Free RAM

Not what I wanted to hear, no. Here's why...I have a utility installed - Free RAM XP Pro - which, among other things, monitors and displays the amount of free RAM on a live updating icon in the system tray. When my system crashes during a historical league creation (with full history) Free RAM XP Pro shows that my system has 1165 MB of RAM free.

I wanted to replay the history of the Montreal Expos and was not able to start a game in 1969 with full history so created a game beginning in 1910 and went on vacation until January 1, 1969. However, in 1911 the game crashed during auto-play.

I'm pretty sure there are other factors involved here than insufficient system resources.

Does Free RAM XP Pro ever show that your system has less than 1024 MB of RAM free? You're 100% sure that half of your memory isn't malfunctioning?

You said that you were using a fresh install of the game when these problems first started happening?

Maybe you're just using some corrupted historical data? Can you try creating a fictional league and simming it for 70 years as a comparison?

My RAM is from OCZ which is some of the better RAM available. My computer has not crashed under any other conditions except from setting up a historical league in OOTP8. I have (and did have) the two 1 Gig sticks of RAM in separate banks so they should have been accesses somewhat simultaneously. However, I removed and individually tested each stick of RAM and experienced no system problems. I politely beg to differ on the RAM concern.

Yes. From the first time I tried to set up a historical league in OOTP8 (back on December 27, 2007) the process has caused my computer to shut down while importing players. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game without any change in results.

I'm curious to know if the guys who posted about this problem in this thread before my have fixed this problem on their systems and if so I would be grateful to know what they did.

I tried creating a fictional league and set it to auto-sim for 70 years. The game froze in August of the first year being simmed. Here is part of the error report:

Error signature: ootp.exe
Appver: 2.0.0.0
ModName: ootp.exe
ModVer: 2.0.0.0
Offset: 0038a190

If any other parts of the error report would be helpful let me know and I will try to get that to you as well.

Thanks for you help.

Yeah, that is definitely a problem. Hrm. In your historical and fictional leagues, were you using FaceGen? If so, could you try disabling it and running the tests again?

If that isn't it, then I'd like you to create the most barebones league that you possibly can and sim it for a time. I'm talking two teams, no minor league affiliates, no coaches, no scouts, no waivers, no anything. Lowest stat details possible, no saved box scores, nothing. See how far that one gets you.

Not using FaceGen. I simmed a barebones league successfully for 70 years on auto-play.

Hrmph. Alright. What was noteworthy about the other leagues you were creating that ended up crashing? Any settings common between them all?

Common Settings

Common about those leagues that were crashing are that they were all on my computer. I know it seems to go against my arguement that the fault is not with my computer.

I've enlisted a friend who has a much better system than I do. He was able to successfully set up a historical league using 1977 data with full history. I currently have him running a Major League game starting in 2007 and letting it auto-sim for 70 years. He will email me the results and I will post them here.

Once that auto-sim is complete we will set up a historical league on his computer using 1977 data with full history and let that auto-sim for 70 years. If all of those auto-sim tests on his computer complete successfully I am going to reformat my hard drive and do a clean install.

I'll keep you posted.

Here's the email my friend sent me:

"...Guess what!! The autosim crashed at some point during the night. Unfortunately I had it minimized so couldn’t see how far it went. I’ll try it again this morning when I leave for work, and keep it full screen to see where it crashes. By the way, I’m not up yet. I’m typing this in my sleep. And the little baby did not wake me early to deprive me of sleep(at least according to my wife)..."

Also noteworthy is that I have not had any problems with prior versions of OOTP - just OOTP8.

I'll keep you posted with our tests. Anything in particular you would like tested?

Nothing in particular, other than trying to figure out why the game is crashing on you. If that were gone, then he could create a league with history for you to play out.

We are definitely trying to figure out why the game is crashing - not only for myself but for my tester friend as well. Yes, he was able to set up a historical league but simming still caused the game to crash for both of us.

Do you have the information to be able to tell us we are the exception and that the game has been stable for others who have played the game and is not crashing or freezing for them?

Well, if everyone was seeing regular crashes and freezes, I imagine that I'd be a whole lot busier here in Tech Support. Honestly, I've rarely seen an issue myself and haven't really heard of too many crashes that happen while simply simming.

However, that doesn't mean that you don't have a problem. Is there anything related about when your leagues are crashing? A certain time of year in-game? Anything?
