Player development damage
This will seem like a simple question to answer, Yet i am looking to get as many (if any) various opinions on the subject as possible :
If you start a fictional league with only 2 Levels - Major League and AAA - as you draft players each year they are obviously going to have to go to one of the 2 squads Some of the players drafted will not ever be major league caliber and may end up being career minor leaguers.. Some others (a much smaller number) will be ready for that jump This would be the case no matter how many minor league affiliates you had R, A ,AA ,AAA etc.. But if this league is just based on two as stated above what would you expect the development issues to be in the long run (since it is the same setting for the entire league) I understand more steps may be better - But is less steps really worse ? Since it evens the playing field with the limited development cycle Thanks in advance |

I have a vague recollection of reading here that development is geared to the number of minor league levels, so that with only two levels you can expect a combination of quicker development and less of a penalty for players spending too much time at one level. This works all the way down to just having a reserve roster and no minor leagues. Let's see what others have to say.

FWIW... I started a fictional league in 1871 with just two levels, MLB & AAA. Development seemed normal. In 1900 I added AA level and the AI managers moved @ 70% of the players from AAA to AA. It's 1910 now and all levels seem to be as they should to me.

I've wondered about this also. If you only have one minor league level, then you are going to have raw rookies competing against almost ready for prime time players. In this case, it seems logical to assume that the raw guys are going to be overmatched against the more seasoned minor leaguers. In turn, it seems logical to assume that this would hurt their development. I don't like to diddle with 5 levels of minors, but I'm afraid of only having one because of the above stated issue. In my current league, I created two levels of minors, AAA and AA, which I call "Senior Minor League" and "Junior Minor League" to try to blunt this effect. I also created a college feeder league, and set the feeder league PCMs to just below AA levels. It's too early to tell if it works because I'm still in the first season. If this thread is still "alive" after I've finished a few seasons, I'll report back.

One issue you will almost certainly run into is that young players getting dominated by the more developed minor leaguers are going to become very unhappy with their performance. Now I am not sure how being unhappy affects development, but I do know that having 1/2 your minor league team mad at you, is not going to be easy to deal w/ as a manager since that stuff starts affecting the performance of the players around them.
