Canadian Professional Boxing Federation Championship

CBF Title Fight - Paul Sauve Arena, Montreal, QC, Canada

[Champion] Larry Gains, Canada, 15-2-0 (12) vs Jack Delaney, Canada, 20-2-0 (19)

Bright Eyes Delaney has been waiting for a chance at the Canadian Title and looks to be taking advantage of the opportunity as he is outboxing his counterpart in the early rounds. The middle rounds are close with neither man really hurting the other. Round 12 has Delaney down from a right cross. Gains seems to be getting the better of Delaney in the latter part of this fight. Round 15 and Gains is down twice. This could have a big effect on the decision as we go to the cards here in Canada.

Winner: Delaney
Result: (MDec15)
Cards: 142-140 Delaney, 141-141, 144-139 Delaney
Punch stats: 228-719, 31.7% Gains - 246-1210, 20.3% Delaney

CABOFE Title Fight - Black River, Jamaica

[Champion] O'Neil Bell, Jamaica, 16-3-0 (15) vs Uriah Grant, Jamaica, 14-2-0 (13)

Champion O'Neil Bell gives fellow countryman Grant a shot at his CABOFE title. While many think that Bell is ducking some better competition, Grant doesnt feel that sentiment and is bringing the fight to the champion. Grant is definitely more active and is more effective and has a higher work rate. Bell is coming on here at the end of the fight. Grant lands a hard cross that puts Bell down in the 15th. Bell gets up but goes down for the second time in the last round. The champion makes it up at the count of five and survives to the bell. I have a feeling that those two knockdowns will turn this decision. Bell came into the fight a little out of shape and overconfident that Grant would be an easy title defense. As a result, he ran out of gas. What a tremendous finish to this championship fight!

Winner: Grant
Result: (MDec15)
Cards: 143-141 Grant, 142-142, 143-142 Grant
Punch stats: 302-853, 35.4% Bell - 332-777, 42.7% Grant

ICBA Title Fight - Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

[Champion] Larry Foley, Australia, 16-0-1 (9) vs Mustafa "Killer" Couzee, South Africa, 25-5-0 (25)

Foley looks to defend his title for the 5th time and Couzee looks to get back on track after suffering a couple of setbacks in a once-promising career. Both fighters come out shooting in the first two rounds as both land some fierce shots to the head of the other. The first two rounds are very close, I would say 1-1. An unexpected uppercut puts the champion down for the first time in this fight here in the 3rd round. Both men are hurt in the 4th, but the challenger definitely got the best of the round, 28-16. Foley doesnt look like he has recovered from the last two rounds and is continuing to take on a vast amount of punishment without a response. The referee is looking closely and finally steps in to stop the fight at the 2:40 mark of the 5th round. Foley suffers his first loss and Mustafa "Killer" Couzee wins the ICBA title.

Winner: Couzee
Result: (TKO5)
Cards: 40-36, on all three cards in favor of Couzee
Punch stats: 104-178, 58.4% Foley - 200-523, 38.2% Couzee

USNBA Title Fight - St. Louis Arena, St. Louis, MO, USA

[Champion] Charles "Kid" McCoy, USA, 13-2-0 (8) vs Jeff Wooden, USA, 15-1-0 (11)

Kid McCoy is letting his hands fly at the beginning of the 2nd round but catches a counter hook from Jazzy Jeff Wooden that ends the fight with him seeing stars. Wooden improves to 16-1-0 (12) and becomes the new USNBA champion with an upset victory here in St.Louis.

Winner: Wooden
Result: (KO2)
Cards: 10-9 Wooden,, 10-9 Wooden, 10-9 McCoy
Punch stats: 56-56, 100% McCoy - 54-112, 48.2% Wooden

A month of new belt holders...

March 1955, has been a wild month as 6-8 titles have changed hands. Only GBA champion, Timo Hoffman, and OPBF champion, David Tua, have been able to successfully defend their titles, and Hoffman was relegated to a draw. Luckily for the current champions, no World Titles are on the line this month!

Cane is unable to stop McCaffrey's onslaught of punches and suffers second straight defeat...

Union Cane, USA, 11-2-0 (10) vs Dominic McCaffrey, USA, 11-1-0 (4)

Civic Ice Arena, Seattle, WA, USA. McCaffrey looks shaken from a hard cross to the body. Cane follows up a good first round with a better 2nd, 16-6. McCaffrey responds with some nice counterpunching but Cane's punches are finding the mark. Cane is hurt in the 5th, as McCaffrey takes the round, 26-3. Cane has some swelling around the right eye. Cane traps his opponent in the corner and goes to the body, 11-6, in the 7th. A shot by McCaffrey has opened a cut over the right eye of Cane here in the 8th. Cane goes down in the 9th, 20-11, McCaffrey. Cane is down again in the 10th. Cane is in trouble with over two minutes remaining in the round. Cane has been looked at twice this round but is allowed to continue. We enter the 12th and Cane is way behind on the scorecards. 13-13 in the 12th round. McCaffrey continues to work on the right eye and the ref finally stops the fight due to the cut and swelling over the right eye.

Winner: McCaffrey
Result: (TKO13)(Cuts)
Cards: 114-112, 114-112, 115-112, all three cards in favor of McCaffrey
Punch stats: 261-764, 34.2% Cane - 375-773, 48.5% McCaffrey

Hagler gets off the deck to score a TKO in the 14th and remains undefeated...

Marvin Hagler, USA, 7-0-0 (4) vs Leotis Martin, USA, 7-1-0 (4)

Eagles Club, Milwaukee, WI, USA. Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Leotis Martin both enter the ring in excellent shape for tonight heavyweight bout. Both men exchange heavy shots in the first. Hagler looks a little dazed but comes back and lands some shots to the body of Martin. Martin puts Hagler down in the middle of the 2nd round for the first time in his career. Hagler responds in the 3rd, 13-10 and 21-7 in the 4th round. A straight left seems to have hurt Martin at the beginning of the 6th, 17-7 for Hagler. The 8th is all Martin, 7-0. Hagler switches from southpaw to orthodox and follows his left jab inside, 11-7, Hagler in the 10th. Martin opens a cut under the left eye of Hagler to begin the 11th. 14-5, Hagler in the 12th. This has turned out to be some fight, but Hagler controls the entire 13th, 19-0. A vicious hook puts Martin down . Another cross puts Martin down for the second time in the 14th. That is it! Martin is unable to continue as the ref steps in between the two fighters. Marvelous Marvin Hagler summons the strength to put Martin on the seat of his pants twice in the 14th and last round!

Winner: Hagler
Result: (TKO14)
Cards: 125-122, 126-121, 125-121, all three cards in favor of Hagler
Punch stats: 227-659, 34.4% Martin - 348-1084, 32.1% Hagler

Chagaev is lucky to escape with a split-decision over Italy's Brunelli...

Ruslan Chagaev, Uzbekistan, 16-6-0 (13) vs Primo Brunelli, Italy, 10-5-1 (6)

Trieste, Italy. Brunelli has a large following here in Trieste, but Chagaev does a wonderful job of silencing the crowd in the first round by coming out and attacking. Brunelli responds with an inspired second that gets the crowd on its feet. 11-2, Brunelli in the 4th. 12-6, Chagaev in the 5th. Chagaev does a good job of staying on the outside at the beginning of rounds but allows Brunelli to get inside in the last 1:30 of each round. Brunelli has been warned for a low blow but seems to be outboxing Chagaev here as we enter the 9th. The 9th is good for the visitor, 17-4. Both men are doing a lot of holding but Brunelli has a good 10th, 16-4. It looks as though Brunelli has a nice lead as we enter the 13th. 14-6, another round for Brunelli in the 13th. 6-3, another round to Brunelli in the 14th. Chagaev finally connects after letting his hands go and wins the last round, 14-4. We will go to the scorecards but I dont think Chagaev did enough to win here tonight.

Winner: Chagaev
Result: (SD15)
Cards: 143-142 Brunelli, 143-142 Chagaev, 143-142 Chagaev
Punch stats: 397-849, 46.8% Brunelli - 230-1116, 20.6% Chagaev
