Playoff option: will this ever be possible ?

I believe the pro bowlers use this type of playoff structure. Don't think I've seen it anywhere else, but I think it's interesting:

Example, only 1 division with 10 teams in the division:

Round 1: 5th vs 4th place teams

Round 2: Round 1 winner vs 3th place team

Round 3: Round 2 winner vs 2nd place team

Finals: Round 3 winner vs 1st place team

I know this isn't a common playoff structure, but is there a chance something like this could be a playoff option in a future version of OOTP ?

My ideal baseball universe would have 10 Leagues (Levels) consisting of 10 teams in each League with promotion/relegation - 1 team promoted/relegated. 10th place team automatically relegated (10th place team in Level 10 gets replaced with a brand new team).

The playoff structure for promotion described above. Currently I just have 1st place team vs 2nd place team in the finals.

My preference would be to have the playoff structure described above - the top 5 teams would be in the playoffs with an advantage if you finish higher in the standings - 1st place team would automatically be in the finals - 2nd place team would automatically be in the semifinals, etc. The lower you finish the more rounds you have win to advance. Just having the top 2 teams play is alittle boring sometimes, with no real advantage to finishing 1st instead of 2nd (except 1 possible extra home game).

good idea.
I'm also for an expanded playoff format like the NHL or NBA with a larger volume of teams making the playoffs, and reseeding after each round.

I understand that OOTP isnt reality, but any team taking a break like the 2nd and 1st teams in the above scenario would be at a big disadvantage because of the long layoffs. Would you want this modeled as well?

No, I probably wouldn't want the long layoffs modeled in. Wouldn't want the top teams to have any sort of disadvantage, otherwise I'd might only have Round 1 and 2 be only 1 game, Round 3 be only 1 game (or 2/3) and the finals 4 out of 7.

The great thing about this game is the amount of customizations, and the fact that you can make it follow reality only if you want it to.

The Korean Baseball Organization is a league that does use this system, for the top four teams. They play best of five, best of five, best of seven.

I'm alittle surprised it isn't used in more sports. It would be great in the English Premier League having the top 4 or 5 clubs in a Premier League Playoff, with the clubs finishing higher up given an advantage in the playoffs, having to play fewer rounds to reach the championship.

...or at least having a team or two have a bye off the first round like the nfl.

A better top 5 system is used in many Australian sports-
Week1
Game 1 - 4 v 5
Game 2 - 2 v 3

Week 2-
Game 3 - 1 v Winner G2
Game 4 - Winner G1 v Loser G2

Week 3-
Game 5 - Winner Game 4 v Loser G3

Week 4-
Final- Winner Game 3 v Winner Game 5

odd. theoretically, the winner & loser of game 2 can match up again in game 5. does that happen often?

I think I might even prefer this playoff scenerio. 2 wildcard teams with the top 3 teams reaching the playoffs. Team 2 vs Team 3 with the winner playing Team 1. Team 1 would get a few extra days off to rest players and set up their rotation.

Every now and then. They can also meet again in Game 6. Also Game 3 can also be a rematch in the final.Strangely enough, the team that loses the first meeting quite often goes on to win the replay.

I made a very detailed customizable playoffs proposal which included things like what you mentioned above. The proposal was very flexible and yet easy to use. I bet you guys would love it.

I didn't include the kind of 'staggered' playoff system being discussed in this thread, as I couldn't work it into the method I was using to set up the playoff setup screen. But it could be added as either a special option or with the addition of a specialized setup screen.

I've not heard back from Markus & crew about the proposal, so I can only presume it was too much to incorporate for this year's OOTP. There's always next year...

It used to be best-of-3, best-of-5, best-of-7. Did they expand the first round to a longer series?

Well it mentions the 2005 All Star Game on the page I found that info, so it may not actually be true.

Yep, it looks like it is still best-of-three in the first round. Sorry about that.

I do hope that they added some basic flexibility to the playoff system. I would love to see scenarios like the Aussie version described above or double elimination tournaments or relegation leagues but I would be happy if we could at least set up playoffs with byes.

My ideal would be a 30 team league with five divisions. The five division winners plus one wild card make the playoffs. the first round would be 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 in a best of three round. Then the top seed would play the lowest remaining seed with the #2 playing the other first round winner in best of seven followed by the best of seven championship.

My fingers are crossed!

I think the EPL should split into two divisions of 10 (north and south), and use a playoff, i.e 1st in north vs 2nd in south and vice versa, then the winners play for the title.

I would like OOTP's playoffs to be as customisable as is possible.

That would be nice too.

To me, there's just something missing from the English Premier League without a post season or championship within the League right after the season. The top clubs do move on to play other top clubs from around the world (mainly Europe), but not until, and during, the following season. I feel they should have a Premier League Championship to cap things off and to conclude the season after playing 38 games and 9 months or so.

It's a bit of an American/Australian tradition to have a finals series/playoff. Europeans will swear by the league format, as the best team over the season is rewarded. Too many things can go wrong in the playoffs. Don't look for the EPL or any other major soccer league to be changing anytime soon.

I thought the Aussies had moved away from 5 team playoffs. The AFL and NRL are both 8 teams, though they operate differently

NRL (Rugby League)

Week 1: 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5

The two highest ranked winners skip to week 3, and the two lowest ranked losers go home

Week 2: Third highest ranked winner v Highest ranked loser (SF1), Fourth highest ranked winner v Second highest ranked loser (SF2). Losing teams go home

Week 3 : Highest ranked winner from Week 1 vs winner Semi Final 1, Second highest ranked winner from Week 2 vs winner Semi Final 2

Week 4 : Winners from previous week

AFL (Aussie Football)

Week 1 : 1v4, 2v3 (winners progress to week 3), 5v8, 6v7 (losers go home)

Week 2 : L(2v3) v W(6v7) - SF1, L(1v4) v W(5v8) - SF2

Week 3 : W(1v4) v W(SF1), W(2v3) v W(SF2)

Week 4 : Winners from previous week

They're both sort of like a single and a half elimination format (not quite double elimination, but not straight knockout)

But we do have that. It's called the FA Cup and it's been pretty freaking fantastic this year.

I'm probably alone on this, but one of the things I appreciate about OOTP is the ability to turn off the playoffs completely. The season is long, 162 games over 6 months (or 38 over 9 months as in the quote above), the cream rises to the top over that period.

The point of a season is to end it with the best team being crowned as champions, no? I've never understood the fascination of allowing an inferior team to go on a hot streak, knock off a better team, and "steal" the championship.

I know it's the kind of thing that was discussed ad nauseum following the '06 series and there'd be flaws in just naming the team with the best record at the end as champions (unbalanced schedule and so on), but personally, in real life, I sort of lose interest come playoff time. I know where my team stands at the end of the season and the goal is the top.

Sorry to go somewhat OT there...Just for the record, I'm all for the game supporting as many playoff setups as possible, I just don't happen to be interested (and I'm definitely in the minority there).
