Baseball Card Program

Here is something I have been playing around with.

Imagine a program, where you clicked on a player and it brought up his picture, stats (weight, arm, born, age, etc) and then listed his accomplishments (batting titles, mvps, other awards, etc) then listed his career stats, season by season with a total row at the bottom and maybe an 'average' row also.

Like the screenshot below.

Now, what if this could print to a printer. What would be the size? I don't think I can make baseball size cards that looked worth a crap. They would have to be larger. Why not a whole piece of paper? That way I could possibly cram in post season, all-star stats.

I think full page would be the way to go, I can see printing them out and then putting them in a notebook.

Any thoughts?

Been playing with this a little bit here and there and here is the latest screen shot.

Note the colors. This is an option that will be toggled off or on. The colors show better seasons, green better, red worse. So, if he hits .330 or higher, it would be colored green, but he hits below .220 it would be read, with 4 or 5 different colors for the in between.

My trouble here is that I do not have a printer hooked up. I run a paperless office. So, I will be printing to PDF files, which should be fine for my testing.

Right now, I am still gathering information and working on the interface. I think the printing will be easy with the 2008 version of VB I am using. They have made it easier to be able to print forms.

Another way would be for me to take a 'screenshot' and save it as a JPG, which I can now do. So, your card would actually be a JPG file that you could easily post on a website or print out.

Actually, they can currently be dragged any way you want them.

Maybe I will just put them in the same order as Baseball-reference does it;

year, age, team, league, games, at bats, runs, hits 2b 3b hr rbi sb cs ba obp slg etc.

I am going to try and add post season, but that would make many profiles go to 2 pages.

Trouble is, b-r is set up for web viewing, not to create baseball cards to print out.

I bet one day they will have that option though!

I wish I could emulate what they have done, with the PI section, and I could do that with OOTP.

Cards

If this mod comes to pass, I for one would be ecstatic. PureSim had the ability to print out single-sheet player histories, which I generated for my favorite players when they retired. I have a binder full of them.

It will be on hold for a couple of months, while I help beta test the new version of the game. Plus, you never know what kind of features are going to make the program, so maybe this one will not be needed.

Anyhow, it is almost done now, it does print, it just does not print a pretty page yet. The tweaking needs to be done.

I think this will be more of a END OF CAREER baseball sheet for the guy.

Trouble is getting it all to fit on one sheet. I went to landscape and it does get all the stats going across the screen, but if the guy had a 20 year career, that is where it becomes difficult.

Topps (and maybe others) puts league leading stats for all categories and years in italics and red type. That would be a nice touch. I like it more than the green for good years and red for bad ones. Just highlight the positive!

Just like real cards

The idea of baseball card programs is a really good one and the one page reports look really good. I think that many of those that play with fictional leagues would love to have baseball cards that look just like topps bowman etc. It would add a great additional element of realism to fictional leagues. I have a friend who colects vintage cards and knows about my fictional league and said that he would like a set of my leagues cards if I could get them made. I would like to have a set. Looking at some of the leagues in the dynasty section, like the keystone league, I'd bet that some of the folks that follow these leagues might want to have some cards from them. They would certainly be rare sets. Some of the old time sets were very beautiful and I'm sure that there are some folks on this board who could produce some beautiful cards.

Really nice. This is basically the way PSBB presents it players via the player card.

I hope this works out for OOTP 2009.

I've been looking forward to this, but after reading of your misadventures with MLB.COM, I can understand how this might've fell off the radar. No way to get much of anything done when you're on HOLD for hours and hours. Man, I know that's frustrating. If you ever do get back to completing this, I hope you'll let us know because I'd love to have this. I envision printing out my guys when they retire. Thanks for all of your hard work, and good luck with MLB.COM.

BTW, I've got DirectTV's MLB's Extra Innings with Superfan, and I love it! May be something to consider if you can't get your MLB fix from the net.

I agree. I like the idea of regular-size player cards that you can print out on heavy card stock and keep. Since OOTP doesn't keep historical Facegen data, I would be nice to have a player's rookie card for posterity! Maybe the development team will get to this for OOTP 10.
