Time Warp HOF Ballot 1981

This is the annual Time Warp Baseball League Hall of Fame thread.

New to the ballot is the great centerfielder in league history.

Have at it.

1936 Initial Ballot Results, 1937 Results, 1938 Results, 1939 Results, 1940 Results, 1941 Results, 1942 Results, 1943 Results, 1944 Results, 1945 Results, 1946 Results, 1947 Results, 1948 Results, 1949 Results, 1950 Results, 1951 Results, 1952 Results, 1953 Results, 1954 Results, 1955 Results, 1956 Results, 1957 Results, 1958 Results, 1959 Results, 1960 Results (lost in board crash), 1961 Results, 1962 Results, 1963 Results, 1964 Results, 1965 Results, 1966 Results, 1967 Results, 1968 Results, 1969 Results, 1970 Results, 1971 Results, 1972 Results, 1973 Results, 1974 Results, 1975 Results, 1976 Results, 1977 Results, 1978 Results, 1979 Results, 1980 Results

All players who received at least 5% of votes on the last ballot were retained for this ballot. I also added players who became eligible for the ballot in 1981 (retired after 1975 season).

All players not receiving 5% of votes on this ballot will be removed. Also, all players who have been retired for 20 years fall off this ballot if not elected.

Vote for as many or as few as you want. Max votes are 10.

PLEASE NOTE:
Players who lost service time to the war are denoted with: WWII

Notes:

OPS+ and ERA+ are listed for all players now. 100 is considered league average. The higher the # the better the player. This lets you see how they did in relation to the players of their generation while also letting you compare their dominance of the league to players from different eras.

All Pros are for the Post War era only (1946-). There are traditionally voted on by a poll of the league's GM's and regular participants (1946-48, 1950-62, 1969-) or by the Sporting News (1949, 1963-68, All Decade & Centenial Teams). The year end teams are named for each league and feature one player for each field position along with 4-5 starting pitchers (depending on the rotation size of the era) and one relief pitcher.

The stats in "New Cato" are a work in progess with certain years missing.

FYI - You've got Rembro incorrectly credited with a World Series victory in 1967 instead of 1965.

Oh, and I guess Jed Williams too.

I'd like to say a few words to those who may not be familiar with John Patterson. This guy is quite possibly the greatest relief pitcher in Time Warp history. Maybe that doesn't mean a lot to you, since it's really only been in the modern era that relievers gained much notoriety, but Patterson is one of the greats. Here's a guy that threw over 80 innings in 9 of 11 years through the prime of his career, over 100 twice. A 4.5:1 K:BB ratio for his career. 121 wins as a reliever, including a 14-4 mark in 1961 with 34 saves. His career save totals were harmed by his trade to Pittsburgh late in his career, where he helped mentor a player that would eventually pass him in career saves, Lynn Willmon. He was also one of the great postseason pitchers of all time, not allowing even a single run in his first three trips to the postseason, which covered 11 innings. In the 1963 World Series, he threw 6.2 innings over 4 games, allowed 6 hits, walked none and struck out 3, winning 2 games and picking up a save. He had just one bad postseason, in 1968, though it was arguably one of his better seasons: 4-4, 9 saves, a 1.50 ERA in 54 innings, in which he struck out 31 and walked just 6 batters. Consider his 1965 campaign for the Detroit Tigers: 8-3, 26 saves, 75 games, 94 innings, 81 strikeouts. How many did he walk in those 94 innings? Four. Four batters walked. He had 5 seasons in which he pitched at least 50 innings and walked fewer than 10 batters.

Please consider giving him your vote.

Putnam is a candidate on his eight year year run from 1960-67. Wins Shares for Putnam from high to low in his career, with Patterson in the same fashion:

Code:
Patterson Putnam
25.4 1961 29.2 1964
24.0 1963 27.1 1966
23.8 1964 27.0 1963
22.8 1965 26.2 1965
20.8 1959 24.4 1961
19.2 1960 23.3 1962
19.0 1957 23.0 1967
13.4 1966 22.7 1960
12.1 1962 12.9 1968
10.8 1958 1.5 1970
10.1 1969 1.8 1959
 9.4 1970 1.0 1969
 8.8 1967 1.0 1971
 8.2 1968
 7.1 1956
 4.4 1955
 3.0 1971
 1.1 1972
That's how good Patterson was as a relief pitcher - his best seven seasons can stand up next to the best seven seasons of a starter from the same era whose whole case is based on peak seasons... and not get embrassed by it.

Putnam's 8th best season in that run does slap around Patterson's 8th best season.

The 9th is close, slight favor to Patterson.

After that, it's not even close. Take those 1969-70 seasons where Patterson was a very valuable part of a Lefty-Righty bullpen combo that closed out games for the NL Champs. In contrast, Brock was a bad starter who couldn't keep his job, then became a bad reliever:

Patterson: 13-6, 2.46 ERA, 25 SV, 102 G, 113.1 IP, 19.5 WS
Putnam: 12-9, 5.42 ERA, 2 SV, 54 G, 17 GS, 159.1 IP, 2.5 WS

And that doesn't touch on good relief seasons like 1957, 1967 and 1968.

One more batch of stats.

The 1961-65 Tigers were the second Tigers Dynasty under the exceptional duo of the calm General Manager David Lee and beloved Manager Kid Fite.

The Mighty Tigers, winners of the 1952-55 World Series, is among the most storied in league history. As the "mighty" implies, this club was famous for an offense led by the legendary Ray Kress, though it really was rotation coming together that turned a "disappointing" team into world beaters that put fear in the heart of contenders and World Series opponents.

The run of the 1962-64 Fite's Kids teams is less famous. They ran off three pennants on the trot with an upset World Title in the middle. Their offense wasn't as powerful, and they were famous in the era for the "Freaks" trio in their rotation: wicked control man Bill Lovely and the stingy duo of Joe Emig & Dick Sharkey who gave up the long ball at alarmingly low rates despite pitching half their games in the homer happy Tiger Stadium. The fourth member of the rotation was actually the most talented of the quartet and exempted from the tag of "Freak": power pitcher Perry Wanklen.

Despite that strong rotation, if you asked people at the time who was the "MVP" of the pitching staff, and frankly the entire team, in that era, they would have told you the lights out force that was John Patterson.

The Wins Shares to give a glimpse of why people thought that:

Code:
1961 Tigers (94-68 4th)
25.4 Patterson
24.1 Wanklen
19.1 Sharkey
14.6 Lovely
 7.8 Browne

1962 Tigers (103-60 AL Champs)
28.3 Emig
28.2 Wanklen
24.9 Sharkey
18.2 Lovely
12.1 Patterson

1963 Tigers (100-62 World Champs)
24.0 Patterson
23.8 Wanklen
21.3 Emig
16.9 Sharkey
16.4 Lovely

1964 Tigers (106-56 AL Champs)
25.0 Sharkey
23.8 Patterson
23.8 Emig
23.1 Wanklen
14.4 Lovely

1965 Tigers (101-61 2nd)
27.6 Wanklen
22.8 Patterson
17.7 De La Garza
14.4 Lovely
11.5 Sharkey
13.4 Bazer
 5.8 Childress
Wanklen obviously went on to big things with the Cards, Twins, Astros and O's. 1965 was the first of his three straight Murph Awards. He clearly was the best pitcher of this bunch.

Emig also went on to build a HOF case with the O's and Halos, making the post season as regularly as Wank seemed to... if not even more.

Yet if you look at that second Tigers Dynasty, Patterson doesn't take a back seat to anyone. He had one "off" year in five, which really wasn't that off - an injury limited him to less than a full year.

As Jeff points out, he was a beast in the post season. His performance in the 1963 Series was as good as any reliever in Series history as he was lights out against the best offense of the era, one with a reputation for abusing relievers once they chased starters from the game.

I advocate Granger for the HOF because he truly was the innovator in TWB for relievers to have long, strong and successful careers. I wish he'd gone in first before Patterson hit the ballot. But obviously Patterson was the best. He was the one pitcher in TWB history who consistently ranked with the best *starters* in the league in his prime.
