I'm torn between being amazed that people never learn about roster sets, and why can't we stop complaining.
Roster sets are a snapshot in time. So they're not intended to be a replacement for the "real thing," they will get you off on the right foot. However, if there are no ratings for people, then we should understand "why" there are no ratings. Is it simply because there isn't enough information to make a reasonable guess? As for the ratings being "wrong", it's a gamble to say that one person is "faster" than another, going on something other than stats. I haven't looked deeply at the roster set, but if it is flawed as you indicate, then that would be a disappointment. Especially considering the work that went into getting the affiliations and team names straight (it's a pain, no matter how you look at it). As for the negativity, I would suggest being constructive in your criticism, and point out what is "right" as well as what is "wrong". It's not all bad, for sure. There is a lot RIGHT about this game. And the fact that the minor league teams may not be rated correctly is not a show-stopper. But the difficulty in putting these roster sets together, coupled by the INTENSE CRITICISM of those who who do the work (for free, no less) is why you probably don't see more than a few people going through the hassle of putting these things together. In closing, I would submit that if there are widespread problems with the rosters, let Markus know in a professional manner. Perhaps the wrong file was sent with the release(?). But rest assured, this game is a good investment, and the roster issues have always been here, and probably always will be...it's just a fact. (Unless someone is going to monitor EVERY move by EVERY team EVERY day, and update the stats as well)

when you get a chance see if their a difference with the Major in the quickstart. I wonder if they are the same and why listed two times in the gamme. Main menu MLB option and Quick start Major. |

It's logical to have both starting options, new people might not understand the quick start option.

This is a minor rant. (im sorry - i didn't read all the posts to see if it was covered). But I keep seeing people complain about rosters and I don't get it. Rosters will always be a moving target. The only logical way would be to base rosters at the END OF THE MAJOR LEAGUE SEASON. That (to me) is the only place to build a roster set. (Since you are basing 'next year' performance on last years stats). What happens between November and April should not apply to the building of a seasonal set. Thats my 2 cents.

I think you are missing the scope of the issue... lots of players have no ratings.. lots of 1-1-1 ratings... these basically mean the player is completely useless... ok I wouldnt do that to rookie ball guys, but if it was them, there might be a point where we have to say, there wasnt time to work all the way down to a ball... but these are guys that should be in AAA |

Even the guys drafted in the 50th round of the draft have potential...

Here is the Tucson Sidewinders pitching staff after I did the edits, see how they all belong where they are... or deserve to be promoted... I am thinking this is the way to go, and hopefully the AI wont kill all the work on the first day

Wow, Ozzie. You didn't even try to hide your real identity for very long this time. The screenshot with your name in it is a very nice touch.

Can we please stay on topic of trying to fix this? I am not here to talk about the past (Thanks to Mark McGwire for the quote) I just think I stumbled onto how to curb the AI from screwing with everything so badly.

I have purchased every version of OOTP since inception. I go year after year and never think twice. This is the FIRST year I have contemplated my 40.00 investment. I have not ordered as of yet. The main reason - ROSTERS. It has never been done right and I am not sure it ever can. Yes - the AI will destroy the "order" of the lineups quickly - however, ratings and "completeness" is a different story. A frustrated lover of the game here!

I asked this in another thread, but I might not have been clear enough. Would Cubby Fan's latest roster sets that he made a while back work for OOTP 9?

I think this is really something here... If you carefully watch the ratings, keeping each player at the level they should be, or you want them at, as long as there isnt positional or injury issues, the AI doesnt totally wreck things |

From the "Damned if you do and damned if you don't" category.
- Do not ship Real Rosters - FAIL - Ship Real Rosters, but not to the lofty expectations of some users - FAIL I am convinced that Markus will never, ever be able to please everyone when it comes to roster sets. The game is too complex IMO for one or two people to be able to create accurate rosters with universally approved ratings (is that even a possbility?) So, Markus needs to come up with a better tool for roster makers, or hire someone to do it. No matter how well intentioned a roster maker is (or isn't as one of the main posters in this thread should know) It is just too big a project to take on with the current tools without having life get in the way. This is just my opinion.

It really seems that the process was broke before...
You cant just say look at one piece of the information and expect the game's AI to handle everything correctly. It seems you have to do the ratings as you see them, then you have to go back and tweak them after the fact to keep players from being moved non stop by the AI. Plus I think as a whole, players are underated in most roster sets. |

I will say this again, this roster problem can be fix, if OOTp lets you enter the stats of players and the game will display the correct ootp rating.
Right now roster makers have to put the ratings in first and hope that it will produce close to their stats. The game has it backwards and makes it difficult for any roster maker. Until they change that, real roster will always have problems. |

Yep. I've said it many times- I think this game is brilliant. Love it. I just wish there were some way to make roster-making simpler. I don't have any answers, sadly, or I would just do it...or make my own game ( ). I just wish there was SOME kind of way to create real rosters with real financials and have it not take 15 people 6 months to get it done. With a game this deep, maybe that's just hoping for far too much. |

I've done zero work so far on rosters (a regret) for 2009 but I would be more than happy to help out if anyone wants to get a community rating project underway. I know from my time here I know quite a lot about the Marlins/Cardinals minor leaguers and could handle the Cubs as well.
Thoughts? I think it's a good idea. Would the export thing work? I would rather not re-hash my rosters from OOTP 2008 because I know there were a lot of bugs in them that I would like to be done with once and for all... |

I don't think there will ever be real financials in the game due to the Players Association. Markus stated as such during the beta when this was discussed. Real financials were never planned so their absense is a total non-issue.
