All Time Greats Coming To A Ballpark Near You Soon!
All time Greats from 1900 to 2008 for historical gamers is now complete! Follow the link at bottom of this page to get your copy.
The "All Time Greats" database has been constructed to my personal preference of playing "era" baseball. That is, each of the 36 rosters that come with this database represents a particular team taken from an era close to that teams particular best won/lost percentage in history. Since newer teams can not compete either with enough greats to fill a roster or have never really had a great season, they have been replaced by teams who have. For example, among these replacement teams you will find the old Philidelphia Athletics ; (circa 1930's)and the Washington Senators; (circa 1930's)and the St. Louis Browns; (circa 1940's). Obviously, there are several teams who have had multiple great seasons over several eras. Some of these multiple era dynasties are included but assigned to different cities. Hence, you will find the NY Giants playing in New Jersey as the New Jersey BlackSox. The reason they play in New Jersey is because the AL Eastern Division New York Yankees (circa 1990 to 2007) and the NL Eastern Division Brooklyn Bridegrooms; circa 1948 to 1959 (alias Dodgers) play in New York. (A note about the BlackSox - ; circa 1900 to 1920 - this NL Eastern Division team is a banjo hitting bunch that would hit and steal the cover off your grand-mothers baseball and slam the door in the face of your own hitters behind the great arms of Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity. This team always does well and if your playing in the National League, they will drive you nuts with their nickel and dime style of play). Playing with this "ERA" league means that if you want a Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Ty Cobb, etc., your going to have to scout the "Free Agent" pool and deal with "contract negotiations." This means you will ususally pay through the nose in order to sign up some super greats. However, there are tons of bargains to be found and sometimes great players will play for peanuts depending upon the year chosen in the League Manager menu. By the way, the majority of really great players are not assigned to any team - they are "free agents." The doors are wide open. Yet each team in is awesome and fiercely competitive on its own. Imagine how tough it gets if you let the A/I draft players from the FA pool! This league is not for the faint of heart or for those (like me) who hate to lose! "The All Time Greats" includes every notable player from their single greatest season from 1900 to 2008. Ratings based upon player's whole career - the averages tell no lies! All data extracted from Lehman's. The "All Time Greats" database contains well over four thousand of baseball's greatest players ranging from 1900 to 2008. With few exceptions, each rostered player has been assigned a major league contract based upon Win-Shares. This provides for an evenly distributed payroll structure throughout the leagues. However, there remains thousands of players who are waiting to hear your contract offers. Each player has been selected based on his best overall single season performance. In some cases, this has made for some tough decisions. However, batting average and/or total bases and RBI's or Stolen Bases have been tie breakers. In rare cases, the player's age has made the difference. But who really cares if you only have to import a few custom players and not hundreds or thousands? With the exception of a few players, each player's year and the team he played for will be clearly identified. This will make roster creations a snap and a half! Now, anyone can create custom historical leagues, divisions, teams and rosters in a dramatically reduced length of time. In an instant, compared to what you have to otherwise endure now, you will be able to create teams with their "All-Time" greatest lineups, or best teams and lineups by the decade or any other era. Ever wonder who would be all time single season home run hitter? Would it be Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Hank Greenberg, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Micky Mantle, Ryan Howard, Roger Maris, Harmon Killebrew, Hack Wilson, Willie Mays, Jose Canseco or any one of a dozen others? Or how about the single seasons best batting average? Would it be George Sisler, Rodger Hornsby, Ty Cobb, Wade Boggs, Pete Rose, Icherio, Ted Williams, Albert Pujois, Jeff Bagwell, or any one of a dozen other greats? How about single season strikeout king? Roger Clemens, Sandy Koufax, Walter Johnson, Nolan Ryan, Russ Ford, Jack Pfiester, Bret Saberhagen, etc? Now, you will have opportunity to play the all time greats versus the all time greats and find out who is the king of kings. I have played several seasons and there are surprises every time - the outcomes are never really the same. For example, you might create the All-Time great Cincinnati Red's lineup ... (C) J. Bench (1972); (1b) T Kluszewski (1954); (2b) Joe Morgan (1975); (SS) B Larkin (1996); (3b) Heine Groh (1917); (Lf) G Foster (1977); (Cf) Cy Seymour (1905); (Rf) F Robinson (1962); (SP) Bucky Walters (1939); (RP) Danny Graves (2000) - although I'd prefer (SP) T Seaver and (RP) R Dibble myself. The possibilities are endless ... if there are a few players left out or, if you are unhappy with the particular year selected for a certain player, you can easily import him from Lehman's and do as you please with those whom you don't like. You can adjust player ratings as you like and attach player photos when and where you want them. You may download a free copy of "Spanky's All Time Greats" at All Baseball Sims website by clicking on the link below: Click here: All Sim Baseball to access and download "Spanky's All Time Greats" - (No registration is required; scroll down towards bottom of page to find the greats). Important Note: Unzip the files into a separate directory/folder, i.e., c:/Baseball/OOTP/The Greats. Remember, the league files are in OOTP 6.5 format. Unless your are playing in Ver 6.5, you will have to import the Greats into OOTP 2007/2008/2009. You will only import the League.dat file. Rename your league and choose the starting year - any year starting with 2002. Also, you may want to adjust some of the settings in League Manager. For example, you may want to adjust the minimum salaries and media revenue (Suggest $50M per team) and adjust league factors (I've used 1961 factors but you can use others). Also, set pitching endurance to "High" since most pitchers are certainly going to get clobbered and be lucky to last 5 or 6 innings anyway. Your going to want to keep stealing bases at "normal" because these guys are going to run, run, run. Having a great defensive catcher comes in handy. Hope you enjoy! All Time Greats 1900-2008

The main purpose of this project has simply been to create a single database source comprised of the majority of notable players from 19000-2008. This will make the creation of "Roster Sets" more of a snap than ever before. Spanky |

I'd definitely like a copy.
I am interested in how you imported the players. Did you alter Lahman or create a separate database to modify stat totals, did you edit player ratings in-game, or did you import players in their best years without numbers modification?

The All Time Greats Is Finally Done ...
I pleased to announce that Spanky's All Time Greats is finally updated and done. The only thing left to do is to find somebody who can give me a link and a home to post the files. The total zipped version of the league file is just under 13MB. So, now I'm off to find a home for my contribution.
I tried to upload the file here in this forum but was unable to do so due to the 1MB limits. Let me know if you or anybody else can help me with this last step. Spanky |
