Free Agency: Length and Process

In my league, we arrived to free agency around Nov 15. Very few major players signed even up until Jan 1 which has created frustration amongst the league's membership. On Jan 2, a ton of players signed but still some big names remain into the month of January.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal? I'd love to get feedback from others regarding how your free agent periods have functioned and what to look for in future seasons. Thanks.
