The Habs took care of business tonight. Now it's up to the Pens tomorrow to see who the conference champions are.
Wow, what a crowd at the Bell Centre tonight. They were fully in playoff mode.

There's been some talk amongst Pens fans that they would be better off losing to the Flyers and taking their chances with the Sens.
Personally, I think a Pens-Flyers series would be nasty, and I doubt the Pens chances afterward if they can survive such a series. I really just hope that Dan Ellis doesn't get hot and shut down the Wings as is wont to happen against them. |

Nice send off last night for Linden in Vancouver including Calgary shaking hands with him after the game. Even better, Iggy gets 50!

Well, the Canadien wins the East. That's neat.

I'm kinda sick of hearing a lot of people say "Nobody saw them there, let alone in the playoffs!"
The first reason is that... well.. I don't see what we learn from it. That they did better than expectations? Oh, ok, so what? Why are predictions so important? It's the result that counts, whether you were predicted to finish 2nd or 13th. The second reason is that several people put them in the playoffs. I did - although, nowhere near 1st place (I was thinking 6th-8th). As for Kovalev, I have no problems saying he's overrated. He's elegant, beautiful on the ice, and he's a pretty fine hockey player - but some players are calling for him to be the MVP - come on, now. His 84 points are his second-highest total ever, and he's been in the NHL since 1992. Is he a great player? Yeah. He's the best forward the Habs have. However, putting him at the top of the MVP list is clearly overrating him.

All of the major publications picked them as being out of the playoffs, but only SI did so by calling them irrelevant and saying they had "too many holes to even think about the playoffs." That's why I posted their clippings.

I can agree with those. Certainly the first. I don't think there's any question about MVP. The only other vote I could even comprehend would be for Malkin. Malkin shouldn't win it, but I could accept him getting some votes.

Ovechkin would probably be my MVP pick too, although Nicklas Lidstrom isn't far behind. The dude had 68 points in 75 games, with 40 penalty minutes. Nicklas Lidstrom is probably the best defenseman since Bobby Orr, and he's had one of his best seasons ever. MVP ahead of Ovechkin? Maybe not - but I could certainly see it.

Put a replacement level defenseman in Lidström's place, and the Wings still win their division. Put a replacement-level LW in Ovechkin's place, and the Capitals have a shot at another #1 overall pick.

That doesn't really mean much with that division. It could be argued that it's the second weakest in the league next to the SouthEast. Hell you could probably throw Aki Berg in for Lindstrom and that'd still win the division......although not nearly as much of a margin.

Leave it to Ken Hitchcock to set the tone on the most critical off-season in Blue Jackets history (20-25 million to spend, fan base getting fed up):
"Other than two or three players ... I told the players that you might have a contract, you might be a member of the organization, but you don't have a spot. This is the way it's going to be. It's going to be a mandate from ownership, from the president, from the general manager that we've entered a new phase, and the phase is 'Win now.' You might have 20 NHL contracts and there might be minor-league players or free agents or walk-ons who do a better job. And when the mandate is that it is now, that's a whole different mind-set. The developing is to be done by the developers and the winning is going to be done by this group." |
