, and boy does it look awesome. Then i did a forum search for 'Linux' and found this thread.

The read that Wine released version 1.0 very recently. The version of Wine in the Ubuntu repositories is pre-1.0. I hesitate to install something outside fo the repository system - do you think OOTP9 would work with whatever version is in the repositories (0.9.something)?

Basically, I'm good with Linux, a newbie with Wine, and very interested in this game. I'd like to confirm that I could get it to work before purchasing it. Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

Yeah, so far, so good. The only thing that didn't work properly in 2007/8 was FTP exports for my online league, and I haven't had a chance to try that in 9 yet.

The only thing I'd call a "bug" is that Wine tries to take over ALSA on my system. If I have something running making noise (Sonata, for example), I get an error from Wine, although it doesn't stop me from playing. If I start OOTP up with nothing else going on, none of my sound apps make noise. Again, this is some sort of goofiness with Wine/ALSA, not OOTP. and it's hardly a showstopper.

It probably will - I had OOTP8 running back when Wine was on 0.9.59 (which seems to be the version still in the repos). I've had no problems with the Wine repos, they're certainly a reputable enough group. Although, if you're skittish about the unofficial repository, you could always build Wine from source.

I suppose you could also try running natively in Windows through VMWare, Qemu or VirtualBox, but there'd probably be a fairly significant performance hit running it in a virtualized environment like that, and I don't know if FaceGen would work properly.

FWIW, I'm the "Super Maintainer" for OOTP over at the Wine AppDB, so if you try it out and have any input, go ahead and post it over there too.

Weird...worked just fine the second time. EDIT: I'm talking about the licensing stuff I mentioned above.

One other thing...Desktop Effects seem to mess with OOTP. Without Desktop Effects everything lauches flawlessly. With Desktop Effects it looks like it's going to start but then it appears to freeze. Then all of a sudden some sort of distorted image appears and the only way to get it back again is to do some sort of Desktop Effect action...like Shift + F9 for the rain effect. After I do that it works just fine.

Very odd.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.
