Mize Wins Second AL MVP Award in Three Years
Oct. 27, 1948
Pontiac, Ill.--For the second time in three seasons, Blackstone slugger Johnny Mize took home the American League Most Valuable Player Award. Mize just missed winning his second Triple Crown in the process. The 35-year-old All-Star first baseman led the AL with a .346 average and 48 home runs. Only teammate Ted Williams had more RBIs, 145-137. "I've been blessed the last three seasons to play on some incredible teams," said Mize. "This award belongs as much to my teammates as it does to me." Blackstone teammates Ted Williams and Stan Musial were second and fourth respectively in the balloting. Forrest catcher Yogi Berra was third. Last season, Williams finished first in the balloting. Musial was second and Mize was third.

Ennis Wins Second Straight NL Most Valuable Player Award
Oct. 27, 1948
Pontiac, Ill.--Del Ennis won his second straight National League Most Valuable Player Award. The honor made it a complete sweep of awards by the Cornell Cardinals. Teammate Dizzy Trout won the Golden Arm Award one day earlier. "Like Dizzy, I'd gladly trade this for a World Series title," said Ennis. "That being said, it's quite an honor." Ennis led the NL with a .331 batting average. He was second in RBIs (117) and third in home runs (30). Last season, Ennis became the youngest recipient of an LCL MVP in history at age 22. This year's award makes him the first repeat NL winner since Cy Williams of Pontiac in 1923 and '24. Cornell teammate Hank Greenberg finished runner-up. Ron Northey of Odell and Lou Boudreau of Chatsworth were next in the balloting.

Greenberg Grabs NL Rookie of the Year
Pontiac, Ill.--A switch to the National League worked wonders for Hank Greenberg's career.
The slugging first baseman of the Cornell Cardinals is the latest winner of the National Rookie of the Year. During his first year in the league, Greenberg hit .266 with 132 hits, 36 home runs, 92 RBIs and 111 runs scored. He also walked 119 times to compile his .410 OBP. Greenberg came over in an off-season trade from the Blackstone Bears of the American League. Flanagan's Garcia Hailed as Top AL Rookie Mike Garcia was a rookie, but he pitched like he had been here before. That's why he was voted the #1 new player in the American this season by the SION sportswriters. The 24-year-old starter hurled his way to an outstanding season and will be honored this weekend by the SION Baseball Writers Association at its annual awards meeting. Garcia had a sensational year, making 38 starts and coming away with a 25-10 record, 2.18 ERA and 149 strikeouts in 321.2 innings. A year good enough to win the league's 1948 Rookie of the Year.

Will the Livingston County League Survive?
The following is from a recent column in the Pontiac Daily Leader:
The question above has been asked on many levels. It's been asked on street corners, in local churches and watering holes alike. It's been asked by young and old, men and women, rich and poor. Will the Livingston County League survive? The league was resurrected four years ago following the most devastating war in history. Times have been good. Prosperity appears to be here. Yet, the problems that doomed the original league back in the 1920s seem to have reared their ugly heads yet again. The LCL suspended play following the 1924 season. Although there were many problems that plagued the league, dominant teams sucked the life out of the LCL. In fact, those dominant teams drove other league members into the ground not just on the playing field, but in the pocket book as well. For a time there was talk of getting the league back and rolling. Then came the Stock Market Crash of '29 and well, you know the rest of the story. So, that brings us to present day, 1949. The new and supposedly improved LCL brought back baseball to this great county in 1946. Excitement ran high in the towns. However, the Blackstone Bears and Cornell Cardinals have dominated the league. Both teams have won all the pennants with Blackstone winning all three of the LCL World Series matchups. Thus, teams representing the other towns are left with inferior products with seemingly little hope of contending. Back in the late teens, the league gave free agency a try. Each player was released from his original team and thus could be signed by any team in the league. While it sounded great in theory, it helped to doom the league in practice. The wealthy towns and owners bought up the stars and left the rest overpaying for the scraps and scrubs. So, the question again rises . . . what will become of the LCL? Will the Blackstones and Cornells of the county drive the league into bankruptcy? Will the league governors do anything to save the league? Can they do anything to save the league? Time will tell . . . but time may be running out?

1949 LCL Season Set to Begin
The 1949 Livingston County League baseball season is set to begin with a pair of games Monday afternoon.
Bridesmaids for the past two years, the St. Paul Saints have their sights set on the American League flag. However, that means the Saints must overcome defending three-time LCL champion Blackstone. To make matters worse, St. Paul begins the season with two of its stars on the disabled list: second baseman Jackie Robinson and catcher Roy Campanella. The Saints will send ace Robin Roberts to the mound for the opener at West Side Field against Graymont. The Giants will start Bob Porterfield. Meanwhile, the National League opener will pit Chatsworth against Long Point. The Cornell Cardinals have won three straight NL pennants. With cooler weather this year for spring training, a higher number of players are starting the year on the disabled list. Flanagan Fans Upset with Off-Season Trade Flanagan Falcon fans have expressed their displeasure with the trade of Golden Arm Award winner Mike "The Bear" Garcia. Fans protested outside the club's home ballpark and team offices on the weekend prior to Opening Day. "This trade just doesn't make a lick of sense," said longtime fan Fred Danford. The Falcons dealt away the ace right-hander to the three-time defending NL champion Cornell for catcher Andy Seminick. Garcia posted a 25-10 en route to both the Golden Arm and Rookie of the Year awards. "It's a case of the rich getting richer," said Danford, 78. Emington Unbeaten Through April
The Emington Patriots set a Livingston County League record by winning their first 11 games.
The Patriots hold a three-game lead over three-time defending LCL champion Blackstone in the American League. "We're clicking on all cylinders," said Patriot manager Steve O'Neill. "The pitching has backed up the hitting and the fielding has kept it all together." Leading the way has been left fielder Gene Hermanski (.439-4-13) and third baseman Danny Litwhiler (.310-6-20). Starting pitchers Harry Brecheen, Johnny Sain and Early Wynn all boast 3-0 records. Emington will face its first test with Blackstone with a two-game home series in early May. "We relish the challenge," said Wynn. LCL Notebook: Blackstone pitcher Si Johnson announced his retirement earlier this week. The 42-year-old hurler is ready to start his post-baseball career as a prison guard in his hometown of Sheridan, Illinois . . . Odell manager Joe McCarthy said this could be the year his Rams unseat Cornell as National League champions. Odell, 11-3, is 1.5 games up on Cornell in the standings . . . Blackstone Bear Ted Williams moved past the 100-home run plateu for his career. Teammate Johnny Mize leads all active LCL hitters with 159 homers. Fellow Bear Stan Musial has 90 career longballs . . . Pitchers Robin Roberts and Ned Garver are a combined 0-6 for St. Paul . . . Last year's AL Golden Arm Award winner and Rookie of the Year Mike Garcia is 2-1 in his first three starts for Cornell. The Cardinals picked up the right-hander from Flanagan in the off-season for catcher Andy Seminick, a move that was not popular with Falcon fans. Forrest, Cornell Surge to Top of Standings
June 1, 1949
The Forrest Trappers and the Cornell Cardinals have each grabbed the top spot in their respective leagues in the Livingston County League standings. Riding the crest of a 19-win May, Forrest surged past Blackstone and Emington to take the American League lead. Trapper third baseman Al Rosen has led the way. Rosen hit 11 home runs in May and taken over the AL lead with 17 round-trippers. The first-year player captured both the AL Rookie of the Month and Player of the Month Awards. Meanwhile, defending three-time NL champion Cornell has shown tremendous balance between its offense and defense. Right-hander Dizzy Trout won the NL Pitcher of the Month Award. Trout is 9-1 on the season. Newcomer Mike Garcia adds a 7-2 record. Right fielder Viz Wertz (.333-6-29) has added punch to the Cardinal lineup. He was named NL Player of the Month. LCL Notebook: Blackstone pitcher Dutch Leonard won the AL Pitcher of the Month for May . . . Fairbury's Gus Zernial was selected as the NL's Top Rookie . . . After winning an LCL-record 11 straight games to open the season, Emington has posted a 10-17 record. The Patriots have dropped into third place in the AL standings . . . Long Point traded second baseman Connie Ryan to Pontiac for pitcher Bill Voiselle . . . St. Paul infielder Jackie Robinson leads the AL in average (.361), runs scored (33) and triples (10) . . . Cullom second baseman Jerry Priddy leads the NL with a .386 average. Priddy has never batted higher than .260 in any one season . . . Blackstone outfielder Ralph Kiner has only 15 hits on the year. Seven of them have gone over the fence for home runs. Blackstone, Cornell Assume Familiar Spots Atop LCL Standings
July 1, 1949
Unless you're a fan of the Blackstone Bears or Cornell Cardinals, a glance at the Livingston County League standings won't make you happy. As we've seen the past three years, those two clubs reside atop the LCL American and National Leagues. "It's taking the life right out of the game," said longtime Dwight fan James P. Hughton. "I haven't seen a pennant since I was a kid, and that's all the way back to 1915." Ironically, it was back in '15 that the Trojans defeated Blackstone in the LCL World Series. Dwight has won just two pennants in its 25-year history. "We were excited to have this league return three years ago," said Emington fan Lyle Landers. "But, that ain't the case when it's the same two teams dominating year after year." Hughton went a step further. "I'm a Dwight Trojans fan first and foremost," he said. "But I'm also rooting for anyone against Blackstone and Cornell." LCL Notebook: No. 1 overall draft pick Whitey Ford of Graymont is sidelined with a strained left arm. Ford is 3-0 on the season . . . St. Paul center fielder Richie Ashburn set a league record with a 6-for-6 performance against Saunemin. Ashburn homered and drove in four in the game . . . Emington's Harry Brecheen and Dwight's Don Newcombe were selected as the LCL Pitchers of the Month for June . . .
