1871 The Start of Baseball
The year was 1871 and group of unknown citizens decided to band together to play a new pastime called baseball. A total of 8 teams were formed and grouped into 2 leagues called the American and National leagues.
The American League consisted of Baltimore Canaries, Cleveland Forest Citys, Philadelphia Athletics, and the St Louis Brown Stockings. The National League consists of Boston Red Stockings, Brooklyn Atlantics, Chicago White Stockings, and the Cincinnati Reds. I was asked/hired to lead St Louis. The league will hold an inaugural draft. The schedule will have 30 games and there will be playoffs best of seven series. Expansion will be when it was done in real life. Lets see how the big players performed. ![]()

Very cool. Are the home run numbers accurate for the era? I don't know a lot about 19th century base ball but I think I have more motivation to study it now.

Home runs are accurate for this era. Take Ross Barnes for example. He played ten seasons in real life. .359 avg with 6 HR and 350 RBI.

Following with interest. I'm looking at strikeouts for the period. Could you post the total number of league strikeouts for 1871-1878? I'm interested in how the game is correcting itself over the years.

In 1878 there were 949 strike outs in American League and 1131 in National League. I could not find any stats from the past seasons.

Thanks. I was kind of interested in the past seasons to see if there's any kind of yo-yo effect going on from the autocorrections in the league totals. The default 1871 totals start out way too high (in my replay as well), and your totals in 1878 are maybe 20% too high. From your leaderboards, though, it looks like your intervening seasons have been about on the money or even too low. Maybe the 1878 totals are just a result of new pitchers getting innings. I appreciate your checking.
