Soriano Out: What Now for the Cubs?
Tonight, Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano had his season put on hold for about six weeks after he was hit in the hand with a pitch (to add insult to injury, the pitcher who did it was a scrub substituted at the last minute). As of tonight, the Cubs have the best record in major league baseball. What is losing Soriano for a month and a half going to do to them?

It will keep them from taking more advantage of the Cardinals, who just lost Pujols for a few weeks.

It's going to contribute to their losing the title of best record in baseball. They've played about the softest schedule to date of any major league team, and their upcoming two months will be significantly more difficult, particularly without Soriano. They're still a talented ballclub, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them still in first place upon Soriano's return, but I would be surprised if they have one of the best two records.

Doomed. They might win 1 or 2 games the next few weeks.

The Cubs were without his services for a couple weeks earlier this year and won a good portion of their games. Soriano's loss will not cause too much heartache to the Cubs.
Also, the Cardinal's will not be able to sustain their run. They have played virtually the same schedule as the Cubs and I don't think their pitching staff will be able to sustain them. |

I think they'll surprise you. Soriano was due for his usual decline. This time he won't be using up a roster slot while he finds his way back.

The Cubs have enough on their bench and in the rest of the lineup to minimize Fonzie's loss. They say he'll be out six weeks, but in reality he'll be gone for longer than that. His timing will be off once he returns and as with D Lee's wrist injury a couple of years ago, we might not see much power output from Alfonso until September. Chicago can sustain its lead and, in fact, have increased it by a game since the injury. They swept the Braves and the Cards lost to the Reds last night. |

Yeah, I'm confident the Cubs will do just fine without him. His defense was one of the worst in baseball(although improved since his horrid few games in a row a month or so back) and that will only improve our pitching.
I wouldn't be shocked if we were 25 games over .500 when he comes back but won't be upset if they play .500 ball the whole time. That will be enough to contain first place most likely. |

The Cubs are playing the Jays this weekend. If they score 2 runs per game they might sweep.

Just signed Ben Broussard to minor league contract but can't play LF.
How about Edmonds in LF,Fukudome in CF and Ward RF or if sign Bonds LF who could plantoon and the other 2 wouldn't have to change postions or if sign Lofton then just Edmonds to LF or try to get Ordonez from the Tigers? Griffey is not a option because perfers the Rays close to his home in Orlando and considering waving his no trade clause to go their or even Dunn because it would cost like Pie and so on. Maybe Winn from the Giants if they don't have to include Cedeno,Marshall or Koyie Hill in it.
